A message from the co-chairs,
Welcome to the History Book Festival, the only one of its kind in the nation. As you will see, a host of acclaimed and best-selling fiction and non-fiction authors are participating in the Festival along with noted individuals who will serve as moderators.
The Festival is a non-profit organization. It has been two years in the making and is the product of the sustained efforts of a dedicated volunteer group. In many ways, it has been a community effort, one made possible by civic, religious, and business groups committed to making the Festival a proud part of our city’s life.
Why a history book festival? There are three reasons. First, we wanted to offer up something different from anywhere else in the nation. Second, it seemed a natural fit for us since Lewes was the first town in the first state – history is one of our main assets. Third, there was a civic reason: an informed citizenry can never be too knowledgeable about its past, both its glorious and inglorious moments. The Festival will be an annual event. We hope its debut will engage and enlighten our attendees so as to make history come alive in ways that invite active participation.
Much effort has gone into making our selection of topics and authors diverse. Thus, there is likely to be something to appeal to almost all tastes, whether you are interested in war (the Civil War or the first two World Wars), racial justice, religious history, sex and the Constitution, art and music, local history, or even baseball or gardening. And yes, we have local authors, historical fiction and historical mystery books along with something for young adults.
So join us in making the Festival all that it can be. In other words, help us make history by making the History Book Festival a memorable and lasting one.

Interviewers
“In this brilliant followup to his path-breaking and well received study of FSA photography of the Great Depression, Curtis provides a meticulous examination of War Relocation photographs of the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. He decodes these images with precise insight, showing how the work of WRA photographers served the government’s needs for effective visual propaganda to justify the evacuation and prove that the internees were being humanely treated in their confinement. Curtis demonstrates that this pictorial campaign, although mounted with the best of intentions nevertheless reflected pervasive historic beliefs in the inferiority of Japanese Americans.”
Lewis L. Gould, author of The Republicans: A History of the Grand Old Party (2014).
