My friends,

I hope that you having a nice, lazy, enjoyable summer. We live in a culture that underestimates the benefit of Sab-bath time. We glorify the busy, active lifestyle and give too little credence to downtime. God does not. God who heals us of every wound, if we will allow, instructed those who had lived lives of slavery to take some down time. In their lives of “struggle-or-die” they had become accustomed to hustling to make ends meet. Yet our greatest creativity comes in times rest, of introspection, of lazy day dreaming. I suspect that our greatest healing also comes during down-times, times when we are able to grieve our losses, salve our wounds, abide in deepest gratitude. All of this requires down time.

Yet we are too often focused on achievements and climbing the next hill, tackling the next goal, doing something great. Our scripture commands us to “Be still and Know, That I Am,” a better, more accurate translation might read, “cease clinging and grasping, relax, trust, and know.” Our anxious way of living tells us there is never enough time, never enough resources, never enough, never enough, but God tells us to trust in God’s providence and suste-nance. God tells us to chill out and relax, it’s OK. We are enough. We have enough. It’s OK.

It is from this place of relaxing into the loving arms of God that we discover freedom from anxiety and stress, from clinging and grasping. We cannot do both. We are either floating on the surface of God’s love, enjoying that all en-compassing embrace, or we are floundering and trying desperately to keep our heads above water. Only when we learn to transition from one to the other, can we learn to swim, learn to navigate deep and turbulent waters.

Sabbath times give us the strength and ability to disconnect from drama and reactive, stress building triggers. We learn to witness things that are heavily laden with emotion and fear and pause thoughtfully so that we might respond with intention rather than being reactive.

As our country gears up for the next election it is my hope that you will join me in a regular practice of Sabbath, that we might avoid being triggered and driven by reactivity by all that is happening in our world and our country. Those who profit from our thoughtless, reactive behaviors have motive to stir us up and push us in directions we do not want to go. It is my hope that you will join me in practices that will allow us all to be thoughtful, kind, compassionate, and intentional in our actions. That we might pause when we see or read something that is intended to amp up our emotions and ask ourselves if it is true, if it is current or simply pulling up old wounds, if we need to respond at all, or if our most faithful response is quiet trust in God. There are times when we need to respond and speak up faithfully, to witness to our faith, and there are times when those who profit from chaos would stir us up emotionally and leave us triggered, anxious, fearful, and reactive.

Our commitment to practicing Sabbath reminds us that our lives are in the hands of God and not in our anxious striv-ings. “Cease clinging and grasping, relax, and know,” that God is in control, that the end of this story is secure, it’s in God’s hands, that you are loved so dearly that God will catch you if you should fall. I hope that you will join me in an active, intentional practice of Sabbath this year.

Grateful to serve with you as we serve God together; Pastor Cyndi
