SUNDAY MORNING January 24, 2021 ELEVEN O’CLOCK AM

    Third Sunday After Epiphany

The liturgical color today is green. Green is the color of growth while the church is on mission

during the season of Epiphany. THE GREETING Tammy Hight THE CHIMING OF THE TRINITY THE INVOCATION Mary Austell THE PRELUDE Prelude on LAUDES DOMINI Joseph Barnby, arr. Robert Lind THE CALL TO WORSHIP Mary Austell

We come as seekers, Unsure of what we seek. We come as followers, Not understanding the One we follow. We come to worship, Even though we don’t know how. Holy One, by your grace, Meet us where we are. Meet us here. Meet us now. Amen.

  • THE HYMN OF PRAISE When Morning Gilds the Skies LAUDES DOMINI

THE PSALTER LESSON: Psalm 62:1-2, 5-8 Kari Martin

1For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. 2He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall never be shaken. 5For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him. 6He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

7On God rests my deliverance and my honor; my mighty rock, my refuge is in God. 8Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.

  • THE CALL TO CONFESSION Kari Martin THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Bread of Life, we confess that though we have heard you call our name, we have been reluctant to follow you. We are stubborn to live into your ways of justice that call us to dismantle structures that empower us over others. We hesitate to turn away from systems that benefit us. We feel awkward when called to repentance, reluctant to abandon the worldly systemic sin that create wealth and power for some and requires others to go without. Forgive us, Holy One. Call us into repentance, and call us by name, so we may turn our hearts to you. Help us to live into your way, your truth, and your life. Amen.

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON THE NEW TESTAMENT LESSON: Revelation 3:14-22 David Allen

14“And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the origin of God’s creation: 15“I know your works; you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either cold or hot. 16So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17For you say, ‘I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing.’ You do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. 18Therefore I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich; and white robes to clothe you and to keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen; and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. 19I reprove and discipline those whom I love. Be earnest, therefore, and repent. 20Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me. 21To the one who conquers I will give a place with me on my throne, just as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.”

    THE GLORIA WESTMINSTER ABBEY

  • THE GOSPEL LESSON: Mark 1:14-20 14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15and

saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” 16As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. 17And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” 18And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

THE SERMON The Urgency of Discipleship Ronald Cava THE HYMN Be Thou My Vision SLANE

  • THE CALL TO PRAYER Amy Russell THE MORNING PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER THE OFFERTORY ANTHEM Jesus Calls Us Philip M. Young

Jesus calls us o’er the tumult of our life’s wild restless sea, day by day his voice is sounding, saying “Christian, follow me.”

As of old apostles heard it by the Galilean lake, turned from home, and toil, and kindred, leaving all for his dear sake.

Jesus calls us from the worship of the vain world’s golden store, from each idol that would keep us, saying “Christian, love me more.”

In our joys and in our sorrows, days of joy and hours of ease, still he calls, in cares and pleasures, “Christian, love me more than these.”

Jesus calls us! By thy mercies, Savior, may we hear thy call. Give our hearts to thine obedience, serve and love thee best of all. -Cecil Frances Alexander

Come, Christians, follow where our Savior trod, our King victorious, Christ, the Son of God. -George Kitchin
