Text of Lecture: In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful [This is] a word with our brothers who are listening. They are having a Salafi gathering in the land which they are in and they desired that we participate with them. They have the right to request 2

cooperation due to the verse of Allah:

اهللا شديد العقاب  والتقوى وال تعاونوا على اإلثم والعدوان واتقوا اهللا إن  وتعاونوا على البر

Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment. 3

And due to the fact [that this reminder ] is from doing good [as Allah says:]

And do good that you may be successful 4

And also:

And Allah will aid His slave so long as he aids his brother. 5

Calling to Allah is from victory/aid. The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said:

Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is an oppressed one. 6

2 That is Toronto, Canada. The telelink was held in Bukhari Center 3 [5:2] 4 [22:77] 5 Muslim (no. 2699) 6 Bukhari (no. 2443)

When reflecting upon this Hadith, it is known that the intent is supporting him by preventing his brother from oppression, whether by advice, guidance, or what he is capable of in terms of preventing oppression from him and preventing him from oppression. All of that is from supporting him.

The believers, men and women, are Auliya' (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another. 7

They advise one another, cooperate with one another, visit one another, and consult one another. Our speech today with our brothers who are listening here and there, is one in which we are in more need of it than others. No doubt in an admonishment, the admonisher and those admonished are both in need. The admonisher and those admonished. It was mentioned that Abdullah Ibn Wahb (may Allah have mercy upon him) wrote a book called The Horrors (أهوال ); when they read the book to him, it was the cause of his death . Perhaps while writing the book he was concerned with 8

its authorship. When it was read to him and he heard it, it was more difficult upon him. The Book of Allah is an admonishment and lesson for the believers. Our speech today, by Allah’s Tawfeeq (divine Success), is surrounding the topic: Fiqh of Reliance in the Lord of the Servants. Reliance upon Allah is Tawakul, for the People of Knowledge have defined Tawakul as truthful reliance of the heart upon Allah in bringing benefit and deflecting harm in the worldly life and hereafter. There is no doubt [that] the hearts have weakness of Imaan, and in accordance to the weakness of Iman there is weakness in Tawakul, and the Iman weakens in accordance to the weakness in Tawakul. Tawakul in Allah is a condition for the validity of Imaan due to the statement of Allah:

ؤمنين لوا إن كنتم م  وعلى اهللا فتوك

And put your trust in Allah if you are believers indeed. 9

The People of Knowledge say [that] this is a condition for the one who has Iman - to have Tawakul in Allah. For Allah describes the believers that they are people who [have] trust in Allah. This is their characteristic.

The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His Verses (this Quran) are recited unto them, they (i.e. the Verses) increase their Faith; and they put

their trust in their Lord (Alone). 10

And Allah says:

Only those are the believers who have believed in Allah and His Messenger, and afterward doubt not. 11

Their Messengers said: "What! Can there be a doubt about Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth? He calls you (to Monotheism and to be obedient to Allah) that He may forgive you of your

sins and give you respite for a term appointed." They said: "You are no more than human beings like us! You wish to turn us away from what our fathers used to worship. Then bring us a clear authority (i.e. a clear proof of what you say)." Their Messengers said to them: "We are no more than human

beings like you, but Allah bestows His Grace to whom He wills of His slaves. It is not ours to bring you an authority (proof) except by the Permission of Allah. And in Allah (Alone) let the believers

put their trust. 12

That is: it is not possible that we come with something Allah did not permit. With that, their trust in Allah was firm and it was emphasized by His saying:

على مآ آذيتمونا ل على اهللا وقد هدانا سبلنا ولنصبرن   وما لنآ أال نتوك

"And why should we not put our trust in Allah while He indeed has guided us our ways. And we

shall certainly bear with patience all the hurt you may cause us.” 13

The meaning of that is: we are putting our trust in Allah, despite whatever occurs from you [from harm]. This is the truthful reliance of the heart upon Allah, the Exalted - the one who generates in himself confidence in the Lord of the Worlds and not having care for whoever opposes this Religion and opposes the clear Truth.

O my people, if my stay (with you), and my reminding (you) of the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah is hard on you, then I put my trust in Allah. So devise your

plot, you and your partners, and let not your plot be in doubt for you 14

That is: gather all together and make your affair clear where there is no doubt for some of you.

Then pass your sentence on me and give me no respite. 15

And Allah says:

I put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord! 16

That is: my Lord is Allah, your Lord is Allah, and your forelocks are in His Hand. This is the truthful reliance of the heart upon Allah, the Exalted.

There is not a moving (living) creature but He has grasp of its forelock. Verily, my Lord is on the Straight Path (the truth). 17

From the confidence of the Prophets in Allah and their reliance upon their Lord is Ibrahim when he called his people and they refused. When they brought him to that great ditch and resolved to burn him, he said:

 حسبي اهللا ونعم الوكيل

Allah is Sufficient for us and He is the Best Disposer (of affairs for us). ‘Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: د صلى اهللا عليه وسلم  الم حين ألقي في النار، وقالها محم   { حسبنا اهللا ونعم الوكيل }  قالها إبراهيم عليه الس

الناس قد جمعوا لكم فاخشوهم فزادهم إيمانا وقالوا حسبنا اهللا ونعم الوكيل   {حين قالوا  { إن “Allah is Sufficient for us and He Is the Best Disposer of affairs" was said by Ibraahim when he was

thrown into the fire, and it was said by Muhammad when they (i.e. the hypocrites) said, "A great army is gathering against you, therefore, fear them", but it only increased their faith and they said:

"Allah is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer (of affairs for us) 18

The one who puts his trust in Allah is certain that Allah is sufficient for him. The fire did not consume Ibrahim due to the truthful reliance of his heart upon His Lord.

We (Allah) said: "O fire! Be you coolness and safety for Ibrahim (Abraham)!" And they wanted to harm him, but We made them the worst losers. 19

Nothing of their plot affected him despite how much they gathered, thought, plotted against him, and were wicked. All of that did not harm him. Allah is the One [Who] is sufficient for Ibraahim. From the truthfulness of his reliance upon Allah is that he came [to] his family, when Allah ordered him [with] that, and left them at a large tree near the Sacred House. The Scared House was a hill [at] that time and it was not built yet. He turned away and his wife said to him: “Where are you going?

And you left us in this valley?” That is: without [the] company of anyone. He did not respond to her. She said: “Did Allah order you [with] that?” He indicated yes. So she said: “Then Allah will not waste us.” When he went a little he said:

م يتى بواد غير ذى زرع عند بيتك المحر بنآ إنى أسكنت من ذر  ر

O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell in an uncultivable valley by Your Sacred House (the Ka'bah at Makkah).

By Allah, they had no vegetation, no company, nor anyone to sit with at that time.

In order, O our Lord, that they may perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat),

In order to establish the prayer in that place.

So fill some hearts among men with love towards them, and (O Allah) provide them with fruits so that they may give thanks. 20

Due to the truthful reliance of the heart of Ibrahim upon his Lord, Allah verified what he desired and supplicated for and protected his children. He left some dates with Hajr and some water to drink, and Isma’eel was a young newborn. So he began to eat those dates and drink that water until it finished and there was no water nor milk [left], so then he became hungry, and the love of the mother is great, so she ascended Safa and descended Marwa. She ran between these two landmarks. She was looking [to see] if there is anyone who can provide water. So Allah sent Jibreel and he dug with his wing - and in another wording, with the heel of his foot - and brought forth the Zamzam water. Then the birds gathered around that water and people passing by said: those are the birds at the water. So Jurhum joined them at that place and a great neighborhood came from there and Isma’eel married among them. They were Arab so he took the Arabic from them. His Arabic was not standard Arabic, so he took Arabic from them. That is what Hafidh Ibn Hajr said . Makkah 21

became what you see now. This great good was due to the difficulty which Allah relieved from His Prophet Ibrahim. Then the Sacred House was built, and Allah ordered that, and his son Isma’eel assisted him in it.

Then his heart was the truthfulness in reliance upon Allah when he was ordered to slaughter his son in a dream. The dream of the Prophets are truth. So he took his knife and went to slaughter his son. His heart was relying upon Allah without doubt and wavering, without inclining away from Allah, but rather he was Haneef (true monotheism), Muslim, and not from the polytheists.

Verily, Ibrahim (Abraham) was an Ummah (a leader having all the good righteous qualities), or a nation, obedient to Allah, Hanifa (i.e. to worship none but Allah), and he was not one of those who

were Al-Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, and those who joined partners with Allah). (He was) thankful for His (Allah's) Graces. 22

Haneef is one who is devoted to Allah and turns away from Shirk. He said:

"O my son! I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you (offer you in sacrifice to Allah), so look what you think!" 23

And his son was truthful in his intention and reliance [upon Allah]. He said:

He said: "O my father! Do that which you are commanded, Insha' Allah (if Allah wills), you shall find me of As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.)." 24

Allah said:

Then, when they had both submitted themselves (to the Will of Allah)

That is: when they complied and submitted to the command of Allah. Submission is one of the meanings of Tawakul.

22  [16:120-121] 23 [37:102] 24 [37:102]

8

Page 10: The Fiqh of ﷲ ﮫﻈﻔﺣ Reliance upon - Darussaafi · The Fiqh of Reliance upon the Lord of the Slaves1 Lecture Delivered by: ... 8 Mentioned by Hafidh Dhahabi in Siyar ‘Alam

Then, when they had both submitted themselves (to the Will of Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (or on the side of his forehead for slaughtering); And We called out to him: "O

Abraham! You have fulfilled the dream (vision)!" Verily! Thus do We reward the Muhsinun (good-doers - see V.2:112). Verily, that indeed was a manifest trial. And We ransomed him with a

great sacrifice (i.e. a ram). 25

This ransom (ram) was sent. This Quran does not cease to mention Ibrahim and his son, their submission to Allah, the Exalted, and their good reliance upon their Lord.

My brother’s for the sake of Allah, verily this reliance and confidence in Allah is the discussion of Islam, and like that the call of the Prophets and Messengers was established upon it (may peace and blessings be upon them). The Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) was travelling once. [He (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)] descended and separated from the Companions. A man named Ghawrath came and took the sword of the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) who was sleeping at the time. He said:

Who will prevent you from me? He said: Allah.

With all confidence and reliance upon his Lord. The man had the sword in his hand and the Prophet was lying down and he said “Allah”, so the sword fell out [of] the hand of the bedouin. That (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)is because Allah, the Exalted, sufficed Him and protected him. 26

[He (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) was] similar to that and greater than that in truthful reliance upon Allah, because his name is Mutawakil (one who puts his trust in Allah), as comes in the Hadith of Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him): يئة  يئة بالس اب باألسواق وال يدفع الس  وال غليظ وال سخ ل ليس بفظ يتك المتوك  أنت عبدي ورسولي سم

You are My slave and My Apostle, and I have named you Al-Mutawakkil (one who depends upon Allah). You are neither hard-hearted nor of fierce character, nor one who shouts in the markets. You

do not return evil for evil, but excuse and forgive. 27

This is due to the greatness of his trust in Allah. When his people expelled him, he and Abu Bakr descended into a cave and the polytheists were searching for him. They did not want to expel him because perhaps he will have supports, but as long as he was among their ranks he would not have any da’wah. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: if one of them looks down at his feet, he would see us. However, Allah blinded their eyes and they did not look at their feet, but rather looked here and there and left. As for the stories that a spider made a web or a dove had some eggs or something ancient that covered them, nothing from them is affirmed. It was only Allah’s defence of His servant al-Mutawakil. He said:

Abu Bakr! What do you think about two, the third of whom is Allah? 28

The enemy saw and the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) and his companion (Abu Bakr) were below them.

and he said to his companion (Abu Bakr): "Be not sad (or afraid), surely Allah is with us." Then Allah sent down His Sakinah (calmness, tranquillity, peace, etc.) upon him, and strengthened him

with forces (angels) which you saw not, and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowermost, while it was the Word of Allah that became the uppermost. 29

This is the truthful reliance of the heart upon Allah, the Exalted. When Allah, the Exalted, wanted to save Musa from the killing which Fir’awn did to the children of Bani Israeel:

يذبح أبناءهم ويستحيي نساءهم إنه كان من المفسدين

27 Reported by Bukhari (no. 4838) 28 Reported by Bukhari (no. 3653), Muslim (no. 2381) and others 29 [9:40]

killing their sons, and letting their females live. Verily, he was of the Mufsidun (i.e. those who commit great sins and crimes, oppressors, tyrants, etc.). 30

Allah inspired the heart of the mother of Musa with an inspiration due to the great confidence in Allah and trust in Him (i.e. she was inspired to nurse him).

And We inspired the mother of Musa (Moses), (saying): "Suckle him [Musa (Moses)], but when you fear for him, then cast him into the river and fear not, nor grieve. Verily! We shall bring him back to

you, and shall make him one of (Our) Messengers." 31

She fulfilled that action based on the inspiration, which was in her heart due to her confidence in her Lord. So she made a box or the likes and put him in the sea.

Then the household of Fir'aun (Pharaoh) picked him up, that he might become for them an enemy and a (cause of) grief. 32

Allah did not cease to have concern for this Prophet of Allah in his young age until he rejected nursing from others. They sought wet-nurses for him and they could not find [any]. His mother sent his sister to look for him (يه search for him, and preserve him. She found him in a place and the ,( قصstory continues until:    عينها وال تحزن ولتعلم أن ه كى تقر  هل أدلكم على أهل بيت يكفلونه لكم وهم له نـصحون  فرددنـه إلى أم

"Shall I direct you to a household who will rear him for you, and sincerely they will look after him in a good manner?" So did We restore him to his mother, that she might be delighted, and that she

might not grieve, and that she might know that the Promise of Allah is true. 33

This is the concern of Allah for the one whose heart is truthful in reliance upon Him. Likewise, the one who has trust in Allah and is truthful in relying upon Allah, Allah will suffice him.

And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out. And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him. Verily,

Allah will accomplish his purpose. 34

That is: His purpose will be accomplished. None can reject His Decree nor put back His judgement.

Indeed Allah has set a measure for all things. 35

There is not something except it has a set measure with Allah and their forelock is in the Hand of Allah.

There is not a moving (living) creature but He has grasp of its forelock. 36

From this issue is that Allah saved His Prophet

And if they intend to deceive you, then verily, Allah is All-Sufficient for you.

That is: they cannot deceive you

He it is Who has supported you with His Help and with the believers. 37

Allah is sufficient for you, He will support you and the believers. The Messenger of Allah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) went out and like it was said:

قتم : جئتنا طريدا فآويناك  واهللا لو شئتم لقلتم فصدقتم وصد

By Allah if you wished you could have said and you would have spoken the truth. You came to us as a fugitive and we gave you refuge. 38

He was supported by the believers from the Ansaar [and] he was supported by the believers from Qahtaan . One of them said: 39

 ال واهللا ، ال نكون كالمأل من بني إسرائيل إذ قالوا لموسى : { فاذهب أنت وربك فقاتال إنا هاهنا قاعدون }

By Allah, we will not be like the group from Bani Israeel when they said to Musa: “Both you and your Lord go and fight, we are sitting here (5:24).” However, we will say: “You and your Lord fight,

we will fight with you.” 40

This is one wording and the more correct wording is similar:

ولكنا نقاتل عن يمينك وعن شمالك وبين يديك وخلفك

But we shall fight on your right and on your left and in front of you and behind you. 41

There used to be battles between Aws and Khazraj from the Ansar and Qahtaan between themselves. Battles and bloodshed [used to occur before] and Allah unified their hearts by the Messenger of Allah This is all from the truthful reliance upon Allah that Allah send these lions to support him. The point is:

If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have united their hearts, but Allah has united them 43

This is from good confidence and reliance in Allah - He suffices him. And whoever has Allah as his حسبه) ), He will suffice him and protect him. It was established from the Hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), in Tirmidhi and Abu Dawood, and it is established, that the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said:  من قاليعني إذا خرج من بيته :  بسم اهللا توكلت على اهللا، وال حول وال قوة إال باهللا ، يقال له :  هديت

Whoever says (upon leaving his house): 'Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah [I begin with the Name of Allah, I put my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor strength

except with Allah]. It will be said to him: 'You are guided, defended and protected.' The devil will go far away from him. 44

It will be said to him: “You are guided”

That is: these words are guidance.

It will be said to him: “You are guided, defended and protected.”, and the devil will go far away from him.

43 [8:63] 44 It was graded Saheeh by al-Albani in Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawood (no. 5095)

You are guided, defended, protected, and the devil will go far away from him. Four benefits from having good reliance upon Allah when exiting the house and going out. From these benefits, is that he goes out in the guidance of Allah and that he is in protection from evil and calamity and that he is sufficed by his Lord. Shaytan cannot harm him, even though something may occur from Shaytan, he will go far away. Likewise, from the truthful reliance of the heart upon Allah [is] in front of the enemy. All the Arabs gathered and called one another against the Messenger of Allah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) and his Companions. With that, the Messenger of Allah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) and his Companions only increased in Iman and submission.

Those (i.e. believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, "Verily, the people (pagans) have gathered against you (a great army), therefore, fear them." But it (only) increased them in Faith, and they said: "Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us)." So they

returned with Grace and Bounty from Allah. No harm touched them. 45

No harm touched them. Likewise, on the day of Ahzaab no harm touched them either. A wind came from the Lord of the Worlds to defend these truthful people who relied upon their Lord. This great group of Arabs left despite their gathering and coming together, as Allah said:  يأيها الذين ءامنوا اذكروا نعمة اهللا عليكم إذ جآءتكم جنود فأرسلنا عليهم ريحا وجنودا لم تروها وكان اهللان فوقكم ومن أسفل منكم وإذ زاغت االبصـر وبلغت القلوب الحناجر  بما تعملون بصيرا  إذ جآءوكم م

نونا   وتظنون باهللا الظ

O you who believe! Remember Allah's Favour to you, when there came against you hosts, and We sent against them a wind and forces that you saw not [i.e. troops of angels during the battle of

AlAhzab (the Confederates)]. And Allah is Ever All-Seer of what you do. When they came upon you from above you and from below you, and when the eyes grew wild and the hearts reached to the

throats, and you were harbouring doubts about Allah. 46

This does not contradict the subject because even though the heart is firm, due to the large amount [of people and their influence]:

45 [3:173-174] 46 [33:9-10]

15

Page 17: The Fiqh of ﷲ ﮫﻈﻔﺣ Reliance upon - Darussaafi · The Fiqh of Reliance upon the Lord of the Slaves1 Lecture Delivered by: ... 8 Mentioned by Hafidh Dhahabi in Siyar ‘Alam

There, the believers were tried and shaken with a mighty shaking. 47

So like that, Allah turned away the polytheists and sufficed the believers from fighting :

اهللا الذين كفروا بغيظهم لم ينالوا خيرا وكفى اهللا المؤمنين القتال وكان اهللا قويا عزيز  ورد

And Allah drove back those who disbelieved in their rage, they gained no advantage (booty, etc.). Allah sufficed for the believers in the fighting (by sending against the disbelievers a severe wind and

troops of angels). And Allah is Ever All-Strong, All-Mighty. 48

They were not killed despite the large groups [of enemies] and nothing of that occurred. It was wind [which Allah sent]. Likewise, from truthfulness of relying upon Allah, the Exalted, is that Allah brings forth great amazement regarding this affair. Oh Muslims, how much disturbance, shakiness, [and] falter do the hearts have due to the absence of the means. This is a great aspect of having trust in Allah, for the one who puts his trust in Allah, He will suffice him. Allah the Exalted said: فونك بالذين من دونه ومن يضـلل اهللا فما له من هـاد  ومن يهد اهللا فما له من  أليس اهللا بكاف عبده ويخو

أليس اهللا بعزيز ذى انتقام ضل  م

Is not Allah Sufficient for His slave? Yet they try to frighten you with those (whom they worship) besides Him! And whom Allah sends astray, for him there will be no guide. And whomsoever Allah

guides, for him there will be no misleader. Is not Allah All-Mighty, Possessor of Retribution? 49

The meaning of that is: do not be afraid of those besides Him. Allah says explaining that Shaytan frightens the believers through his army:

ؤمنين ف أولياءه فال تخافوهم وخافون إن كنتم م يطـن يخو  إنما ذلكم الش

It is only Shaytan (Satan) that suggests to you the fear of his Auliya' [supporters and friends (polytheists, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah and in His Messenger, Muhammad)], so fear them

not, but fear Me, if you are (true) believers. 50

Imaan (i.e. the faith of the believers) in this verse here means putting trust in Allah and relying upon Him. Allah does not have a comparative:

مد  لم يلد ولم يولد  ولم يكن له كفوا أحد  قل هو اهللا أحد  اهللا الص

Say (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)): "He is Allah, (the) One. Allah-us-Samad (The Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need, He neither eats nor drinks). He begets not, nor was

He begotten. And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him." 51

Whoever Allah suffices, then he is sufficed.

Is not Allah Sufficient for His slave? 52

Although the context of this verse is regarding being protected from the enemy due to the latter part of the verse: “Yet they try to frighten you with those (whom they worship) besides Him”, there are other sufficiences: the sufficiency from the evil of Shaytan, the greatest of enemies on the earth. Also Allah suffices the evil of worries, the evil that occurs from fatigue and tiredness, and also in providing the provisions.

Is not Allah Sufficient for His slave? 53

Allah is sufficient for the slaves.

From the aspects of Taqwa and confidence in Allah is being pleased. A group of people came to the believer from the family of Fir’awn [who] came alone and called them to Allah. Musa was driven away and he (this man) remained among them:

"And O my people! How is it that I call you to salvation while you call me to the Fire! You invite me to disbelieve in Allah (and in His Oneness), and to join partners in worship with Him, of which I have no knowledge, and I invite you to the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving! No doubt you call me to (worship) one who cannot grant (me) my request (or respond to my invocation) in this world or in the Hereafter. And our return will be to Allah, and Al-Musrifun (i.e. polytheists and arrogants, those who commit great sins, the transgressors of Allah's set limits)! They shall be the

dwellers of the Fire! And you will remember what I am telling you, and my affair I leave it to Allah. Verily, Allah is the All-Seer of (His) slaves." 55

What occurred? They were not able to do anything to him.

So Allah saved him from the evils that they plotted (against him), while an evil torment encompassed Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people. 56

The whole nation was destroyed and the believer from the family of Fir’awn was in the middle of them. He was not a Prophet; he was a believer from the believers and Allah saved him from among them. Among Fir’awan who used to kill the people with a great killing. Amazing - amazing is the affair of putting trust in Allah. How many people do you see now greatly abstaining from destruction in the worldly life. Allah said about the hypocrites: دقـت والذين ال يجدون إال جهدهم فيسخرون منهم سخر اهللا عين من المؤمنين في الص و  الذين يلمزون المط

منهم ولهم عذاب أليم استغفر لهم أو ال تستغفر لهم

55 [40:41-44] 56 [40:45]

18

Page 20: The Fiqh of ﷲ ﮫﻈﻔﺣ Reliance upon - Darussaafi · The Fiqh of Reliance upon the Lord of the Slaves1 Lecture Delivered by: ... 8 Mentioned by Hafidh Dhahabi in Siyar ‘Alam

Those who defame such of the believers who give charity (in Allah's Cause) voluntarily, and those who could not find to give charity (in Allah's Cause) except what is available to them, so they mock

at them (believers), Allah will throw back their mockery on them, and they shall have a painful torment. Whether you (O Muhammad) ask forgiveness for them (hypocrites) or ask not forgiveness

for them. 57

The point of the verse:  ولو أنهم رضوا مآ ءاتـهم اهللا ورسوله وقالوا حسبنا اهللا سيؤتينا اهللا من فضله ورسوله إنآ إلى اهللا رغبون

Would that they were contented with what Allah and His Messenger gave them and had said: "Allah is Sufficient for us. Allah will give us of His Bounty, and (also) His Messenger (from alms, etc.). We

implore Allah (to enrich us)." 58

That is: He is sufficient for us and He will give us from His bounty. Likewise the Messenger of Allah .will give them and he used to give them what Allah gave him

“We implore Allah (to enrich us)." 59

All that indicates that having trust in Allah is a [means of] warding off destruction, even if he is cursed, criticized, defamed, and it is said: how? Or: Why? And it comes to him what comes to him.

And had said: "Allah is Sufficient for us. Allah will give us of His Bounty, and (also) His Messenger (from alms, etc.)” 60

The soul will be tranquil, relaxed, and he does not need to say what the people are accustomed to saying: why was he given? What was he given? Why was he not given?

O Allah! No one can withhold what You give, or give what You withhold, and the riches cannot

avail a wealthy person with You. 61

When the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) returned from Hunain and it was requested from him to divide the war booty between them, until his upper garment was snatched away, he said:  ال تجدوني بخيال وال كذوبا وال جبانا    أعطوني ردائي، لو كان لي عدد هذه العضاه نعما لقسمته بينكم، ثم

“Give me my cloak. If I had as many camels as these thorny trees, I would have distributed them

amongst you and you will not find me [to be] a miser, liar, or a coward.” 62

The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) distributed between them and he said on this occasion and others:

 إنما أنا قاسم واهللا معطي

I am Al-Qasim (i.e. the distributor) and Allah is the Giver. 63

Also you see in terms of managing relationships and affairs of judgement: “do such and such and don’t do such and such”, such that if a person relied upon Allah - meaning following the evidences - obeying Allah, establishing the Legislation of Allah regarding himself, being far removed from disobedience, avoiding oppositions, (i.e putting trust in Allah), then it is the source of victory. Allah said:

If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; and if He forsakes you, who is there after Him that can help you? 64

By Allah, my brothers, all the possible resources are not support. These are means and Allah makes easy the means whatever He wills and how He wills. The evidence for that is the statement of Allah:

يـأيها الذين ءامنوا إذا لقيتم فئة فاثبتوا

O you who believe! When you meet (an enemy) force, take a firm stand against them. 65

Being firm is from reliance upon Allah, the Exalted. The Meaning is: have trust in Allah and be firm.

and remember the Name of Allah much (both with tongue and mind), so that you may be successful. And obey Allah and His Messenger. 66

This is also from having trust upon Allah and then obeying Him.

And do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength depart, and be patient. Surely, Allah is with those who are As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.). And be not like those who come out of their homes boastfully and to be seen of men, and hinder (men) from the Path of

Allah. and Allah is Muhitun (encircling and thoroughly comprehending) all that they do. 67

They do not have anything. Everything they do, big or small, hidden or apparent, Allah is Muhitun over it. Therefore say:

Say you (O Muhammad): "Indeed the affair belongs wholly to Allah.” 68

Place that in your soul that everything belongs to Allah. Allah says:

I (Muhammad) have been commanded only to worship the Lord of this city (Makkah), Him Who has sanctified it and His is everything. And I am commanded to be from among the Muslims (those

who submit to Allah in Islam). And to recite the Quran. 69

All the affairs return back to Allah.

Say you (O Muhammad): "Indeed the affair belongs wholly to Allah.” 70

Allah says:

Lo! You are those who have argued for them in the life of this world, but who will argue for them

on the Day of Resurrection against Allah, or who will then be their defender? 71

The one who does not put his trust in Allah, then who is it that will establish his affair? Who will defend him? Who will grant him refuge? Who will give him? There will be none. He will [be] driven to destruction and opposes his Lord:

سول  ومن يشاقق الر

And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger (Muhammad)

Opposing the Religion of Allah

Have concern for the Tawakul in Allah and Allah will be a Wakil (Trustee, Disposer of affairs, Guardian, etc.). Oh believers, if a person had a wakil from the humans, then it would be a great affair. Perhaps he would be friendly/easy-going and perhaps he will have great joy and when an issue occurs he will say: my Wakil will establish it, such and such. However, if you put your trust in Allah, He will be your Wakil in everything. You are weak and Allah will be your Wakil.

O Prophet (Muhammad)! Verily, We have sent you as witness, and a bearer of glad tidings, and a

warner, And as one who invites to Allah [Islamic Monotheism, i.e. to worship none but Allah (Alone)] by His Leave, and as a lamp spreading light (through your instructions from the Quran and

the Sunnah - the legal ways of the Prophet ). And announce to the believers (in the Oneness of Allah and in His Messenger Muhammad) the glad tidings, that they will have from Allah a Great

Bounty. And obey not the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and harm them not (till you are ordered). And put your trust in Allah, and Sufficient is Allah as a Wakil (Trustee, or Disposer of affairs). 73

If you make Allah your Trustee, He will suffice you. If Allah is a Trustee of your affair, He will suffice you. Sufficient is Allah as Wakil.

And harm them not (till you are ordered). 74

The People of Knowledge said it means: pardon them and let not any harm come from you and be patient . In face of their harm, [remain] obedient to Allah [whilst] turning away from them. 75

Similar to that is the statement of Sa’d ibn Ubadah when he complained about what this group - the hypocrites - said:   قال كذا وكذا  "   .  قال اعف عنه يا رسول    أى سعد ألم تسمع إلى ما قال أبو حباب  يريد عبد اهللا بن أبى

He said: Sa'd, haven't you heard what Abu Hubab (meaning 'Abdullah b. Ubayy) has said? He has said so and so. Sa'd said: O Messenger of Allah, forgive and pardon [him]. 76

That is: harm him not and turn away from them. Allah revealed an attestment to the statement of Sa’d:

فاعفوا واصفحوا حتى يأتى اهللا بأمره

But forgive and overlook, till Allah brings His Command. 77

That is: this harm which occurs will not harm you.

They will do you no harm, barring a trifling annoyance. 78

They will not harm you except with pure annoyance. This overlooking is from putting trust in Allah, turning away, and pardoning also.

And Sufficient is Allah as a Wakil (Trustee, or Disposer of affairs). 79

Similar to this, there was a man who had a debt. He put a hole in some wood and put the debt inside and throw it in the ocean and put his trust in Allah. He said that he would rely upon Allah that it would reach the creditor. Until that creditor needed some firewood, and the story is in Saheeh al-Bukhari , and he carved it and found that money inside. He took the money and after a while 80

when the appointed time for the debt had come and the debtor wanted to fulfil it, the creditor told him:

Allah has delivered the money on your behalf. 81

He found the money [by] itself, the wood, and the letter. Sufficient is Allah as a Patron and sufficient is Allah as a Wakil.

In Saheeh Muslim on the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) [there is a narration] [regarding] one of those who put their trust in Allah and established the Religion on himself and the earth: if anything [of] produce came from the garden, he would divide it into three portions: one portion which he would eat [along with] those from his relatives and children, one portion which he invests back into the garden, and one third which he gives to the poor and needy. The people were in a drought and a cloud was above his garden and the water [was] flowing on his trees and garden. [The voice said]: irrigate the land of so and so . It was an affair from the Lord of 82

the Worlds. This is the truthful reliance upon Allah. Reliance is also regarding provisions. Allah says:

And so many a moving (living) creature there is, that carries not its own provision! Allah provides for it and for you. And He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. 83

Also reliance upon Allah regarding those who oppress you: turn away from them, and forgive and overlook [them]. Turn away from them: حيم فإن تولوا فقل ن أنفسكم عزيز عليه ما عنتم حريص عليكم بالمؤمنين رءوف ر  لقد جآءكم رسول م

 حسبى اهللا

Verily, there has come unto you a Messenger (Muhammad) from amongst yourselves (i.e. whom you know well). It grieves him that you should receive any injury or difficulty. He (Muhammad SAW) is anxious over you (to be rightly guided, to repent to Allah, and beg Him to pardon and forgive your sins, in order that you may enter Paradise and be saved from the punishment of the Hell-fire), for

the believers (he is) full of pity, kind, and merciful. But if they turn away, say (O Muhammad): "Allah is sufficient for me.” 84

Perhaps the people will turn away from you. Will everyone who turns away from you restrict your chest? No. “Allah is sufficient for me.”

But if they turn away, say (O Muhammad): "Allah is sufficient for me. La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), in Him I put my trust and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.

85

Truthfulness in the reliance upon Allah is at the times of illnesses, sicknesses, [and] pains [also]:

فال كاشف له إال هو  وإن يمسسك اهللا بضر

And if Allah touches you with hurt, there is none who can remove it but He. 86

If that occurs to you, then putting your trust in Allah is from the greatest forms of cure by the bounty of Allah, the Exalted. The Scholars agreed that the greatest cure for the hearts and the body is the truthful reliance in the Originator. Look at the calamities that afflict the people, the crimes, and great affairs - it weakens this and they also do not have trust in Allah.

No calamity befalls, but with the Leave [i.e. decision and Qadar (Divine Preordainments)] of Allah, and whosoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart [to the true Faith with certainty, i.e. what has

befallen him was already written for him by Allah from the Qadar (Divine Preordainments)]. 87

His heart will be a guided one: reliant upon Allah in all its affairs [and it] will become pleased. Whoever is pleased will have pleasure and whoever is displeased will have displeasure. That is the taste of Imaan. The people, they ask you, have severity towards you, etc., but with your Iman you will have cheerfulness. Also, adornment, glory, and light.

And he for whom Allah has not appointed light, for him there is no light. 88

He will live in tranquility:

القلوب   قلوبهم بذكر اهللا أال بذكر اهللا تطمئن   الذين ءامنوا وتطمئن

Those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism), and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah, Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest. 89

He will also have a great life, which others will not attain, due to that trust in Allah, the Exalted. On the day of Uhud, it occurred to the believers as you know and Allah mentioned [it] in Surah Ala Imraan - as in, Surah Ala Imran has the great story of Uhud. From that:

(And remember) when you ran away (dreadfully) without even casting a side glance at anyone. That is: polytheists ascended upon them by the leadership of Khalid ibn Walid and it occurred to them what Allah mentioned:

ا بغم سول يدعوكم فى أخراكم فأثـبكم غم  والر

And the Messenger (Muhammad) was in your rear calling you back. There did Allah give you one distress after another.

Distress because they fled and another distress because Shaytan made clear that the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) was supposedly killed. There were seventy people among them. The second distress was more severe.

There did Allah give you one distress after another by way of requital to teach you not to grieve for

that which had escaped you, nor for that which had befallen you. 90

A person benefits from this: that from good reliance and confidence in Allah [is] that he will not be afflicted with sadness in his heart regarding the past. Otherwise he will remain in anxiety asking:

88 [24:40] 89 [13:28] 90 [3:153]

why? How? etc., so he wastes his affair. Instead he closes his heart, makes effort, busies with the obedience of Allah and with something that will preoccupy him. Imam Muslim reports in his Saheeh from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said:

احرص على ما ينفعك واستعن باهللا وال تعجز وإن أصابك شىء فال تقل لو أني فعلت كان كذا وكذ

Strive for that which gives you benefit (in the Hereafter) and seek help from Allah and do not lose heart, and if anything (in the form of trouble) comes to you, don't say: “If I had not done that, it

would not have happened so and so.” 91

You will be left in worry, anxiety, and with restriction of the chest. Also you will be afflicted with pain, feeling of loss, and sadness. To turn away this evil:

ولكن قل قدر اهللا وما شاء فعل

But say: “Allah did that which He had ordained to do." 92

Look towards the future and do what Allah has honored you with. He saved you from what was greater than what befell you, which is only by the permission of Allah:

 ومن يؤمن باهللا يهد قلبه

Whosoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart [to the true Faith with certainty, i.e. what has befallen him was already written for him by Allah from the Qadar (Divine Preordainments)]. 93

Also, in alliance. Allah will be your ally:

من عادى لي وليا فقد آذنته بالحرب

Whosoever shows enmity to a Wali (friend) of Mine, then I have declared war against him. 94

Allah will declare war on the one who shows enmity to you if your heart is truthful in its reliance upon Him. How much do we see from this portion of great benefits? Even a person with truthful reliance upon his Lord will find contentment, patience, firmness, good character, good etiquette, and

speaking the truth. All of that is fruits and benefits of putting trust in Allah. The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said:

Let not the fear of the people stop any one of you from saying the truth if he sees it, witnesses it, or

hears it. 95

Physical or metaphorical weakness, the dominance of Shaytan and the enemies, occurs due to weakness of trust in Allah. The evidences for that are many:

يـر تغـدو خماصا وتـروح بطانا   توكله لرزقكم كما يـرزق الط   لو أنكم تتوكلون على اهللا حق

If you were to rely upon Allah with the reliance He is due, you would be given provision like the birds: they go out hungry in the morning and come back with full bellies in the evening. 96

O Allah! I surrender to You and entrust all my affairs to You and depend upon You for Your Blessings both with hope and fear of You. There is no fleeing from You, and there is no place of

protection and safety except with You O Allah! I believe in Your Book (the Qur'an) which You have revealed and in Your Prophet (Muhammad) whom You have sent. 97

That is what the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) used to say when he went to his sleep. All that affirms that the affair is all for Allah. This is a speech which I wanted to remind myself of regarding this beautiful subject [with], which we, the gathering of the Muslims and listeners are in need of: having truthful reliance upon Allah. In everything, there is not a single thing except a Muslim needs to put his trust in Allah regarding it - in his day, night, public, private, external, internal, entering, exiting, statements, actions, and the remaining of his movements and rest. If his trust in Allah is deficient, then the balance of his entire life is deficient.

I ask Allah, the Almighty to grant us good trust in Him, good confidence upon Him, and to defend us and our Land, this good land, and the remaining lands of the Muslims from every harm and evil, and that He makes us guided ones who guide others, who have confidence upon Him and trust in Him. And All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.
