Finley’s Newsletter VOLUME 6, ISSUE 3 FINLEY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH JUNE, JULY, AUGUST 2016 FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Finley Church Family, The summer months are here and we have much going on at Finley United Methodist Church during the upcoming summer of 2016. We have much ministry to accomplish and special events which bring our church family together. If you have not planned on giving some of your energy and time to these events listed in this newsletter, please consider doing “your part” in helping serve Jesus and His Church. Also, don’t forget to make Jesus a priority in the summer. Some people forget the Son when the sun peaks its head out! The remainder of this letter goes out to those families who have lost loved ones. We have had many special people of Finley Church pass from this temporary world into the Eternal one (Revelation 21). Personally, I am in an emotional whirlwind because of having so many funerals, one after the other, in the last 2 ½ months. Within two months of one another, we have also lost a six week old baby (Skyler Shirer) and a wonderful young girl who was one day shy of her twelfth birthday (Jada Mallory). We have lost four adult members and numerous “other” family relations linked to our church Body. Death is certain to all who are living. We know people have their “life span” and older adults exit from this life into heaven. The average life will be around 70-85 years. What about the “unexpected death?” Where are the answers for the survivors in these times? Who is to blame? Is anyone to blame? What do I say as a pastor to the families of those asking valid, “Why” questions? I have learned over the years I don’t have to have all the answers. I don’t need to say much. A few things which help me help others are the following: 1) Presence/Touch Our “being there” is what people need and what they remember. We have Christ in us and Christ helps us sense what our brothers and sisters are going through. As the old saying goes, “People don’t care how much you know; until they know how much you care.2) Silence Saying nothing is more powerful than words! In a culture that must fill up every empty space with sounds and busyness; the most powerful thing as Christians is to have the sensitivity of Jesus and “be there” with people. Cry with people, don’t “try to fix” the situation with stupid answers (i.e. It must be God’s Will; I know what you’re going through…) and let them know your there and so is Jesus. I heard it said one time, “the teacher doesn’t talk during the test.” 3) Listen Not just to words, but pain and facial expressions. A great counselor is a wonderful listener. 80% of good counseling is listening really engaged. Let them tell the stories of their loved one. Let them remember the highlights and joys they’ve had. Put yourself “in their shoes.” 4) Prayer This may seem obvious, but prayer is the presence and comfort of God over their life and situation. People are more open to prayer in pain than all other times combined. 5) Scripture - Psalm 34:15-18, “(15) The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry; (16) the face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. (17) The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. (18) The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. (19) A righteous man may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all.” At first, only use Scripture to relate God to their pain and plight of heartache. Verse 18 is one I use constantly to relate that God hears a person’s broken spirit. Then use Scripture - at a later time - to bring comfort (Rev. 21; Isaiah 65 “heaven”). As your pastor, I don’t have all the answers. But, I will point you to the One who is my “All in All” and who has promises in His Word for us to cling to in the worst of times. Finley’s Newsletter VOLUME 6, ISSUE 3 FINLEY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH JUNE, JULY, AUGUST 2016

FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Finley Church Family,

The summer months are here

and we have much going on at

Finley United Methodist Church

during the upcoming summer of

2016. We have much ministry

to accomplish and special events

which bring our church family

together. If you have not

planned on giving some of your

energy and time to these events

listed in this newsletter, please

consider doing “your part” in

helping serve Jesus and His

Church. Also, don’t forget to

make Jesus a priority in the

summer. Some people forget

the Son when the sun peaks its

head out!

The remainder of this letter

goes out to those families who

have lost loved ones. We have

had many special people of

Finley Church pass from this

temporary world into the Eternal

one (Revelation 21).

Personally, I am in an emotional

whirlwind because of having so

many funerals, one after the

other, in the last 2 ½ months.

Within two months of one

another, we have also lost a six

week old baby (Skyler Shirer)

and a wonderful young girl who

was one day shy of her twelfth

birthday (Jada Mallory). We

have lost four adult members

and numerous “other” family

relations linked to our church

Body.

Death is certain to all who

are living. We know people

have their “life span” and older

adults exit from this life into

heaven. The average life will be

around 70-85 years. What about

the “unexpected death?” Where

are the answers for the survivors

in these times? Who is to

blame? Is anyone to blame?

What do I say as a pastor to the

families of those asking valid,

“Why” questions?

I have learned over the years

I don’t have to have all the

answers. I don’t need to say

much. A few things which help

me help others are the

following: 1) Presence/Touch – Our “being

there” is what people need and

what they remember. We have

Christ in us – and Christ helps us

sense what our brothers and sisters

are going through. As the old

saying goes, “People don’t care

how much you know; until they

know how much you care.”

2) Silence – Saying nothing is

more powerful than words! In a

culture that must fill up every

empty space with sounds and

busyness; the most powerful thing

as Christians is to have the

sensitivity of Jesus and “be there”

with people. Cry with people,

don’t “try to fix” the situation with

stupid answers (i.e. It must be

God’s Will; I know what you’re

going through…) and let them

know your there – and so is Jesus. I

heard it said one time, “the teacher

doesn’t talk during the test.”

3) Listen – Not just to words, but

pain and facial expressions. A

great counselor is a wonderful

listener. 80% of good counseling

is listening – really engaged. Let

them tell the stories of their loved

one. Let them remember the

highlights and joys they’ve had.

Put yourself “in their shoes.”

4) Prayer – This may seem

obvious, but prayer is the presence

and comfort of God over their life

and situation. People are more

open to prayer in pain than all other

times combined.

5) Scripture - Psalm 34:15-18,

“(15) The eyes of the Lord are on

the righteous and his ears are

attentive to their cry; (16) the face

of the Lord is against those who do

evil, to cut off the memory of them

from the earth. (17) The righteous

cry out, and the Lord hears them;

he delivers them from all their

troubles. (18) The Lord is close to

the brokenhearted and saves those

who are crushed in spirit. (19) A

righteous man may have many

troubles, but the Lord delivers him

from them all.”

At first, only use Scripture to relate

God to their pain and plight of

heartache. Verse 18 is one I use

constantly to relate that God hears

a person’s broken spirit. Then use

Scripture - at a later time - to bring

comfort (Rev. 21; Isaiah 65

“heaven”).

As your pastor, I don’t

have all the answers. But, I

will point you to the One who

is my “All in All” and who has

promises in His Word for us

to cling to in the worst of

times.

Love,

Pastor Jerry Ernst (Psalm 16:6)

Hospital Visits from Pastor Jerry (FYI)

Because of privacy laws all members of Finley Church must call church office (740) 282-9795, to let us know if you are in the hospital – desiring a pastoral visit. The hospital has informed Pastor Jerry, that from now on, he cannot check the hospital church list to see if Finley’s people are in the hospital. Due to this change, the only way for the Pastor to know if you are in the hospital is for you to call Finley Church (740-282-9795). Sorry about this inconvenience. Pastor Jerry

FINANCE In our last newsletter we

reported we were required to

order 20 less numbered tithing

envelopes for calendar year

2017 than for 2016. Church

members currently assigned

numbers in the range from 121

through 140, therefore, will not

receive these numbered tithing

envelopes in 2017. At the end

of this year letters will be sent to

the 14 members who will be

affected by this change. The

letters will provide two options

from which each affected

individual can choose: 1) A new

currently unassigned envelope

number within the 1 through

120 range can be assigned, or 2)

The currently assigned envelope

number can be retained, but the

individual will have to fill out

an unnumbered envelope

available in the sanctuary pews.

Responses from the 14 affected

church members should be

submitted to the Finance

Committee only after receipt of

our letter.

When the Associate Pastor Fund

was initiated, the plan was to

raise a full year’s salary and

benefit expense of $42,500 by

the end of July 2016. An

anonymous church member had

already pledged to provide the

salary and benefits amount for

the prior two years. The

Associate Pastor Fund was

intended to fund the Associate

Pastor’s third year of

employment. After our fund

raising plan was initiated, we

received a $15,000 check from

the East Ohio District to be used

to supplement funding the

Associate Pastor position.

Because we already had a

benefactor funding this position

from July 2014 through July

2016, and a fundraiser to

support this position into July

2017, the East Ohio Conference

funds will be used to fund the

Associate Pastor position into

July 2018.

The East Ohio Conference also

indicated we would receive

another $10,000 in 2016, and

another $5,000 in 2017. At the

end of April 2016 a second

check from the East Ohio

Conference in the amount of

$15,000 was received. After

verifying that this check

represented both the 2016 and

2017 support, since only

$10,000 was designated for

receipt in 2016, this check was

deposited in early May and will

be reflected on the May 2016

Associate Pastor Fund Financial

Report.

As of the end of April 2016 our

fundraiser total was $25,357.22,

which is $9,642.78 below our

April 2016 goal of $35,000.

Your continued support of this

fund is vital. If you are not

currently a regular donor of this

fund, please consider supporting

this ministry. The future of our

church depends, in a large part,

upon growing our youth and

young adult ministries, the main

focus of this position. Your

prayerful consideration to

supporting this effort is

requested.

Pastor Jerry plans to offer

Adult Membership

Classes August 15, 22, 29

and September 12, 19 and

26. (Six Mondays)

Please contact him or the

church office if you’re

interested.

Be aware that there is a Logan Avenue exit in Steubenville and a Logan exit in Mingo. At the end of the exit ramp, turn UP the hill and go straight until you come to a shelter house on the left. The first shelter house is ours. It is larger than the next one and sets down lower. Use extra caution when entering the parking area!! PLEASE RSVP, so we know how many we need to serve. Respond to Martha Sisler, 154 Montgomery Lane, Mingo Jct., OH 43938 or [email protected] (no forwards, please!)
