  • SYSTEM CHANGE / CHANGING POWER RELATIONS / FIGHTING MULTIPLE CRISES

    - Climate crisis- inherently unjust!

    - Energy crisis, almost 1 billion people across the planet, 70% people in Moz without have access to electricity

    - Biodiversity crisis

    - Covid-19 pandemic and multiple health crises

    - Political crises,democracy threatened

    - Inequality crisis. Richest 5% contributed 37% of emissions from 1990 to 2015!

    - Unemployment crisis, people are struggling to survive

  • WHY DO WE CALL IT CLIMATE JUSTICE?

    • The Climate Crisis is inherently unjust- those who didn’t create the crisis are already being affected the most.

    • The Climate Crisis is not a carbon issue, its not a science issues, it is very much a justice issue.

    • In addressing the climate crisis we should also deal with the other inter-related crises, and not make them worse.

  • JAPAN’S ROLE IN INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE POLITICS? VERY NEGATIVE

    - Japanese government still does not commit to reduce Japan’s emissions based on Japan’s fair share and historical responsibility

    - Japanese govt is not giving the climate finance based on Japan’s fair share of the climate debt

    - Japanese govt and institutions like JBIC and JICA continue to fund dirty fossil fuel projects in Indonesia, Vietnam, other places in south east Asia and in Africa- example- gas in Mozambique

    - Japanese govt, JBIC, JICA wanted to fund Prosavana in Mozambique- but WE STOPPED THEM!

JAPANESE GOVT IS A PART OF THE PROBLEM !!

Plus- high level of consumption in Japan will need to change.

  • A crisis affecting people and the planet

  • NO TO ‘NET ZERO’! YES TO REAL ZERO!

  • NO TO FALSE SOLUTIONS! NO TO REDD!

  • REAL SOLUTIONS TO THE CLIMATE CRISIS- System change!

    - People Power! Building our peoples’ ability to challenge the crises

    - Decentralized, community-owned renewable energy systems

    - Community level food systems

    - Peasant agro-ecology, food sovereignty, small holder farmers feed 70% of the world currently

    - Community forests management

    - Economic justice solutions for people not for corporates

    - Dismantle corporate power

    - Gender justice is key to stopping the climate crisis
