WORD OF LIFE
“When violent crime impacts a community there is a temptation to respond with anger and vengeance. But the Gospel calls for rehabilitation, reconciliation, and restoration and teaches us to respect the dignity of all human beings, even those guilty of committing horren-dous crimes.”

My dear parishioners, As I return to the parish this weekend, I wish to thank all of you who very generously helped with our carpet replacement project at St. Patrick Church in Amboy. Such a project is both an opportunity to practice charity and a concrete reminder that we are a family of faith. We lend our hands and our prayers to help one another. Our service is a very real way of exercising and sharing our faith.
Whether one is a lay person, consecrated religious, or ordained minister (bishop, priest, or deacon), sharing and de-fending our faith at times can feel like a daunting task or a heavy responsibility. Our weakness and sinfulness may have us confessing, like the Prophet Isaiah in our first reading: “I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips” (Is 6:5). Or it may have us saying, like St. Peter in this Sunday’s Gospel: “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Lk 5:8). Yet, it is precisely in that honest realization of our need for God’s mercy that the Lord calls us into his service. Jesus says to Peter: “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men” (Lk 5:10). Jesus not only offers us his forgiveness, but he also sends us his Holy Spirit so that we can overcome our fears and feelings of unworthiness in order to “catch” others for him. Let us give thanks for the generous and merciful love of Jesus who continues to choose and call us to go out and bring others to him. And, in response to that call, let us, like Isaiah, have the courage to say: “Here I am, send me!” (Is 6:8)
