Visitor Information

Welcome to those of you here for the first time. If you have children, they are invited to join the Church School at 10:30 am with our trained teachers. The classroom is located through the door at the front right of the chapel and down the hall; please ask if you need help finding it. The children will join us in church at the Peace and for Communion. All baptized chil-dren of any age are welcome to receive communion.

Please join in the singing! Hymnals are located in the pew and the num-bers are listed in the leaflet. “S” numbered hymns are found in the front of the Hymnal 1982. The Book of Common Prayer may also be found in the rack in front of you.

We are a self-supporting congregation, so when we pass the plate in the middle of the service, please be generous. Today’s collection will support our ministries to the community.

At the communion, God welcomes all to the heavenly banquet. The Episcopal Church offers the sacraments to anyone baptized in any denomi-nation who, through prayer and thoughtful consideration, desires them. Please come to the communion rail to receive the bread and wine, whether you are an Episcopalian or not, or to receive a blessing.

When coming to the rail for communion, please kneel or stand at the rail from right to left until the rail is full. You may receive both the wafer and wine, the wafer only, or may ask for a blessing. Please let the priest know if you need gluten free.

Our priest, Debbie, is available after the service to answer any questions you might have. Please let her know your thoughts about today’s service.

We ask that you sign the guestbook at the entrance of the church. If you want more information, our website is www.gracechurchsalem.org. Our weekly newsletter, called Grace Notes, can be found there. If you wish to receive the newsletter, simply go to the website, open Grace Notes and subscribe.

We hope you find the service meaningful and the embrace of our com-munity inviting.

Thank you for praying with us today.

The Word of the Lord

The Lessons The people sit. Jewish Scripture Jeremiah 31:31-34 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new cove-nant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. .

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 97:1–2,7–12

1 The LORD is King; let the earth rejoice; * let the multitude of the isles be glad. 2 Clouds and darkness are round about him, * righteousness and justice are the foundations of his throne. 7 Confounded be all who worship carved images and delight in false gods! * Bow down before him, all you gods. 8 Zion hears and is glad, and the cities of Judah rejoice, * because of your judgments, O LORD. 9 For you are the LORD, most high over all the earth; * you are exalted far above all gods. 10 The LORD loves those who hate evil; * he preserves the lives of his saints and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. 11 Light has sprung up for the righteous, * and joyful gladness for those who are truehearted. 12 Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous, * and give thanks to his holy Name.

The Epistle 1 Thessalonians 2:2b–12

We had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might have made de-mands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us. You remember our labor and toil, brothers and sisters; we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you while we pro-claimed to you the gospel of God. You are witnesses, and God also, how pure, upright, and blameless our conduct was toward you believ-ers. As you know, we dealt with each one of you like a father with his children, urging and encouraging you and pleading that you lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.

Be thou my vision Slane

The Gospel John 12:20-33 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. “Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to

this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

This Week’s Lenten Study at Grace Church

In conjunction with St. Andrew's, Marblehead, St. Michael's, Marblehead, and Holy Name, Swampscott, we will be studying Atul Gawande's book, Being Mortal. This week, the session takes place at Grace Church. The evening begins at 6:30 pm with a simple supper of soup, bread and salad hosted by us. After some laid back conversation from the clergy, we will then open it up with some leading questions for everyone gathered. Please consider joining us for this interesting subject matter. Books can be pur-chased through your regular bookseller or online. Please see Melissa Barnes if you can help with the supper .

Vestry Meeting Tomorrow Night The Vestry of Grace Church will be meeting tomorrow to discuss staffing development, the Garden of Life program, to receive a property report and other important issues for our community of faith. Please keep the Vestry in your prayers.

Easter Memorials Enclosed in your leaflet is an envelope for Easter Memorials. Each year, we ask for a donation to cover the expenses of this season. Simply put your do-nation in the envelope and fill out the front. All names to be honored will be listed in the Easter Vigil and Easter Day leaflets. Please be generous.

A Diocesan Response to Gun Violence

In a joint statement from the bishops of the Episcopal Church in the Com-monwealth of Massachusetts they state, “We have all had enough of our children dying in their classrooms. We have had enough of mass shootings in which a semi-automatic rifle was the weapon of choice. We have all had enough of the cycle of trauma, shock, anger, grief and numbness, fatigue and inaction. As followers of Jesus we have a two-fold mandate: lamentation and action.” On Wednesday, March 14th, take some time to pray and cry out to God for an end to gun violence. On March 24th, join the Rector and others at the Cathedral by 11:30 am as we act by “Marching for Our Lives.” For more information and resources, go to https://www.diomass.org/news/diocesan-news/end-gun-violence-ma-bishops-call-prayer-action-march-14-24

Passion Readers

Next week, we read the Passion according to Mark during the 10:30 am service. Would you like to read one of the parts? There is a signup in the Lobby with a copy of the narrative in an envelope beneath it. Please sign up and then take a copy to rehearse. It will make the service more mean-ingful.

Bowditch News There are a couple of events coming up at the Bowditch. The 7th grade dance is coming up April 6th. They will be looking for chaperones for this event, as well as some people to come early for set-up. More information will follow next week. They have MCAS during May, so we need to come up with an idea to in-spire them to do their best. Last exam period, Sara Maurno’s mother knit-ted hats for them all, “to keep their brains warm.” In May, we will be working with the scholars in building a Little Free Li-braries. Each Bowditch 7th grader will be paired with a 7th grader from the Collins by the Spring. We are hoping to build these with both our scholars and their buddies, so we can all get to know one another better. We are asking that each notebook buddy consider giving your scholar a copy of the 2018 Yearbook, being produced by the yearbook committee. Each yearbook will cost about $10 and this would be a great end of year gift for our kids. More information will become available in April. Debbie will continue to work with both the Bowditch School and the Collins to make sure our scholars have a smooth transition. We will also be continuing our program by building a second Little Free Library in the Fall, as well as keeping up with our notebook buddies. If you would like more information on the Bowditch program, please see Debbie or Paige Nalipinski.
