It’s time to get your checks in for the February 17th Enzo Ferrari Birthday Party!
The club isn’t sending invitations in the U.S. Mail. Members should send their checks to our Treasurer, Frank Strazzabosco before or on Monday, February 11th. Frank will generate a list of attendees based on the received checks. We are expecting a large attendance!
The event includes a specially prepared Italian dinner, live music, and speaker. The evening pricing is $58.00 (member) or $116.00 (member and spouse/guest). Non-members are $65 for an individual or $130 for a couple. There will be a cash bar as well. This will be a fun evening seeing friends and acquaintances.

The PARMA!
Parma Trattoria is a true authentic Italian restaurant shared and created by the minds behind top restaurants like Firenze A Tavola, Antica Roma, Parisi, Acqua Pazza, Bacco Trattoria, and Amante Coffee. It is a culmination of the owners' rich Italian culture and expertise.
In tune with the values of the Emilia-Romagna’s region, Parma Trattoria’s philosophy is to use organic ingredients from local farmers and green, unaltered products whenever possible. Parma’s menu is vast and diverse. Traditional Italian dishes such as pastas, pizzas, salads, meat, poultry and seafood abound in various styles. The cheeses are all lactose free; a couple are made in house and the others are imported directly from Rome and Naples.
For the celebration of Enzo's birthday party, the chef will prepare a five course meal consisting of salads, antipastos, pastas, entrees and deserts. Gluten-free and vegetarian items are available upon request for anyone who would like them. Furthermore, as their menu is available online, guests are encouraged to look at the menu ahead of time and let us know if there are any special requests.
The SPEAKER!
Larry Perkins owned and raced the first ever Ferrari 250 GTO, s/n 3223. As an aerospace engineer for IBM, he was bitten by the Ferrari racing bug. Over some beers with some local SCCA buddies, he came up with the idea to acquire a 250 GTO in order to contest the upcoming Daytona Continental 2000 Kilometers. After much hunting around, he managed to find the only two cars available for sale in the world (pre-internet, mind you!) and bought one of them. With only weeks to go until the race, he and some friends stripped, rebuilt and prepared the car to run the car at one of the biggest races in the country against the biggest teams, including Luigi Chinetti's NART entries.
What followed next were adventures that no one could have predicted: infamous run-ins with Chinetti, numerous parts and engineering hurdles, and what would become the last ever FIA victory for a 250 GTO: a class win at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1966.
As the last race winner in a 250 GTO, Larry has been a guest at some the biggest car events in the world, including Pebble Beach and the Cavallino Classic. When 3223 GT was restored in 2010, it was restored by Wayne Obry and his Motion Products to the same specifications as it ran for its final victory at Daytona. Larry was called in to consult for the project as he was the only one who could identify such mysteries as, "are these really Porsche 356 running lights?" and "why do you have two different Marchal fog lights?"

A Story of a Great Ferrari Driverand Mechanic

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Tim Stanford at the Cavallino show this year. I heard so much about him and couldn’t wait to me him in person; all of what I heard was true and more. After a few minutes, I knew Tim was a true Tifoso. Anyone who knows the little known historical story of American Ferrari Factory Race Driver Mike Gammino’s Bizzarrini V12 P538 race car and his mechanic Libero Gerardi is a rarity and a true old school Ferrarista.
My fascination and passion for Ferraris began in the early 70’s when I first met Libero Giraradi, known as “Lee” to his friends. My parents took their Jaguar XJ6 to Mr. Girardi for service; as a result my father not only became his personal physician but a close friend. Thanks to this I had the fortunate opportunity to spend a great deal of time in his garage. Being a first generation Italian, I understood Italian well, and that was lucky as Mr. Girardi often spoke half in Italian and half in Italian English. Over the years, almost ten, I developed a very close relationship with Mr. Girardi. I was in awe every time I went to the shop, and vividly remember the stories Mr. Girardi recounted to me about his trips to the Ferrari factory, all amidst the Ferraris, Italian Exotics and antique Rolls Royces that he was restoring, servicing or repairing.
It wasn’t until he passed away and I saw his P538 at a Newport Rhode Island Car Show that I learned the full story of Mike Gammino’s Bizzarrini. After Ferrari was not interested in building a Can-Am car for Mike, he ordered a Bizzarrini V12 P538 commissioned by Libero Gerardi, which was delivered to his shop in 1965 located behind the Gammino Construction Company office in little Cranston, Rhode Island. The car was to have been serial # 001, the first V12 P538. However, it was crashed at the factory during testing before being delivered and Bizzarrini built a third car, numbered serial #002, that was delivered to Gammino. Many ask why the third car is numbered serial #002. It is rumored that this was because it was the second V12 P538. The first car was numbered serial # 000 and had a Chevy 327 in it.

Gammino ran the P538 at Bridgehampton; the car was #28 teal in color with a yellow triangle stripe. Unfortunately, it did not finish due to a broken oil pan caused by suspension parts on the track. Some say it was karma because it wasn’t a Ferrari. Nonetheless, as a token of gratitude for his endless passion, dedication and loyalty, Gammino gave #28 to his lifelong mechanic Gerardi. Italians are very superstitious and stories like this continue throughout history. One more recently example is that the Ferrari-Maserati deal of the 90’s failed because Enzo considered Maserati mortal enemies and no matter alive or dead that would never happen, and despite efforts after his death it didn’t. Libero kept the car until he passed away in the June 1979, perhaps this too was superstition but I believe he couldn’t part with it because it was such a gracious gesture that meant so much to him. Little did Lee know that car went on to become one of the rarest and most valuable Italian race cars in existence, appraised at $2 million in restored condition. However, I am sure even if he knew this, it would have mattered. That is the type of man Lee was; a humble, simple, honest mechanic who loved cars and what he did. My chat with Tim reminded me so much of Lee especially when I asked for a picture with him and said: “It is a pleasure to meet such a celebrity in the Ferrari world.” To which he humbly replied: “I am just a mechanic”. When he said that I knew I was in the presence of someone special. I know only of one other person like Tim and Lee, Frank Bonanno; another legendary Ferrari mechanic. Frank’s story was that at the end of an auto seminar a young instructor said to the group “You're no longer mechanics. Now you're all technicians.” Frank stood up and proudly said, “No, I'm still a mechanic.” and left. For many Ferrari greats; like Lee, Tim and Frank being a mechanic is not only a life’s work but it is their life and passion. It is an honor to be a mechanic and like one’s reputation, something to be proud of, never to be minimized or to taken away by anyone.
I too have the Italian propensity of being superstitious, and as I finally search for a Ferrari 308/328 to purchase for myself and to promote my school I believe it was no accident that I met Tim. Libero, thank you for all the time you spent with me and all that you have taught me, I miss you dearly and am fortunate to find that your passion still lives on in mechanics like Tim.
As for the P538 serial #002 it was sold a few times and one of the last owner’s Jim Phelan from the US sold it to Ulrich Buschmeier of Germany. Oddly, however, he renegotiated to own it jointly with him. Ferrari and Italian superstition and karma continue. The current joint owners proudly have arranged for the car to be displayed at the San Diego Automotive Museum in California since the early 1990’s.
