LITURGY OF THE WORD Reading I: Isaiah 60.1-6 Response: Psalm 72 Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord

2 Parish Life Weekly Schedule This column will have a rather long set-up for a bit of cleverness at the end, but maybe you will learn something on the way to the clever bit … so bear with me.

It’s not always the case, but most of the music we sing at church is poetry. Metaphoric language with a meter and rhyme. Each stanza bears the same pattern … with each line having a certain number of beats to it, the same pattern of stressed syllables, and final words with similar vowel sounds. Think of that bit of childhood nursery doggerel, “Roses are red, violets are blue; honey is sweet, and so are you.” The verse has four lines, each line is composed of four syllables, with two of them stressed, and the last syllables in lines two and three rhyming. When set to music, poems with the same pattern of syllables and stresses (called meter) can usually be sung to the same tune. For example, it’s a fun fact that the opening theme of the 1960’s sitcom “Gilligan’s Island” has the same poetic scheme as “Amazing Grace.” You don’t believe me? Here’s the first stanza of the GI theme: “Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, / a tale of a fateful trip, / that started from this tropic port, / aboard this tiny ship.” Go ahead now, sing it to the tune you know as “Amazing Grace.” It’s weird and wonderful at the same time. Sorry if I ruined “Amazing Grace” for you. So where am I going with this? Poet Carolyn Winfrey Gillette has composed a fresh poem (which she calls Christmas Pandemic Hymn) to the pattern of GREENSLEEVES. You will know that as the tune commonly used for “What Child Is This?” It helps if you hum the tune to yourself first to get it in your head. Then try singing these new words to it: “O God, We Long for Better Days” O God, we long for better days when we can be together, to celebrate your love and grace in Jesus Christ our Savior. [Refrain:] We long for Silent Night in crowded pews, by candlelight. May we who stay at home now find your Christmas blessing. We long to come and Deck the Halls this year — like many others. Yet all around we hear the calls of countless, hurting neighbors. This year, in quiet ways, we'll pray and serve and fill our days. May we who stay at home now find your Christmas blessing. We'll still, with Christian Friends, Rejoice, by phone, or by our Zooming. We'll ponder here: What Child is This? — and seek A Rose, E'er Blooming. [Refrain:] We'll love and serve and give; we'll live as Christ taught us to live. May we who stay at home now find your Christmas blessing. We long to feast and celebrate with family, friends, and neighbors. Yet this can be our gift — to wait, until the times are better. [Refrain:] Still, Still, you give us joy — a love that death cannot destroy. May we who stay at home now find your Christmas blessing.

Text: Copyright © 2020 by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette. All rights reserved. It’s not as clever as the “Gilligan’s Island”/”Amazing Grace” thing, but it is a nice set of words that can be sung to a seasonal tune asking for a blessing on a world that very much needs it in this strangest of Christmas seasons. Readings for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (January 10)

(Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7; Acts 10:34-38; Mark 1:7-11)

The evangelist Mark, who unlike Matthew and Luke does not provide a story of Christ’s Nativity, opens his Gospel with what he identifies as a quotation from Isaiah (in actu-ality a combination of words from Malachi and Isaiah). In those few verses (which we heard back on the Second Sunday of Advent) the evangelist tells us the Good News has begun in the ministry of John the Baptist. Today’s gos-pel portion follows immediately—the narrative of Jesus’ Baptism. Not the three things that happen when Jesus steps out of the water: the barrier of “the heavens” breaks open, God’s spirit pours upon Jesus, and the Father testi-fies that he is his “beloved.” You may find it a little hard to believe, but the Church holds that the same three things happened at your baptism. Take some time to consider what, if we would embrace it, that really means.

Please remember all of our homebound and hospitalized parishioners from Resurrection and St. Michael Parishes in your prayers this week.

Chalking the Door 2021: An Epiphany House Blessing Leader: Peace be to this house and to all who live, work, and visit here. The wise men came to Bethlehem in search of the Lord. They brought to him precious gifts: gold to honor the newborn king, incense to the true God in human form, and myrrh to anoint his body, which one day would die like our own. Through your Incarnation and birth, you have made all the earth holy. We ask your blessing upon this simple gift of chalk. We use it as a tool to teach our children, and they use it as a tool in their play and games. Now, with your blessing, may it become a tool for us to mark the doors of our home with the symbols of your wise servants who, so long ago, came to worship and adore you in your first home. [Mark the doorway lintel inside or outside with one or more symbols: 20 + C + M + B + 21.] O God, you used a star to show to the entire world that Jesus is your Son. On this their feast, may we, in this house, and all who come to visit, work, and play here, be guided to recognize Him in the comings and goings of our everyday throughout the coming year. May all who enter by this door find peace, comfort, joy, love, and salvation, for Christ has come to dwell in this house and in our hearts. Fill us with the light of Christ that our love for each other may go out to all. We ask this through Christ our Lord. ALL: Amen

Gospel: Matthew 2.1-12 Profession of Faith: Nicene Creed — see sidebar on front

Reading II: Ephesians 3.2-3a, 5-6 Gospel Acclamation

EUCHARISTIC ACCLAMATION Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

MYSTERY OF FAITH

We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again, until you come again.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil... and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
