The only way to improve your city’s transportation A simple idea that changes the way you plan: listen to your constituents

It’s no surprise.

Every city in the world wants to improve its transportation system:• To get more people on public transport• To reduce car traffic and make parking more effective• To reduce the carbon footprint of transportation• To improve user experiences and overall quality of life• Without increasing the burden on city budgets

Make no mistake. This is a non-trivial challenge. But it’s a challenge we can all rise to.If we start by doing one simple thing – the only thing virtually guaranteed to drive improvement…

To improve things for people who live in and travel around cities…

We have to listen to people who live in and travel around cities.

Makes sense, right?

In 2016, we started doing just that.We commissioned a major survey of 1,900 city dwellers in 19 European cities.

This, the first European Urban Transportation Survey, earned a lot of attention and generated even more discussion and debate. That’s the power of listening to the people you serve. (And there’s lots more to come.)

In that survey, we asked people important things about:• What transportation options they choose and how often.• How they feel about their commute.• How they balance things like convenience, speed, cost,

comfort, safety and carbon emissions.

And they told us.

Their answers pointed to some important opportunities, including…

• Dynamic pricing • Data integration and analytics• Mobility-as-a-Service• Multi-modal travel planning apps

Listening turned out to be such a powerful catalyst that we’ve commissioned an even more ambitious report:

The 2017 Global Transportation Study

This study will ask thousands of people in countries around the world about their transportation choices, habits, preferences and predictions.

It will follow up on last year’s insights and generate new ones, on a global scale.

A B

We’re asking important questions about the many ways people who live in cities get around:• Bikeshare • Boat • Bus • Car • Car sharing • Coach

• Metro • Motorbike • Taxi • Train • Tram…

How they think about their options…• Travel choices• Payment methods• Apps• Connection times• Information availability• Ease of access• Speed

• Price• Convenience• Reliability• Comfort• Environmental impact• Delays• Impact on their lives

B

Even how these choices make them feel.• Happy • Tired • Good • Depressed • Stressed • Angry

• Bored • Frustrated • Satisfied • Calm • Confident…

Most of all, we’re finding out what cities can do to encourage them to change their travel behavior. The report will be available in a few weeks. (Go to the sign-up page and we’ll send it to you).

This matters.

Every city in the world wants to improve its transportation system. So every city in the world has to listen harder than ever before.

Let’s listen together.
