It Taking care of fishFish are beautiful pets to own, but they take a lot of work to take care of. Here are some tips for making sure your fish are healthy, strong and live a long time:

Lifeseaunder the

PlantsThere are plants live the water, too! Some float on top of the water (lily pads), and some live in the deep (seaweed, plankton).

BirdsDon’t forget about the birds that live off of the rich ecosystem of the oceans. Some birds fly over the water (seagulls, pelicans), and some swim in the sea (penguins).

MammalsDolphins, narwhals and sea lions. They swim and spend much of their time in the water but still need to come up for air.

VertebratesFish are classified as vertebrates – this means that they have a spine and a skeleton, like sharks!

Know what kind of fish you have! Ask at pet store and do your research before buying your fish. Every fish is differ-ent, so you need to know a few basic things. If you are going to buy a fish, take this checklist with you to the pet store:

InvertebratesThese animals do not have a backbone or spine. Some invertebrates that are found in water are sea sponges, starfish and lobsters.

What should I feed my fish?

How much should I feed my fish?

How often should I feed my fish?

Is it freshwater or saltwater?

What kind of tank or bowl do I need?

Is my fish aggressive?

Can there be other fish in the tank?

How do I clean the tank?

How often do I need to replace the water?

Is there anything else I need to know about this fish?

HUNTLEY — The challengers to unseat Grafton Township Supervisor Linda Moore in February’s primary reference the need to end childish behavior and the toxicity that has plagued the township the past four years.

The incumbent Moore argues she is try-ing to defend Grafton taxpayers through a campaign of lower property taxes and shutting down any prospect of building a new township hall.

The winner of the Republican primary will face independent James Kearns in the April election.

With nearly two months until the Feb. 26 primaries, dueling campaign narratives are beginning to take shape in a hotly contest-ed supervisor race in a township afflicted by infighting and constant lawsuits.

“I’m trying to take the toxicity out of Grafton,” challenger Pam Fender said. “People in western Illinois and Chicago, you say Grafton Township, and they laugh at you. I want to bring the good name of Grafton back.”

Attorney Marty Waitzman, who is run-ning against both Moore and Fender, said his candidacy is based around the need to eliminate “the childish bickering and stonewalling” and to restore cooperation among Grafton’s elected officials.

Both he and Fender, a retiring Huntley trustee, said the supervisor race is about getting Grafton’s finances back on track after a number of lawsuits and misman-aged finances hurt its credit.

Moore has been engaged in legal battles with virtually every other elected official at Grafton since taking office in 2009 on the heels of a successful effort to block the construction of a $3.5 million township hall.

The holdover trustees from John Rossi’s supervisor tenure strongly supported the new hall, and the two sides have been locked in legal battles since. A court-ordered injunction, citing inadequate notice and sloppy preparation, prevented the township hall from being built.

Moore argues the dysfunction in Grafton will continue if voters elect Fender or Waitzman. She said the two are friendly with the current trustees and likely will

continue legal battles.Trustees Rob LaPorta, Gerry McMahon

and Barbara Murphy have not filed peti-tions to run for re-election.

Moore also said she fears the other two candidates will support a renewed effort to build a multimillion-dollar township hall. She argues Fender especially has supported the idea since 2010.

“I believe she has plans to build a new town hall, just based on her past activity,” Moore said. “I have never been in favor of a new town hall, and I will not be in favor of a new town hall unless a referendum is passed.”

The township hall issue has been off the radar since 2010 when Grafton residents resoundingly rejected a referendum about it.

Fender, who briefly served as a Grafton administrator, told the Northwest Herald in 2010 that the issue had long been “dead” and that the township couldn’t pay for a new building because Grafton’s finances were in disarray.

“She thinks I’m going to build a build-ing. I’m not going to build a Taj Mahal,” Fender said recently. “No more buildings.

Better programs.”All three candidates have been visiting

different township precincts, knocking on doors and meeting with voters.

The trio have agreed to a debate at Sun City Huntley on Feb. 6 before voters head to the polls Feb. 26.

Challengers to incumbent say they want to change cultureNEWS

Also on the ballotRoad commissioner: Tom Poznanski and Richard Dvorak are competing for the Republican nomination. The winner will face Timothy Hoeft in April.Assessor: Incumbent Bill Ottley is being challenged by fellow Republican, Alan Zielinski, in February. The winner will face Terra Jensen in April.Trustee: All seven trustee candidates will face off for four seats in April. The Republicans include incumbent Betty Zirk, Carol Williams and Robert Wagner. HUNTLEY — Centegra Health System has a busy agenda for 2013, as officials look to roll out financing and detailed designs for its $233 million hospital in Huntley before breaking ground this fall.

The dominant medical provider in McHenry County will start the new year with its architect, working on develop-ing detailed drawings by March or April, said Centegra Chief Executive Officer Michael Easley, who is eying late summer or early fall as a construction start date.

Centegra also will look to secure bonds in the first half of the year to finance 80 percent of the $233 million project, and Centegra’s foundation soon will start developing a fundraising campaign to cover the remaining costs.

“We are moving forward at a pretty good pace,” Easley said.

A swift start to the new year means that Centegra could have its third full-service hospital fully operational by win-ter 2016.

The medical group, which already has hospitals in McHenry and Woodstock,

received a long-sought state certificate in July to build a 128-bed hospital in the rapidly developing area of Huntley.

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved the certificate, after failing to take deci-sive action on the proposal in late 2011. The group has been vying for a Huntley hospital to service southern McHenry County since 2010.

The project is expected to create 1,100 permanent jobs and 800 construction jobs once crews start building the facility later this year at Reed and Haligus roads.

In the immediate future, Centegra will consult a bevy of stakeholders, including nurses, doctors, patients and community groups, about the initial and detailed designs of the $233 million project.

The group is planning an event at Sun City Huntley for the first quarter of 2013 where residents would be able to pro-vide feedback on the initial designs, said Susan Milford, Centegra’s vice president.

Officials already have been working with advisers from JP Morgan on secur-ing tax-exempt bonds to help conserve the group’s borrowing costs, Easley said. The foundation also will develop a fund-

raising goal in the coming months that will rely on support from the community and local philanthropists.

“We are acting as good stewards of the project and making sure it’s done right,” Easley said. “We want to know exactly what we are building, how it is going to flow, and how it will meet the communi-ty’s needs at the end of the day.”

The $233 million project represents the single largest investment in the booming village of Huntley, which also has a full, $69 million interchange being built at Interstate 90 and Route 47.

Village Manager Dave Johnson said officials will be meeting with Centegra before the medical group officially presents a building plan to the Plan Commission and, later, the Village Board.

The village will need to approve build-ing permits and site plans that will include designs on landscaping, building aesthetics and traffic patterns.

“It’s the single largest building project that we have ever seen,” Johnson said. “It’s a significant investment into our community, and we want to make sure it fits for our community.”

SHAW MEDIAALGONQUIN — Literacy is one of the

greatest gifts a parent can give a child, and learning the skills needed for reading and writing begins at infancy into child-hood.

Beginning Jan. 7, the Algonquin Area Public Library District will kick off its 1,001 Books Before Kindergarten pro-gram.

1,001 Books Before Kindergarten, a reading program for families with children from birth through age 5, was designed to get parents actively involved in reading to their child from birth and help foster a lifelong love of reading as children gain pre-literacy skills.

Parents will be able to register their

children for the program with their Algonquin Area Public Library Card at the Youth Services Desk beginning Jan. 7.

At registration, information will be given about the program and the library, the children’s collection and recom-mended reads, early literacy skill and early literacy practices, and a book log for the first 100 titles recorded in 1,001 Books Before Kindergarten.

After each set of 100 books are read and logged, parents and children can return to the Youth Services Desk to pick up a prize and pages for the next 100 books, and receive additional informa-tion about upcoming programs at the library.

When 1,001 books are reached, the child will get a graduation ceremony, a book, and his or her picture on the library’s wall of stars.

1,001 books read over time will make reading together a special time and become part of a daily routine. Every time a parent reads a book to a child, it counts in this program, and there will be favorite books children will want to hear over and over again.

Gibson Thorakkal and his brother, Joby, of Hanover Park, have had their downtown St. Charles candy shop open about two weeks and Thorakkal said some customers are already returning over and over again.

“People are coming for the (chocolate covered) turtles,” Thorakkal said. “They say they’re the best turtles they’ve ever had.”

The quarter-pound, chocolate covered turtles are a specialty of the Chicago Turtle Factory.

They’re giant-sized, about five times the size bought at stores, and are made

kitchen-fresh at the shop.“We make all of that,” Thorakkal said.

“... Our priority is the quality of the prod-ucts.”

This is Thorakkal’s, who’s a native of India, and his brother’s first shop. He said a partner of theirs has a candy store in Elk Grove Village which helped get them start-ed in St. Charles.

“This is a good location in St. Charles,” Thorakkal said. “There’s good walk-by traffic.”

The shop is located near a Starbucks and the Arcada Theatre.

Thorakkal said people have been telling that they’re excited there’s finally a candy shop in downtown St. Charles.

Another specialty of the Chicago Turtle Factory is the very cheesy popcorn.

“We use real cheese,” Thorakkal said.He and his brother also sell chocolate

covered orange peels, chocolate covered nuts and raisin, sugar free candies, gum-mies and toffee.

Thorakkal said customers can sample anything before they buy it.

“So far, (business) is going pretty good,” Thorakkal said.

The music of Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky will be conducted by Ignat Solzhenitsyn, son of the

Nobel Prize-winning Russian author, in the debut Batavia concert by the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. Guest

violinist Jennifer Frautschi will pick up her 1722 Stradivarius to per-form Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons.” Cheryl Wendt, the ESO’s direc-tor of marketing

and development, talks about the musical fireworks in store, includ-ing a pre-concert conversation with the maestro in the concert hall at 6:30 p.m. A New Yorker now, Solzhenitsyn

is principal guest conductor of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra.

The maestro is part of a talent search?

He was with us for one concert last season. He is one of the 12 music director finalists. We’re finishing up in May. It’s been every exciting. It’s bringing in people that normally an orchestra our size would not be able to have on a regular basis. Ignat is known around the world.

How many applications did you receive?

Over 200. The committee worked hard. (Conductors) submitted DVDs, and the committee worked it down to a group of 12 — 11 men and one woman. It’s nice when they come in, and you see them in person and how they react. Four of our musicians are (part of) the committee, so the musi-cians have a say. At least three have to agree with the decision.

What brings the ESO to Batavia? We normally play at the Hemmens

in Elgin, and four concerts a year in Schaumburg. We are looking at branching out a little bit, and extend-

ing our brand. We have a number of subscribers in the Geneva and Batavia area who said, ‘It would be great if you came down here.’ We went and looked at the new Batavia Fine Arts Centre, and it’s gorgeous. They’ve been very easy to work with, and we’re going to see if we can fill the house.

Patrons can get to know the maestro? One part of our mission is educa-

tion for all ages. Since we are bringing in all these conductors, we have asked them to (lead the) pre-concert dis-cussion. That’s been working really well. The audience gets to know them a little bit better. They try to give patrons a perspective of when the music was written, what was happen-ing with the composer … what you should listen for … why it feels the way it does.

Something entirely different is up next?

Our second concert in January is a pops concert called “Wicked Divas.”

It highlights two women who (sang) on Broadway in “Wicked.” Pops is a nice way for people to start if they’re

not sure they are ready for a classical music concert.

OUTDOOR ICE SKATINGDO IT

While most sports are forced indoors during winter weather, ice skating and hockey thrive during the cold. During the winter, many suburban park districts set up outdoor ice skating rinks for people to enjoy during the chilly winter months. One of those rinks is the Elmhurst YMCA’s outdoor rink, which is a compressed ice rink that has the same capabilities as many indoor rinks. Thanks to the compressor, the rink can function in any weather — as long as the temperature doesn’t reach upwards of 70 degrees or if it’s raining.

“It’s just amazing,” said Susan Chansey, the YMCA’s member relations and ice rink director. “It really encompasses a great sport, a great workout, and a great way to spend time with your friends and family.”

The compressors also give the YMCA the capability to create leagues and organizations. There’s a men’s hockey league, rat hockey, youth hockey, pre-hockey, holiday skating, family skating and skate school and classes. Open skates are held throughout the week at varying times. Chansey said an open skate held from 8:30 to 9:50 p.m. on Friday nights is one of the high-lights of the rink.

“Our night open skate with the sky and the stars and the outdoors is great as well,” Chansey said. “It’s a whole different experience than being inside in an enclosed space.”

WHAT YOU NEEDUnlike indoor rinks, outdoor rinks force guests to

pay attention to the weather and temperatures. Although it’s been unseasonably warm so far, when weather conditions drop, it would be ideal to have a hat, scarf, gloves and a winter coat to keep warm. Some outdoor rinks, such as the Elmhurst YMCA, also offer skate rentals for $4. Several rinks and ponds don’t provide skates, so be sure to check websites to find out before you go.

There’s also a fee for open skate, classes and leagues. The Elmhurst YMCA charges $5 for kids and $6 for adults during open skate, while fees at other rinks vary.

WHERE TO GO n The Elmhurst YMCA’s outdoor rink is open until March, and compressors keep the rink cold even

when it’s warm. There’s open skate as well as hockey leagues, skate lessons and family skate. Fees vary depending on the event, and skates are available for rent. The rink is located at 211 W. First St., Elmhurst. For details or more information, visit elmhurstymca.org or call 630-993-8900. Call the ice rink hotline at 630-834-9214 an hour before a scheduled activity to make sure the rink is open.n Naperville has several outdoor ice skating rinks that are open this winter. Although the weather has prohibited many from opening so far, once the weather hits at least 15 degrees for 72 hours straight, the rinks will be ready for skaters. Hockey is allowed at Centennial Park, 500 W. Jackson Ave., while the rink at Nike Sports Complex, 288 W. Diehl Road, permits broomball. All the other rinks are meant for open skate. Commissioners Park, 3704 111th St., and Gartner Park, 524 Gartner Road, are also open to the public. To check whether rinks are open, visit napervilleparks.org or call 630-848-5000. n There are rinks and ponds throughout Wheaton for outdoor winter fun. Lit skating rinks in Elmhurst include Northside Park at the north end of West Street, Rathje Park at Roosevelt and Delles roads, C.L. Herrick Park at Herrick at Armbrust streets and Kelly Park at 1100 Main St. has a man-made ice rink. Seven Gables on Winner’s Cup Circle and Hull Park at 1400 Hull Drive also have rinks that are not lit. Due to warm conditions, all rinks are currently closed, but will open when the weather cools. For more information on the rinks and conditions, visit wheatonparkdistrict.com or call 630-665-4710.

OUT AND ABOUT

Q: Hello, Greg, I read your article on the He-mi and found a correc-tion on the year available and some added histori-cal facts.

First, the 426 Hemi en-gine first roared to life in Chrysler’s dyno rooms in December 1963 and was coded the A-864 engine. Testing was in prepara-tion for the targeted debut at the 1964 Daytona 500. By the race’s end, Hemi-powered Dodge and Plym-outh cars took four of the top five places as Richard Petty took the win by more than a lap.

Actually, 1964 marked the first availability of the 426 Hemi in cars that could be ordered by the general public and street driven. While most were purchased for drag racing duty, anyone with money could walk into a Chrysler dealer and order a Hemi Dodge or Plymouth, get it licensed and drive it home. However, few custom-ers were aware of this fact and, accordingly, very few were ordered and driven on the street.

You mentioned the Ford 429 Hemi engine, which was actually a 427 in the development stage. In 1969 Ford fielded their own Hemi head design en-gine, the BOSS 429, which had good success against the Chrysler Hemi.

Interestingly, the street versions of the Ford Boss 429 were only installed in-to 1969 or 1970 Boss 429 Mustangs (selling enough to qualify their Hemi headed engine design for

NASCAR involvement) yet only used in the Ford Tal-ladega, a special Torino-based NASCAR aerody-namic design.

In 1965, as you men-tioned, Chrysler did not compete in NASCAR and no street-legal Hemis were sold. There was a 1965 special run of 100 Dodge and Plymouth drag race cars built, identified by “R0” VIN tag numbers for Plymouths and “W0” for Dodge while the Hemi en-gine package was called A-990.

In 1966 Chrysler of-fered the 426 Hemi in any

of their Dodge and Plym-outh B-body platform cars, including Dodge Coronet and Charger and Plym-outh Belvedere and Satel-lite two-door, four-door, convertible and even sta-tion wagons in an ef-fort to sell enough Hemis to make them a stan-dard production engine.

NASCAR thus allowed them to compete again al-though limiting the Hemi to 405 inches for 1966 rac-ing. The Street Hemi, as it is known, was a mild-er version of the original design and in a de-tuned state came in at 425 horse-power and 490 ft. lbs. of torque.

Hemis were very expen-sive to produce consid-ering the cars they were available in cost around $3,000 and the Hemi alone added near $1,000 more! Accordingly total Hemi car production in-cluding all models com-bined sold between the first available year of 1964 and the final year of 1971 was just over 10,000 total units.

Best regards, Scott Smith, from www.harms-auto.com in Washington.

Retired drivers and new cars

If you plan on driving in style after you retire, here are some smart spending and lifestyle tips to help put you be-hind the wheel of the right ride.

It’s all in the timing: You may already know that the end of the month - any month - is a better time to go car shopping than the be-ginning or even middle. That’s because sales people are eager to sell as many vehicles as possible to qualify for bonuses from manufac-turers. The same princi-ple is in play at the end of the year - times five.

Safety pays: In addi-tion to helping to keep you and your car safe, safe driving insurance discounts can add up quickly. Additionally, in some states, taking a driver improvement course may help low-er your insurance rates. AARP Driver Safety of-fers a course specifical-ly designed to help driv-ers 50 and older.

CAR Q&A

Difference in washer fluids?

Q: Is there any differ-ence in the windshield cleaners that I see in the auto parts stores?

A: This is a great question, and yes, there is a big difference. The blue fluid is the most common and often dis-counted. The good stuff is orange or purple.
