Notes from the Editor:

Hello everyone

As I write the world is still abuzz about the Royal Wedding. What a lot of happi-ness and joy it provided, just what we all needed after our dull winter and soggy, early spring!

There is so much going on around and in Farmborough in June you are sure to find something to enjoy. The Royal Bath and West show ends on 2nd June. 9th June is the 10th anniversary of World Gin Day. World Gin Day? Yes please! Ha! Ha! There are coffee mornings, summer fun days, festival after festival and, most important-ly, the opening of our shop... hopefully at the end of June.

Have you torn off the back page of the May Flyer and stuck it to your fridge? All the local contacts are there. The contact list will be updated and printed again in the August Flyer. Some changes to note for now:

Preb Jan Knott’s phone number is 479311.

LIz Bence’s (Floral Art) email address is [email protected].

Christina Creese 750826 is taking over from Maureen Fletcher as a Good Neigh-bour contact.

Memorial Hall bookings should be through Sally Davis 472356 for now.

I would like to thank the not-for-profit advertisers who are slowly coming on board and who understand the need for these very cheap advertisements to help keep the Farmborough Flyer going. And we could not do without the donations that continue to come in. Thank you all.

Another thank you I would like to make is to the Parish Council who covered the printing of our New-Look Farmborough Flyer for the first three months to help us get going. Thank you.

Presently with advertising revenue and donations we will be able to print 12-page, monthly Flyers until the end of the year. We are just covering costs, so please do keep the donations and adverts coming. We don’t want to flood our publi-cation with adverts, so we are talking se-lected advertising. Small businesses that can assist our community in some way are the target market. Let’s hear from you! Prices charged are in this edition.

We print 600 Flyers every month and these are distributed to every household in Farmborough and others are left in prominent places for anybody to pick up and take home (the Hall, hairdresser, Timsbury businesses, etc.).

And please remember to keep informing the Editor of any events in and around Farmborough at 01762 753189 or [email protected] . Without local contributions, there will be no Farmborough Flyer!

Is Summer on its way? Enjoy the G&T in the garden!

Thoughts from the Rectory

You may well recall the phrase: 'The best laid plans of mice and men'…. How true is that! It's my day off and I had planned to go, with the husband, to B&Q to buy some new doors. (We certainly know how to live!) Actually, though, we'd thought to combine it with a bite to eat, so not quite so bad. Then came a phone call…..and it is all change.

This got me thinking and I suddenly re-called Tolstoy's story, 'The Two Pilgrims'. Two Russian men set out to go to Jerusa-lem for the great Easter Festival. This is something that would be awe-inspiring and spiritually uplifting. A trip of a life-time.

One is single minded. He will stop for nothing and his eyes are firmly fixed on the journey's end. The other, as he jour-neys on, encounters people needing help everywhere he goes. He spends so much time and, indeed money, that he never reaches the Holy City. However, some-thing comes to this man which the other totally misses. Something comes through him into the lives of many people which the other fails to find in any of the splen-did, great Easter Celebrations. God's pres-ence and good grace is at work in the one who let his plans go and served the needs of others.

A few days ago, a young woman, in a place not far from here, slipped and fell down. Her head began to bleed, no doubt she was disorientated. People walked on by leaving her on the ground. Eventually, thank goodness, someone went to her aid.

What, I wonder, would you have done?

Jesus tells us that whenever we meet the needs of another person it is as if we are doing it to him.

Ah well, I don't suppose B&Q is going any-where and surely they won't run out of doors?

With love & blessing

Jan Knott

LEAF Open Farm Sunday, is one of the farming industry’s biggest success stories. Since 2006, over 1000 farmers across the UK have opened their gates and wel-comed people onto their farm for one Sun-day each year. It is a fantastic opportunity for everyone, young and old, to discover at first hand what it means to be a farmer and the fabulous work they do producing our food and managing the countryside.

The Farmborough Community Shop

Congratulations to Christopher Bullock, who has been ap-pointed as the shop Manager. Here is an open letter from him to you.

‘As the incoming manager of your new community shop in Farmborough I would like to say how excited I am about this op-portunity for the village. My wife and I have lived in Farrington Gurney for the last three years and keenly appreciate the need for local conveniences in villages such as ours.

My most recent positions include over-seeing the Jane Austen Centre gift shop and tea room as well as managing super-markets, so I aim to bring the experiences learned in those roles to this new venture.

I hope together we can fulfil the potential of this fantastic opportunity to bring a much-needed shop to Farmborough, which will sell all of your essential items as well as locally sourced meat and produce.

I am also looking forward to the potential of the coffee shop serving as a meeting place for the local community in which we will be selling a variety of drinks and home-made cakes.

I look forward to meeting many of you in our shop and coffee shop in the weeks ahead.

Yours, Christopher Bullock’

Princess Meghan? No. According to Royal protocol, the new Duchess of Sussex, will never be called Princess Meghan. The title of Princess can only be bestowed upon persons of royal blood.

Her official title is Her Royal Highness Prin-cess Henry of Wales, taken from her hus-band's name. When Meghan is not with Harry, she will revert to being called the Duchess of Sussex.

So why Princess Diana then? This title was something that became media and gen-eral public use. It was never official. She was officially Diana, Princess of Wales (after her divorce from Prince Charles).

Harry and Meghan’s children will have royal blood, so will be called Prince and Princess followed by their first name.

Memorial Hall Anniversary Lunch

The recent Hall lunch, postponed from March due to snow, was held on the hottest day of the year (at least until then)

on 6 May at the Memorial Hall. This annu-al gathering celebrates the anniversary of the opening of the Hall 52 years ago.

The lunch was a superb carvery, a choice of puddings and cheese and biscuits, fol-lowed by coffee and mints. Feedback was so positive we will look to repeat this for future lunches.

A huge thank you to everybody supported the event and special thanks to Sally Wildman for suggesting a carvery and for all her organising on the day.

A raffle and licensed bar helped contribute to the £505 which was raised for Hall funds. This is being put towards the refurbishment of the bar area.

The next Hall event is the Craft Fayre in October, so look out for information about this in the near future.

Bath & North East Somerset Council News

• The West of England Joint Committee has approved almost £1.5m funding for two major projects designed to improve road infrastructure and support economic growth in Bath and North East Somerset.

The junction at the Marksbury Co-op is one. The Committee agreed to contribute £700,000 through the LEP’s Local Growth Fund for improvements to the A39 Bences Garage Junction. The project aims to ease congestion and enhance the functioning of the highway network by improving the current pinch point at the A39 junction with the A368 Marksbury Road. The im-provement scheme will add capacity to the junction by providing an additional lane for vehicles on the southbound approach and will build on the improvement work re-cently completed at the Three Headed Man Junction on the A39, which was again supported via the LGF.

• B&NES Council are asking for the views of residents of Bath on their plans to help Bath City Centre BREATHE cleaner air. If you work in central Bath, you might want to give your views on these plans. See link: https://youtu.be/JlFf1pCLNJQ

Police News

The National Fraud Intelli-gence Bureau (NFIB) have noticed an increase in Action

Fraud reports where fraudsters are offer-ing a discount on Television service provid-er subscriptions. Fraudsters are cold-calling victims, purporting to be from a Television (TV) provider offering a discount on their monthly subscription. Victims have been told their subscription needs to be re-newed, or that part, or all, of the TV equip-ment has expired and they are due an up-grade on the equipment/subscription. In order to falsely process the discount, the fraudster asks victims to confirm or pro-vide their bank account details. The scam-mers may also request the victim’s identifi-cation documents, such as scanned copies of passports.

The following telephone numbers are used “08447111444”, “02035190197” and “08001514141”. The callers voices report-edly sound feminine with an Asian accent.

Victims later make enquiries and discover their TV service provider did not call them and that the fraudster has made transac-tions on the victim’s bank account.

Since the beginning of this year there have been 300 Action Fraud Reports nationwide relating to this fraud. Victims aged over 66 seem to be the most targeted.

• Don’t assume a phone call or email is authentic just because they know your name and other personal details • Don’t be rushed or pressured into making a decision • Don’t hesitate to question uninvited approaches in case it’s a scam. • Stay in control: have the confidence to refuse unusual requests for personal or financial information

SCHOOL ASSOCIATION

SUMMER FAYRE Friday 22nd June

This year, instead of a May Fayre, The Farmborough Primary School will be hold-ing a Summer Fayre on Friday 22nd of June after school.

Please put the date in your diaries and come along for loads of fun and to help raise extra funds for the school.

Bank Holiday Scout Jamboree

Wansdyke District Scouts held an amazing jamboree at Fry's from the 25th – 27th May. 600 plus people were registered with Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from all round High Littleton attending. The theme of the camp was films. High Littleton were Westerns. Great fun was had by all.

High Littleton is the name of our scout group . We have 3 sections beavers (6-8 ) Cubs (8-10 and a half) and scouts (from 10 and a half) all sections are part of the whole of High Littleton Scout Group and all contain girls.

We are always looking for young people to take over the main roles as a leader. If people fail to come forward then small-er groups like High Littleton will fold, de-priving the young boys and girls of the fun of camping, cooking on open fires, hiking, abseiling, caving, etc. We try to make the programme we provide as interesting as possible and we have many young people who go on to be young leaders.

All through this term the young people

will be out and about doing many inter-esting activities. We like to put the out in scouting

Any boys and girls wishing to join us will be welcomed, as will anyone who would like to become a leader.

Please contact Wendy Sherborne at [email protected] for more info.

Did you know……

Experts are saying that there has been an increase in the number of children with leukaemia. They believe that babies who are not exposed to germs at a young age are more likely to develop leukaemia as children.

Did you know …..

The RSPCA receives the equivalent of one call per hour about dogs trapped in hot cars. Dogs can die in hot cars! Even if left only for a short while.

If you believe that a dog is in danger, call 999 rather than the RSPCA.

If you break the car window, be aware that you can be charged with criminal damage.

Please don’t ever leave a dog in a hot car, even with the win-dows down a tad!

Talent and Trading Scheme

Our group organised a sponsored 7-mile walk on Saturday 21st May in order to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

The walk began at Betty Baker’s house in Farmborough, went towards Priston and Marksbury and finished back in Farmbor-ough at Betty’s House. The seven walkers, who included 2 very young children (and a pushchair!), were met by friends there, many from CAMEO, who had organised a wonderful spread of food and drinks. Many thanks to Betty Baker, Anita Eatherden, Cheri Langley and Gill Hayden.

An amazing amount of money was raised for Cancer Research UK - £1,178.00!

So, a very big thank you to everyone who, not only took part in the walk and

gathered sponsors (Pat Tiley, Ros Hulcoop, Ruth Sextion, Brenda Mountain, Josie Je-rome, Be Wright, and Lotus – Nicolette Robson’s daughter-in-law, with her two young children, Oliver and Arabella), but also to those who kindly sponsored the walkers and to those who supported the event in any way. Thank you! Be Wright

Farmborough Women’s CAMEO

Last month, Mel Wittmaack encouraged CAMEO members to get moving with the philosophy ‘Move it or Lose it!’

Mel emphasised the importance of keep-ing fit to ensure the health of our heart, lungs, joints and muscles. As we age it is vital to keep muscles strong which will help with balance, stabilise joints and maintain flexibility. Keeping flexible will ensure that everyday activities such as bending down to do up shoes, or reaching items from a high shelf will be much easier to achieve. Keeping thigh muscles strong will help with getting out of the bath, or going up stairs, whilst hand and wrist exer-cises will assist with opening jars or doors.

After a demonstration on how exercises can be carried out whilst seated, CAMEO members then put into practise some of the moves described by Mel.

After the break, the ‘Handbag Game’ was played which resulted in much laughter and friendly competitiveness as the ladies rushed to find the items requested in their own handbags. ‘What a lot we carry around with us’ was the general opinion!

Forthcoming events: 5th June - Belly dancing 3rd July - American Supper and Quiz

National and World Days in June

There seems to be a ‘Day’ for everything these days .. from a World Gin Day to a National Fudge Day! I like those two! I’ve selected a few International ones coming up in June that might be of interest:

1st—International Children’s Day

9th—World Gin Day

14th—World Blood Donor Day

15th—World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (sad that such abuse exists)

16th—World Surfing Day

17th—World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (is Deserti-fication a word?)

21st—World Music Day

21st— Global Motor Neurone Disease Awareness Day

Did you know…..?

that nearly 50% or our global coral reefs are dead.. caused by warming waters, overfishing and pollution? Scientists have predicted that 90% of coral reefs around the world will have died by 2050. We are in danger of a huge environmental disaster that little is known and talked about.

Coral reefs produce some of the oxygen we breathe. Often described as underwa-ter rainforests, they populate a tiny frac-tion of the ocean but provide habitats for one in four marine species. Reefs also form crucial barriers protecting coastlines from the full force of storms.

There is hope. Scientists all over the world are ‘growing’ specific, hardy coral species that replicate 10 times faster than normal. They place pieces of these on bleached coral and are restoring the reefs. This will take years. It is an uphill battle and will rely on a change in human behaviour.
