Grandparent’s Day More than 100 grandparents graced our school for a wonderful Grandparent’s Day this term. Everyone involved was thrilled to have the opportunity to share a morning together and watch the students shine. The day started off with a wonderful performance from the Junior Strings to greet our visitors, and was followed by different activities in our classrooms. Activities included biscuit decoration, crafts such as the creation of hand puppets, reading, games and many more. The students all had the opportunity to have their photographs taken with their grandparents in their classrooms, and family photographs were taken as well. It was lovely to see the smiles on the faces of children and grandparents alike. Our visiting grandparents clearly loved the chance to see the school, their grandchildren and the classrooms. One could say that our classroom activities truly brought out the child in them as well! The day concluded with a lovely morning tea for our guests and a short presentation from Brian Andrew, author of I Grow in Grandad’s Garden, and his wife Moira. Thank you to all our grandparents for making our students’ day memorable and to all of our parents who assisted in making this day happen. Our College continues to grow from strength to strength as we break new ground together with our Lord reigning over our site Godrsquos Word directs that where there is unity Godrsquos people command a blessing

It has been an intentional strategy of the Life Church Oversight College Board CMT

and staff to ensure that they are focused and established for the Lordrsquos glory I have been delighted to see this leadership set a strong platform of faith love and hope so that they can establish more dynamic teams across the entire College

There are many examples where the College community is breaking new ground together enabling all our children to reach greater heights

The introduction of our new RoleM Math program has been outstanding at raising studentsrsquo outcomes Parents have generously given hundreds of hours in producing the new resources and the students have actively and enthusiastically participated in their lessons

The further development of our Secondary Leadership Team under Mr Eggins and the Primary Leadership Team under Mrs Tanzer has increased professional conversations The Teaching and Learning Committee has produced a deeper commitment to introduce proven best practice methods into our College We are stronger because we are working together in one accord

As a College we appreciate constructive feedback We acknowledge that this is another healthy sign ndash that when we are all looking for ways to make Brisbane Christian College a more Christ-centred community then mighty things can and will happen Thank you to every parent who has shared ideas and suggestions which have helped us improve our community this year

As you read about your children staff and community in this edition of The Flame may you catch the heart of your College which is to see every child break new ground supported and loved by the Brisbane Christian College Team

Philippians 312-14 (NKJV) Pressing Toward the Goal Not that I have already attained or am already perfected but I press on that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me Brethren I

do not count myself to have apprehended but one thing I do forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus

Paul had a rich past he had a good pedigree he was a Hebrew of Hebrews but he also had some seasons he was now ashamed of Saul as Paul was known before his conversion had persecuted the church in the name of God however by the time he wrote the Letter to the Philippians he had established many churches and taken the Gospel to a new non-Jewish audience Paul determines to look forward not back We cannot drive a car forward while only looking back The rear view mirror will not inform us about the road ahead or the obstacle in our path

As followers of Jesus we need to constantly reflect on and celebrate the faithfulness of God that we have seen in our lives Psalms 103 reminds us to forget none of His benefits Yet growth change and vision require that while we celebrate Godrsquos faithfulness in the past we are looking forward to all He has for us in the future

Godrsquos faithful leading has positioned your family today for purpose and opportunity

As I look at a child I am always caught wondering about Godrsquos plan purpose and potential that rests on that life As Godrsquos kids we must never lose sense of opportunity and expectation God wants to be constantly doing a new thing in our lives Our relationship with Him must be marked by a sense of wonder and call Let us always ask Where has God called me to shine His light and promise today What am I learning What attitude or brokenness am I leaving in my past as I walk on in His love

Remember Ephesians 320 (NKJV) Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us

Ready Steady GoWe didnrsquot think it could happen two years in a row but it did The annual Fun Run was again rained out not once but twice Some suggested that we should consider staging the Fun Run somewhere in Outback Queensland to help break the drought Finally when the event was staged it was another successful Brisbane Christian College Fun Run There was much anticipation with all three Houses looking to take out the day It is the favourite carnival of both teachers and students as it is the only event where all the College students are gathered together It is difficult to determine who enjoys the Prep and Year 1 races more the littlies themselves or the Senior students who run with them

The students put in a great effort on the day and the weather was perfect Congratulations to Pascal House for winning the competition Thank you also to Mr Allen-Ankins and all the teachers and support staff for their organisational efforts

College Athletics CarnivalOn our annual Athletics Carnival morning a little initial light rain didnrsquot deter many of our younger students who volunteered to set up the dayrsquos events at Queensland State Athletics Centre (QSAC) at Nathan It is encouraging to know that there is an attitude of wanting to help and get involved even in our younger students

The first event of the day saw records demolished as a number of students broke the old mark Students from Year 4 and older were keen to showcase their athletic abilities and there was an atmosphere of strong competitiveness among students Brisbane Christian College will definitely be able to send a strong team to District level this year

Throughout the day competition was tough and all three Houses stayed in the running to win the day It was only at the very end that Livingstone was crowned as the 2014 Athletics Carnival winner It was a great day to be part of and it is with great anticipation that we look forward to next yearrsquos Athletics Carnival

Primary District Cross CountryThe Sunnybank District Primary Cross Country carnival was once again held at Col Bennett Park in Algester on Friday 9 May After the original event had been postponed due to wet weather it was a warm sunny day which was well suited to long distance running Due to the College Fun Run interruptions the College team was smaller in size than it had been previously

Each of the competitors tried their very best against some impressive competition and very large race numbers of up to 110 participants per race Hamish Mapp ran a magnificent and consistent race to overtake a handful of other runners in the last 300m to capture 8th place and a reserve position for the Sunnybank District team to attend the regional carnival Ethan Clinckett Amy Ike Reneacutee Ike and Alani Robertson all finished inside the top twenty for their respective races

Well done to each of the runners for their effort and exemplary representation at the carnival We look forward to improving our overall score with a larger team at the carnival next year

Mr Matthias Allen-Ankins Sports Coordinator

The Collegersquos largest ever team of ninety athletes ventured out to Limestone Park in Ipswich to contest the Christian Schools combined Primary and Secondary Cross Country event On a very warm autumn day it was important that students kept their hydration up for their races

Some gutsy performances were given by many students with the course including a couple of excruciating hills to get through Daniel Blest (12th) Tate Blyde (13th) Theo Ashton (15th) Lewis Gebbett (16th) Ruby Rough (14th) Ethan Clinckett (18th) and Amy Ike (17th) all deserve honourable mentions for their achievements in large fields of up to ninety competitors

On the back of these individual performances and a great all-round team effort the Primary students received 3rd place for overall points within B Division schools while the Secondary team attained 3rd in percentage points and were the Champion School for the B Division overall points Congratulations on an outstanding result that we hope to defend at next yearrsquos carnival

A big thankyou to our Cross Country coach Mr Pasa Alyuz for preparing the team and assisting on the day as well as to Miss Vanessa Nicholas and Mr Richard Proctor whose assistance was invaluable

College Tennis ChampionshipsOn Saturday 3 May our annual College Tennis Championships were held at the College and St Pius X courts It was a very successful day for all competitors

As the Collegersquos tennis coach I along with Mr Matt Allen-Ankins was very impressed with the levels of tennis and sportsmanship displayed in both the Senior and Junior levels It is exciting to see the growing interest in the great sport of tennis within the school

In the Junior competition defending champion Josef Zelinski (Pascal) went down fighting hard with Jordan Shaw (Livingstone) performing very well on the day to win 7-1

In the Senior competition defending champion Indiah Collings was unable to hold her title with Thomas Kerr (Livingstone) winning overall with a 6-2 win over Joshua Abraham (Livingstone)

Congratulations again to all the students Thank you to the parents and a special thanks to Mr Allen-Ankins and John and Angela Zelinski from ZTennis for sponsoring the event and providing the sausage sizzle for the day

The Battle on the Beach Series was held at the Sandstorm club comprising Touch Football Soccer and Volleyball over consecutive Wednesdays The quality of the Sandstorm competition further increased this year with new schools entering nominations

Our College had great success at the opening Soccer competition with the Open Boys Open Girls and U15 Girls winning their respective divisions and the U15 Boys finishing as runners-up Special mention goes to Paris Collings and Madison Stevenson from Year 6 who completed our U15 team that went on to win in an outstanding effort

The Touch and Volleyball competitions were very closely fought between numerous schools In each of the competitions some Open teams were narrowly beaten out for positions in semi-finals based on points count-back after finishing even on the ladder

A large number of students competed throughout the series which does not conclude until the Term 4 competition After being the overall champion school across all sports we look forward to trying to defend our title later in the year Thank you to Mr Gerrie Labuschagne and Mr Tony Asquith for assisting at some events

On Tuesday 29 April the boysrsquo AFL team took part in Division 3 of the Brisbane Lions Cup As a Senior it was really good to see the younger students of the College participating to the best of their ability against an overwhelming opponent The team was persistent in their efforts throughout the carnival A special mention is given to Lewis Gebbett and Matthew Rehder as their efforts were unmatched and their performance commanded well-deserved congratulations

As the lone Christian School participating in the competition Brisbane Christian College led by example with a team prayer conducted before the games and everyone represented the community admirably I enjoyed watching the team grow with each other in Christ

Mr Luke Copeland and Mr Matt Allen-Ankins must be commended and thanked for the coaching of the team Mr Copeland volunteered his precious time to train a bunch of inexperienced AFL lsquostarsrsquo and a pack of success-hungry hyenas emerged as a result

Vice-captain Theodore Ashton was motivational on and off the field He kept the team ready and eager to play and really stepped up The day was a huge success and the team should be commended for their tenacious efforts

We look forward to building upon the experience next year

Year 56 CampAnticipation Excitement Apprehension Just three emotions that we teachers experienced in the run up to the Year 56 camp

The students however embraced the opportunity for fun and learning new skills in a different environment We set off down to CYC Burleigh on Wednesday 30 April and following arrival lunch and safety briefings the students got out onto the water Each group took part in four activities on rotation through the following couple of days ndash stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) raft building and tubing in the beautiful surroundings of Tallebudgera Creek and surfing off the beach nearby

The Wednesday evening activities and team games caused quite a hullabaloo of excitement and hilarity with great leadership from the CYC team An eventful night gave way to a 600am walk along the beach Watching the progress of the sun as it rose and the mist over the water was spectacular even if most of the students would have rather been in bed

With devotions from Chaplain Jasmine Mrs Tanzer and Mr Morrison students were reminded of the potential each of them possess for achieving great things ndash for God as well as in their emotional and academic development

The camp was a wonderful opportunity for the students to build their friendships and learn to work cooperatively in teams They encouraged each other to go outside their comfort zones and try new things As a result a great time was had by all

Primary ANZAC ServiceOn Wednesday 24 April the Lower Primary School commemorated ANZAC Day by holding a special Chapel service This year we had the help of Sgt Vashti Wadwell mother of two of our students to put together our program so that it was meaningful and true to convention Our students enjoyed this special event listening intently and remaining quiet when required to do so

Our service included the address by Sgt Wadwell from the Australian Army and the special ceremony the Passing of the Spirit by our honoured guests from the Sunnybank RSL Mr Harry Classan and Mr Ron Cruickshank The Passing of the Spirit ceremony involved our Primary School Captains receiving a flag and a poppy from our visitors symbolising the younger generation taking on the responsibility of keeping the ANZAC Spirit alive

During the service students from each class were invited to pin a poppy onto the wreath Poppies symbolise remembrance while sprigs of rosemary symbolise fidelity (being faithful or loyal) and remembrance Laurel was also used to remember those who were brave

We are very grateful that the ANZACs and the soldiers fought in the wars so our country could be kept safe

In 2013 a number of students asked if we can match what some of our larger college counterparts undertake for their musical productions I wanted to inspire their talent and so I began to investigate a series of school productions locally and beyond The decision was boldly made to not just copy the quality of what other schools had achieved but to do our next production better And so Brisbane Christian Collegersquos grand three-night production of Disneyrsquos Beauty and the Beast JR was born

Once the production itself was chosen the vision began This very quickly became about the costumes stage and dances Mrs Mikhail volunteered to be challenged in the realm of costume making Mr Lloyd and Mr Eggins were equal to the demands of a director requesting a revolving stage with reversible wings

while the marvelous Mrs Jones was asked to paint in excess of fifty metres of calico to look like a castle a village inside a castle a forest and a tavern Finally dance teachers a variety of students and You Tube became our choreographers

The support of parents students teachers support staff and student teachers added to the community effort that produced a magnificent show The feedback has been that this yearrsquos production was the most polished production wersquove done and for some members of our College community it was the best school production they have ever seen I thank God for the many talents and gifts with which He has blessed our community

The Qualifying Camp for the Duke of Edinburgh program in 2014 was another much loved successful excursion to Girraween National Park For the first time numbers were capped at sixty students to make the camp more logistically achievable The Outdoor Education Program has come a long way from the humble beginnings of three students and four teachers We are now in the position of filling a camp in only three days Students were taken by Mrs Leslie Ninness to new and interesting areas like The Cascades Many students successfully climbed the Pyramids and many made it up Running Up Rock for the first time Mr Hooker took an intrepid group out for an overnight walk This

group decided to walk the five kilometres to Mt Norman on the first day On their second day they climbed Mt Norman and then walked most of the day to a second yet unnamed summit and climbed this The students decided to name this Mt Harvey Over two days Mr Hookerrsquos twenty students walked about nineteen kilometres and climbed about 2370 metres in the two climbs The camp was another great success and a great effort from the students thanks to the teachers and volunteers who led the students for the weekend

Since I was a child I have always wanted to work as a service cashier in a supermarket Growing up I wanted to be someone who got to press fancy buttons and stack groceries into bags Coming into Year 11 I was offered the chance to participate in the Pathway of Excellence Apprenticeships Program I decided to take up the opportunity so I could get closer to my goal After making a few phone calls and sending some emails to gain a work experience placement I was able to get two weeksrsquo work at Woolworths This was the opportunity I had been waiting for and it didnrsquot matter that I wasnrsquot getting paid I was able to gain experience behind a supermarket checkout and I loved it

After completing a work experience placement at Woolworths I decided that this was where I wanted to work However my final week ended and I was discouraged that they could not offer me a Traineeship I talked to Mr Lloyd about possible ways I could get a job while still completing my schooling I went and had a few meetings with the company manager of Woolworths and was given a job I now work as a casual employee and love working with people talking to customers and making their day better with a smile Being part of the Pathway of Excellence Apprenticeships program has allowed me to achieve what I could not have elsewhere

Pathway of Excellence Apprenticeships

After graduating many many years ago from university Secondary teachers found themselves escorting Years 7 to 9 extension students back through the famous courtyards of Queensland University of Technology (QUT) at the beginning of Term 2 This initial start to the term allowed students to not only get a sense of the life of a tertiary student but provided an invaluable and lasting impression of future possibilities and prospects that await them

The two-day interactive program provided our students with various experiences ranging from challenges that involved building the tallest spaghetti tower to making a water filtration system comprised of everyday material that was fit for implementation in third world countries or coming up with innovative engineered solutions to current dilemmas affecting East Timor Leste Brilliant solutions were meticulously thought through and presented to the group

The winning presentation suggested recycling plastic bottles to address litter by cutting them into food containers floating rice farms to prevent flooding during monsoon seasons and using horses and carts donated by Australia to overcome transportation challenges

Not only were academic collaborations formed but emerging engineers were born Such was the experience at QUT that even teachers were left with the unusual yearning to study more

Ground for planting is broken from large clods into smaller and smaller workable pieces This demanding task welcomes team work and time with the reward being a good harvest In a school setting the harvest is our studentsrsquo achievements

Our teachersrsquo desire is to see our students achieving higher levels than

in previous years growing in confidence or mastering something that has not been achieved before It is these achievements that give our teachers great satisfaction and therefore the desire to put in the hard work of lsquopreparing the ground wellrsquo

In our Primary School this year we have been breaking ground that was first tilled last year but now is being broken into smaller more workable pieces The setting of clear learning goals and closely tracking student progress was a focus at the beginning of the year Now this ground is being further worked this term in our weekly staff meetings Mrs Kopittke our Upper Primary Coordinator and Mrs Juillard our Lower Primary Coordinator have teamed up to help our teachers to become more skilled at setting learning goals and tracking student results As this ground is reworked a greater depth of understanding is being achieved bringing further improved student results

The Brisbane City Councilrsquos Active School Travel program was introduced into our school this year This program is not new to our city but it is new to our school Our families have taken hold of this program with enthusiasm with more than half of our students actively traveling each Tuesday Our winning Primary School class to date regularly has over 90 of its students actively traveling This is new ground for our College and it is hoped that over time this program will be further developed to alleviate traffic congestion around our College and add to the overall health of our students

Mrs Laraine Tanzer Head of Primary School

Equipping to AchieveBrisbane Christian College is moving into a new era of academic nurturing As a staff we are all constantly looking for ways to improve the continual approach to learning and curriculum

It has been so rewarding to work closely with the Year 11 and 12 students during the Tertiary Studies subject as they plan for their futures Likewise Nathan Cox and Gerrie Labuschagne are spending valuable time with the Year 910 and Year 78 cohorts ensuring a seamless

progression for students through the Secondary School Students are receiving feedback from their Heads of House on their results from Term 1 In addition teachers have been conducting case meetings for students deemed to be in extra need of support The whole purpose of these meetings is to devise strategies to assist in improving academic skills such as time management We are aiming to identify issues that may be stifling a studentrsquos progress and collaboratively addressing them as soon as possible

Our team focus is evident with the talents of teachers Christine Thomas and Sharlyn Folkes both in curriculum monitoring roles We are able to offer a new level of feedback to students across all subjects in the Secondary School like never before Our focus on academic differentiation is giving our Secondary staff even more opportunities to offer a curriculum bespoke in nature

The Collegersquos involvement with universities has increased giving our students a taste of university life and what to expect after leaving school This initiative is also giving students the skills to not only gain acceptance into university but staying and thriving in their new environment

I am encouraged that more and more students are embracing our lunchtime tutoring sessions Our record attendance rates are assisting our students in reaching their academic goals It also shows a maturity in our students each of whom are developing a greater understanding of the importance of the tutoring process and its benefits

Heads of HouseAs I sit and reflect at the halfway point of this term I am astounded by what we as a College have achieved and what is left still to come After two false starts the College Fun Run was run and won by a very deserving Pascal (not that I am biased at all) Our Years 7-9 extension

and Years 11 amp 12 students have had a taste of university through QUTrsquos STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) programs Years 5 amp 6 have enjoyed a three-day camp with some students and parents being separated for the first time

The list of activities goes on and on though the reports come back the same as a College we are so proud of how our students represent themselves their College their families and our God Time after time we hear praise from the people who run these activities drive the buses or just happen to come across our students enjoying some of the activities planned by our staff

The College is abuzz with excitement at the upcoming musical I am sure once again students will be left stronger from their experiences take amazing memories and develop even stronger friendships as they continue to involve themselves fully in the life of the College I look forward to hearing stories in the future of our graduates making a difference in their chosen careers putting their best foot forward continuing to earn the praise of those around them and continuing to honour Christ in all they do

Mr Nathan CoxHead of House ndash Pascal

The evening also consisted of a sausage sizzle a light supper trivia games and much more To sum it up the evening was definitely a night full of entertainment and laughter It was an evening of great success and would not have taken place without the support of the teachers students and everyone else who contributed their time and efforts to help make the night successful

ChaplaincyI am so eager to announce some exciting things that are happening in the life of our incredible College

For the first time we have started an Upper Primary Chapel team This team gets together once a week to practice songs to help lead at the Upper Primary Chapel The students involved are passionate about worshipping Jesus and want to be a part of helping their peers connect with Him too

Shine Girl (a personal development program focusing on young girlsrsquo strength worth and purpose) is well underway with our current Year 10 girls Mrs Henry (College Counsellor) and I are very excited and expectant to see what great things will unfold from the time that we get to spend together finding out about our strength worth and purpose that is found in Jesus

Also starting this term for the first time in our College is the Strength Program being run with our Year 10 boys This program is designed for each boy to develop understanding of his personal identity purpose and direction for his life

I know that God is doing something new at Brisbane Christian College amongst our students and we are excited to be lsquoBreaking New Groundrsquo together

It is now my great privilege to serve the College Community as Chairperson along with an Executive committee of Mrs Kay Bryce Mrs Ludmyla Serdiuk Mr Andrew Kemp Mrs Jasmine Higgins Mrs Danielle Browning and Mrs Megan MacPherson

When a building is to be built the first thing usually done is the ground is broken to establish sure and strong foundations which are then able to hold steady the building placed upon them We are constantly seeing our College grow in many different areas and it would be my prayer that over the next little while parents can come together and begin to work together to build a good foundation of community encouragement and support to see with Godrsquos blessing what can be built in our College community I look forward to working with you all to bless our children teachers staff and each other God Bless

Mrs Glennys LeesonCollege Connect Chairperson

In March a team from Life Church went to visit our two Compassion Church Partnerships in Indonesia This was an incredible experience for the team as they saw the impact Compassion child sponsorship has on not just families but whole communities We built great relationships with the leadership of the churches that run the Compassion child development centres and were inspired by their faith and heart to reach their community

On the trip we had the opportunity to meet our sponsor children and families in their homes It was confronting to witness such poverty but also encouraging seeing and hearing the difference our sponsorship is making in particular through our prayers and letters

Compassion and Life Church Partnership Trip

Farewell StephIt is with sadness and excitement that we say farewell to our much-loved Student Services and First Aid Officer who with her husband David is relocating to Mackay David and Steph are taking up the positions of Youth Pastors at ROL Community Church We celebrate this new chapter in their lives with them and wish them all the best

Page 2: The FAME · 2017-05-15 · the Goal: Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold

Please be aware that Tennis lessons and the new gameplay Friday afternoon sessions have begun for all ages For more information contact ZTennis on 0407 967 187 or Jzelinskilivecom See you on the court

Equipping to Achieve Motherrsquos Day StallMay is the month where we honour our mothers so on Wednesday 7 May eleven College mums came together to serve the children of the College at the annual Motherrsquos Day stall There were notepads for shopping whistles torches soaps and sponges shopping bags cards and photos in frames Tables were laid and the children came with their envelopes and bags clanging with change (some were not so noisy for there were only notes) The children left with smiles on their faces very proud of the purchases they had made

Mums we hope that you had smiles on your faces when Sunday morning came and you were presented with the treasures that had been selected We must say a very big thankyou to Linda Wallis who organised the stall and to all the other mothers who lent their time to wrap the gifts and then sell them A great time was had by all

This term the Year 12 cohort once again organised a remarkable event to fundraise for our end-of-year proceedings along with the help of many teachers and staff members The inaugural Variety Evening was an incredible night that had parents and teachers up on their feet bopping and twirling on the dazzling dance floor

Mr Eggins and the rest of the bandrsquos performance entertained the audience throughout the entire night with their upbeat music and ridiculously funny mullets Mrs Jones had painted a beautiful art piece throughout the event which was auctioned off towards the end of the night Mr Alyuz who was also the host performed some mind-blowing illusion tricks that left many of the audience startled and confused

AlumniSo much has happened since my time at Southside Christian College (Brisbane Christian College)

During the last year of College I was fortunate to gain work experience with a luxury car mechanical service and restoration company

After graduating this company offered me an apprenticeship I am about to enter my final year and then I will become a fully qualified Specialist Automotive Engineer

I have thoroughly enjoyed working on a variety of prestige and performance vehicles worth hundreds of thousands of dollars Some of my favourites include the 1972 Mercedes Grosser 600 Limo and the current top level AMG range

I also studied at TAFE to gain certified TIG MIG and stick welding and metal working qualifications and commenced my own restoration business called Kwik Kustoms

I still maintain close friendships with many of my old class mates and am actively involved with my local church

Jacqueline DunckerYear 11 Student

College ConnectIn March College Connect held its AGM and as part of the process Mrs Sharon Mahoney stood down as Chairperson after many years of service Thank you Mrs Mahoney for all you have given and we pray that you will be richly blessed in this new chapter of your life

College ConnectIn March College Connect held its AGM and as part of the process Mrs Sharon Mahoney stood down as Chairperson after many years of service Thank you Mrs Mahoney for all you have given and we pray that you will be richly blessed in this new chapter of your life
