As we continue to progress into this new school year, we hope to build on the many successes we have had across the District last year, while continuing to build toward our new goals. We continue to build on the success we developed through the use of instructional strategies that were implemented to keep our students engaged in their learning. We also introduced lessons designed to provide higher level thinking skills and writing across the curriculum. We will continue to use these strategies and expand upon them in this new year.

Education continues to change throughout our state, and in order to meet these new standards and assessments, our District has aligned our academic programs to the New York State Learning Standards. We continuously review our curriculum to ensure our instruction focuses on the skills and concepts needed to make our students successful. This has required professional development for our teachers and administrators as they work to provide the highest quality instructional program for our students.

This school year has also brought other changes. This includes the use of the i-Ready program as a new adaptive diagnostic tool. The i-Ready program provides both teacher-led and individualized online instruction that allows for a complete blended learning solution in ELA and Math, grades K-8. Through the use of i-Ready, we are able to provide individualized instruction and progress monitor each of our students. It also helps to assess an individual student’s skills across multiple grade levels while allowing students to work at their own pace and grade level.

We will continue to use pre-assessment exams designed to identify for teachers what concepts students are familiar with and what areas will need additional focus. Progress will continue to be measured at the end of the year by post-assessment tests, as well as the annual State and Regents Assessments. We have used the pre-assessment results to guide and direct instruction in order to assist us in continuing to improve student learning and growth.

Please take the time to view our Web site this year to see all of the new additions. We want the community to share in the school’s accomplishments and activities. You can find many pictures and news updates at the site. We continue to add highlights to the Web site each week.

On October 30, 2013, the Harlem Wizards took on the Fearless Falcons in an unforgettable basketball matchup. Amazing basketball talent, hilarious comedy, and wild dunks not seen in the NBA were performed, which created an exciting night for everyone. The Falconer gymnasium was filled to the brim with over 700 attendees. Members of the Falconer faculty, staff and students, as well as community members, volunteered to make this event a tremendous success. The profit that was generated from this event was $4,852! This game was held in order to raise funds for the Falconer PTO Playground campaign.

The annual ‘United Way’ Fund Drive was recently held at Falconer Central School in order to help to improve the lives of local children and their families. The Falconer District collected $3,564! These funds will be used to assist families in

their quest to achieve their human potential: education, income stability, and healthy lives. The overall mission of the United Way is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good.

Falconer Students Attend College Fairs

Falconer students recently took the Practice Scholastic Achievement Test (PSAT). The PSAT helps to prepare students for the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT). According to www.collegeboard.org the SAT is the nation’s most widely used college admission test. The SAT is the first step toward higher education for students of all backgrounds. It’s taken by more than two million students every year and is accepted by virtually all colleges and universities.

The annual JCC College and Career Night was held on October 22, 2013. More than 60 colleges and career representatives were represented at this college fair. The students who attended were able to speak with career representatives about their preferred career choice. They were able to then connect with the colleges that offered related career majors. It was also a great opportunity for those looking into JCC or the option of transferring elsewhere after attending. Falconer High School also hosted a College Fair in the Falconer Media Center. Falconer students have met with their Guidance Counselors to work on college applications, scholarship applications, and to arrange visitations to college and university campuses.

Sophomore, Mikaela Johnson, was honored with a scholarship to attend the Xavier and Tina Williams Summer Youth Business Academy hosted by Edinboro University. The Academy was developed to introduce young men and women to the field of business. Participating students engaged in problem-solving exercises, toured businesses, learned about economics and business plans, built leadership and teamwork skills. They also met with the School of Business faculty and regional business leaders in settings comparable to professional networking events. Mikaela was selected to participate based upon a nomination letter submitted by Mrs. Maryann Balling. She was one of 24 participants who represented 17 different high schools from Pennsylvania, New York, and Washington, DC. The participants worked in teams to create and present business plans for products that they had created. Mikaela’s team selected her as the Human Resource Manager & Communication Director. Her team product received the “Most Innovative Technology” award.

After earning top honors at the New York State Leadership Conference in April, the Falconer Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America earned the right to compete at the National FBLA Competition. FBLA-PBL members have the competitive edge, as the best and brightest of FBLA and PBL convene to compete in leadership events, share their successes, and learn new ideas about shaping their career future through workshops and exhibits. This four-day conference is considered the pinnacle of the FBLA-PBL experience. After months of fundraising, planning, and practicing, Madelaine Bartholomew, Mikaela Johnson and Sha’al Smith traveled to Anaheim, California, and presented their Community Service Project, “Sydney Kresconko Benefit Project.” Although they did not qualify for finals, they were proud of their accomplishments and valued the opportunity to represent Falconer FBLA.

Falconer Central School District has implemented a new progress monitoring system, called i-Ready Diagnostic and Instruction. This system focuses on reading and math.

i-Ready will assist teachers as they assess their students’ reading and math levels. Online lessons target students’ individual instruction levels. The assessment results will also be useful as a guide for teachers to organize targeted group lessons.

On September 27, 2013, Sam Kang, Danielle Melquist, Megan Neratko, Heather Soderburg, and Kim Youngberg, all students from the Jamestown Community College Occupational Therapy Assistant Program, visited HC Fenner Elementary School.

The group of OTA students presented to Mrs. VandeVelde’s 4th grade class to help promote backpack awareness in honor of National Backpack Awareness Day. The presentation was a brief educational session on proper packing and carrying techniques of backpacks to avoid future damage to the child’s back. The presentation included important information such as the following:• A child’s backpack should weigh no more than about 10 percent of his or her body weight. This means a student weighing 100 pounds shouldn’t wear a loaded school backpack heavier than about 10 pounds.• Load heaviest items closest to the child’s back (the back of the backpack).• Check what your child carries to school and brings home. Make sure the items are necessary for the day’s activities.• If the backpack is too heavy or tightly packed, your child can hand carry a book or other item outside the pack.• Adjust the shoulder straps so that the pack fits snugly on the child’s back. A pack that hangs loosely from the back can pull the child backwards and strain muscles. After the brief presentation the students participated in a backpack relay race where they had to follow the proper packing and carrying techniques to avoid disqualification during the race. The students were all very involved in the

activity and followed the proper techniques that they had learned from the presentation. Overall, the visit was a success in bringing backpack awareness to the 4th grade students.

National Backpack Awareness Day

i-Ready

The Temple AIS teachers hosted a Parent Night on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at 6 p.m. at Temple. Over thirty parents were in attendance. The Temple AIS teachers presented on the Common Core Learning Standards, iReady, and AIS at Temple. Donuts were donated by Falconer TOPS and cider was donated by Kennedy Shurfine.

i-Ready Diagnostic & Instruction tests are used to efficiently assess students across multiple grade levels, allowing for identification of root causes of students’ struggles or for identification of areas where a student is ready for further challenge. This information provides the teacher with a “road map” to instruction for remediation.

AIS Parent Night Fire Prevention at Temple

Temple Elementary School would like to thank members of the Falconer Fire Department and the Kennedy Fire Department for the fire prevention assemblies on Friday, October 18, 2013. A special thanks also goes out to a group of Junior firefighters from the Falconer Fire Department who participated during the assemblies. The students learned many important things. They watched a video on fire safety, had a visit from Sparky the Fire Dog, and were able to see fire vehicles up close. They also practiced “Stop, Cover, Drop & Roll.” We appreciate the volunteers’ hard work, time, and dedication for working with our students and keeping our communities safe!

Have you ever read a really good book and wanted to share it with someone? The staff at Fenner found a great program called Hot Reads. The title Hot Reads encourages readers to be excited and enthusiastic about reading. Outside of each classroom and office there is a special pocket where teachers and staff can put a picture of a book they would like to recommend to students to read. These books can be checked out from Fenner’s library, a local public library, or the teacher’s classroom library. The books range from engaging picture books to award winning chapter books. Book titles are changed monthly. Through this unique program, students at Fenner will be introduced to hundreds of new books this school year.

Kevin McCarthy performed for the students at Temple Elementary on Halloween. He is an experienced and seasoned entertainer when he plays acoustic guitar and sings. His crowd-pleasing show got everyone singing and dancing. Kevin played familiar songs as he talked with the students about important life lessons. His show was enjoyed by the students, parents, teachers and staff, and he left a lasting impression on everyone who attended.
