Welcome to The Fairway Network

Welcome to The Fairway Network ~ Chicagoland’s very own women’s golf organization for professional women of all golf skill levels (beginner, intermediate and advanced). The Fairway Network works year-round to help you make the most of a seasonal opportunity to golf. Whether you play to beat the field or beat your own best score, stay in shape or stay connected personally or professionally, TFN provides a resource and an outlet for women who play golf. TFN promotes women's access to golf, teaching new golfers the skills and the rules of the game and reinforcing proper golf etiquette for players of all abilities. TFN provides social and business benefits to its members, giving Chicagoland women an opportunity to network through golf. The 2010 TFN season kicked off on a snowy night with cocktails and conversation at the Vertigo Sky Lounge at the Dana Hotel. We talked about our careers, our winter travel (and our winter golf), and our yearning to swing a club as soon as the Windy City winter wonderland thaws and we return to our beloved home courses. Next we got our heads in the game with “Playing Between the Ears”, a pre-season tune-up focused on our mind spaces rather than our club faces. Now TFN greets golf season with a host of weekly leagues, single-day events and tournament play, offering its members new and old the best of golf in and around Chicago: terrific courses, fabulous foursomes, camaraderie and friendly competition. See you at the 19th hole! Meaghan Schneider TFN 2010 Chair

Frequently Asked Questions How do I sign up for an event or a league? Registration for all events and leagues opens at the Season Tee Off Event in May. Members present at the Tee Off have the first opportunity to register for events and leagues. Other members may register by mail or online via our website, ww.thefairwaynetwork.org.

Are there deadlines for signing up for events or leagues? The deadline is generally four weeks before the date of the event or the first date of the league. However, many of the weekend events and some of the leagues fill up quickly. Members are encouraged to sign up for the events at the beginning of the season to reserve their spots. How will my registration for an event or league be confirmed? At least one week before an event or the commencement of a league, you will receive an email confirming your participation and providing other relevant details (i.e. directions, format, foursome assignments). If you have questions about your registration, contact [email protected]. Are there waiting lists for events? You may email or call The Fairway Network to be put on a waiting list. If there is an opening in an event due to a cancellation, you will be notified either by email or phone. You can also contact the event captain listed in this handbook for more specific information regarding an event. I want to play with my friends when we sign up for an event. How can we be sure that we will be able to play together? The Fairway Network philosophy is to promote interaction and networking opportunities throughout its membership. As such, we encourage you to play with new people (and hopefully, develop new friendships). Foursomes will be determined at random prior to the date of the event.

What if I cannot attend an event for which I signed up? You may cancel your registration for an event by email or voice mail up to two weeks before an event and your registration fee will be refunded, less a $20 cancellation charge. If you cannot attend an event and it is within two weeks of the event (or even the day of the event) please notify TFN by email or voice mail. Registration fees are not refunded within the two weeks prior to the event. You can, however, send another TFN member in your

place and work out the payment reimbursement (if any) with her on an individual basis. How do I find out if there is an opening in an event or a league? If you are interested in attending an event, even if it is close to the date of the event, please email or call the TFN voice mail to inquire if there are openings or to be placed on a waiting list. Late sign ups can sometimes be accommodated. May only TFN members play in events or leagues? The Season Opener and the Season Closer are open to non-members. All other events are open only to TFN members, although each member may bring a guest to an event per our business cards (new members only, certain exceptions may apply, only valid once per person). Non-members, who are prospective members, may play at the four leagues as “walk ons,” subject to tee time availability, as a member’s guest, up to three times a season. What is the league “walk on” policy? Any TFN member may play any league at any time as a “walk on,” subject to available tee times and upon paying the applicable “walk on” fee to the league captain. Just show up! Openings in the reserved tee times are generally available. If I am a league participant and cannot play on a given Saturday or Sunday, what should I do? You may find a substitute TFN member from the Membership Directory or the league substitute list. Please notify the league captain if you have arranged for a substitute, or have the substitute notify the captain at the course. The league participant and the substitute may make their own reimbursement arrangements. What is the deadline for membership registration? The 2010 membership renewal fees are $100 for those who pay by May 31, 2010. New members receive a $25 credit towards a 2010 league or event. Membership rates increase to $125 if paid after May 31, 2010.

What if I have more questions? Please call 815.462.1393 or send an email to [email protected].

Chicago - The Sweet Spot One could argue that the golf season in and around the Windy City is about as short as the Cubs World Series history. Yet, Forbes Traveler lists Chicago #1 in its list of Top Golf Cities in America. Golf Digest's latest rating of the top 25 courses in Illinois includes 12 public courses. Now that the days are getting noticeably longer and the daily high temperatures are rising, thoughts start turning toward finding places to get back into the swing of the game we love. Check out this year's lineup.

Season Opener: Oak Brook Pine Meadow Wilmette ThunderHawk Ravisloe Coyote Run

Season Closer: George Dunne National 2010 Fall Classic Tournament Weekend: Fox Lake Country Club So dust off those clubs and meet me on the first tee. FORE! Lori Lynch TFN Events Committee Chair

Handicap Services Cost for TFN Service: $30 The Fairway Network has contracted with the Chicago District Golf Association (CDGA) to maintain our members’ handicaps. What is a Handicap?

Handicapping is a system that rates the relative ability of each golfer. Based on the best ten of your last twenty scores, the handicap is calculated using a formula created by the U.S. Golf Association which roughly correlates how far above or below par you are likely to score in any given round. Possessing an official handicap index allows you to determine a personal par for a course based on your skill and the course’s difficulty. It allows you to play with golfers of different ability levels by giving the less talented player a certain number of strokes in the round to even things out. You must have an official handicap to play in USGA amateur tournaments. The CDGA handicap system will allow individual golfers to report their scores at any CDGA course via the Internet. The website address is: www.cdga.org Your official handicap card can be printed out at any CDGA computer and the scores of all members can be reviewed over the Internet. Every TFN member who signs up for the TFN handicap service will also receive the CDGA magazine for free.

The narrow fairways and the quick doglegs throughout the course create a real challenge of skill and an even more daunting challenge of golf course management. The entire golf course is set up to be a test in patience and decision-making ability. There’s just enough water and bunkering to force some honest approach shots which means intelligent club selection from the tee is a must. Stray just a bit from the fairway and Wilmette can stymie you. The very mature, stately oak and elm trees encroach very close to the narrow fairways. It is an entertaining and fair test of golf! We really like playing this course but I wish I knew why - maybe it’s the fast sloping greens or water on 11 of the holes or the 54 strategically placed bunkers or the #16 par 3 that is one of the many optical illusions - whatever the reason we really have a lot of fun, especially at the 19th hole. Season Closer: George Dunne National Sunday, September 19th ~ $90 Deadline for sign up is September 5th Tee times start at 9:30am. Includes lunch, drinks, cash prizes & driving range. 16310 S. Central Avenue Oak Forest, IL www.forestpreservegolf.com Weeee’er Baaaaaaack!!! Just in time to use this event as a tune-up for The Fall Classic Tournament Weekend at Fox Valley. Located 26 miles from the Loop, George Dunne is a favorite TFN must play. It’s touted by Golf Digest as one of the top public courses. Golf Chicago Magazine gives it a four star rating and it’s a Certified Audubon Sanctuary. But don’t be fooled by the beautiful woods, wetlands and the occasional deer that wanders into the fairway. This is a challenging course even for the most experienced player. The course features gigantic sand traps and bent grass on the long sloping fairways and large angular greens. A long straight ball is required on several holes to avoid the forced water carries, many with lateral hazards. Eight lakes come into play on eleven holes. The nine shot rule is mandatory ~ six fairway shots and three putts. The outing includes lunch from the grill, two drinks of your choice from the bar and prizes for several games. It is recommended that you come early enough to take advantage of the driving range and putting greens. Event Captain: Diane Meades 312-391-1050 [email protected] Recommended for all skill levels.
