Narrative Report

Gerald B. Healy, MD, FACS, FRCSEng (h), FRCSIre (h)

I arrived at Childrens Hospital Boston in 1976 to oversee a Department that had one half time surgeon, a half time secretary, one office and two examining rooms. Over the ensuing 35 years the Department grew to 15 full time physicians, 6 nurses, 6 physician assistants and 170 employees. In addition, we added 25,000 square feet of clinical space in three locations and a fully NIH funded research laboratory. We introduced innovations in airway surgery, laser surgery, surgical augmentation for hearing impaired

Page 34: The Faculty of Medicine of Harvard University Curriculum Vitae · 1978 Chairman Pediatric Otolaryngology Study Group 1978-1979 Secretary-Treasurer American Academy of Pediatrics,

34

children and pediatric head & neck cancer surgery. These advances positioned the Department as a world leader.

From an academic standpoint we became the major pediatric training location for all three of Boston’s Otolaryngology training programs (Harvard, BU and Tufts). In addition, I began a Pediatric Otolaryngology Fellowship program (the second in the US) in 1977 which by 2009 was considered the premier program in the world. In 1996 I was asked to serve as Surgeon-in-chief at Childrens Hospital. The only otolaryngologist to ever serve in that role in the 150 year history of the Hospital

Externally, between 1986 and 2006 I served as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Otolaryngology and was its Executive Vice President from 1998 to 2006. The first pediatric otolaryngologist to serve as a Director of the Board. Between 1980 and 1996, I was elected President of several of the leading societies in my specialty as well as Chair of the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and in 2007 was elected President of the College. The only otolaryngologist in the 106-year history of the ACS ever so honored. In 2008 I was given Honorary Fellowships in the Royal College of Surgeons in England and the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. The first pediatric otolaryngologist so honored.

Since stepping down from my role at Childrens, I have spent most of my teaching time at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary running training clinics for residents, fellows and students. This program focuses on teaching trainees how to take a proper history and complete a thorough head and neck examination. They are then mentored in decision making around outlining a differential diagnosis, and selecting a proper treatment plan. Communication with the patient and family is stressed. This program also stresses logical planning and continuity of care which the trainees find most rewarding in the frenzy of current practice.
