The Facts …

•Body symmetry- Asymmetrical

•Reproduction- Asexually and Sexually

•Movement- stationary

•Food- snags food from water which passes through them

Phylum Porifera

•Porifera in Greek means “having pores”

•The body of a sponge is covered in pores… These allow the sponges to take in FOOD such as plankton as well as OXYGEN.

•Collar cells aka Choanocytes

•Sponges don’t have bones, yet they are still hard. Sponges have tiny SPICULES that act as skeletons.

So how does a sponge work?Water goes OUT

through the Osculum

Water goes IN through the-

pores

Choaocyte

or

‘collar cell’

Sponges are

Cell Aggregates!

Nemo is in Danger!!

The coral reef is in danger! Although some parts of the coral reef is as hard as a rock, the ecosystem is very

delicate. If things like scuba divers or boat anchors touch the coral it can damage to the reef and destroy many

animals’ niches.
