NATIONAL PARKINSON FOUNDATION
THE FACES OF PARKINSON’S
ANNUAL REPORT 2008
This 2008 Annual Report honors the one million
people in the United States – four million worldwide –
who are the faces of Parkinson’s disease.
We’d like to thank our donors, who allow us to
sustain our mission of bringing help and hope to
these individuals and their families.
From the Chairman
Parkinson’s disease is a terribly debilitating disease. I knowfirsthand, because my father had Parkinson’s disease and Isaw his struggles daily. It was in large part to honor him thatI took on the role of Chairman of the Board, succeeding PaulOreffice last April. Paul had served as Chairman for three anda half years, and both Paul and Jo Ann Pepper Oreffice continueto serve as members of the Board. We are deeply grateful fortheir years of leadership and support and are pleased to behonoring them at our 2009 Annual Gala for Hope.
In 2008, I had the pleasure of chairing the search for our new President and CEO,Ms. Joyce Oberdorf. Anyone who has worked with her these past several monthsquickly comes to the same realization that Paul and I did: Joyce is an individualwith an array of talents that make her uniquely suited to lead NPF into the future. We are lucky to have her.
During the year, NPF continued to serve Parkinson’s patients in the U.S., Canada, and internationally. We funded $3.6 million in grants through our Center ofExcellence network, and we also supported discovery research through oursmall grants program.
Our signature Allied Team Training for Parkinson’s (ATTP) program continuedto provide education for front-line clinical care teams. This program promotes amodel of comprehensive care that seeks to address the full range of issues thatpeople living with Parkinson's disease struggle with daily. We continued our highlycommended efforts to reach the disadvantaged through the National ParkinsonCommunity Network (NPCN), which links NPF with the broad reach of networkstargeting the underserved.
Looking to the future, NPF also completed a strategic study of our largest program, the Center of Excellence network, and formed a task force of Board members toexplore the strategic goals of the Foundation. We understand the critical importanceof having a focused organization and mission, which is made all the more vital in thiseconomic environment. To that end, we intend to concentrate on a mission thatdraws on our key strengths: raising the bar for Parkinson's care through research, education, and outreach. We intend to work hard to define and communicate whatqualifies as good Parkinson’s care, and then to use research efforts to improve it.We are excited about this unique new focus, which will directly impact the lives ofthousands of patients. While the economy remains challenging, we believe ourstrategy—to be launched in 2009—will serve as a platform for success in the future.
The fact is that Parkinson’s disease will not wait for a better economy. Yourcompassion has brought new hope to thousands of individuals with Parkinson’sdisease. I, the Board, our new President and CEO, Ms. Joyce Oberdorf, and ourChairman Emeritus, Nathan Slewett, are all deeply grateful and hope we cancount on your continued support.
Warm wishes,
Bernard J. Fogel, MDChairman
2 | THE FACES OF PARKINSON’S
Some 15 percent of those diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease areYoung-onset or under the age of 50. The annual NPF Young-Onset
Parkinson Network (YOPN) conference is coordinated by and for people livingwith Young-onset Parkinson's disease and has brought individuals together todiscuss life challenges such as continuing to work and maintaining independence. The conferences have provided many opportunities to develop social networks, and share life experiences. The goal is to provide a welcoming, comfortableenvironment for those young people so often isolated by Parkinson's disease.
“ Believing in my two little guys, who were born almost
two years after I was diagnosed, gives me the will
and courage to fight that evil monster we named
‘Parkinson.’ We don’t let the monsters take charge! ”
ULRIKE KRAMER-AGOSTINI
NPF funds research into many areas that impact the physicaland mental well-being of persons affected by Parkinson’s disease,
including studies on cognition/depression, genetic studies, and falls —a common consequence of Parkinson’s disease. The NPF Falls PreventionInitiative awarded grants to new evidence-based interventions aimed atpreventing falls in people with Parkinson’s disease. This initiative is partof NPF’s ongoing efforts to fund research that will have an immediateimpact on the lives of Parkinson’s disease patients worldwide.
“ This photo is of my grandfather, Hans Poulsen, better
known to his grandchildren as Grampy Pop, with his
beloved Weimaraner. I knew Grampy Pop lovedme even
though he never smiled. He had Parkinson’s disease,
and I was only 52 when diagnosed with it. ”

TALI SHOKEK, PsyD
Unique among the national Parkinson’s organizations, NPF has alwaysfocused on addressing unmet needs in Parkinson’s care. Founded in 1957,
NPF is one of the oldest U.S. Parkinson’s organizations, with the most extensivegrassroots network of designated Centers of Excellence, chapters, and supportgroups in the U.S., Canada, and across the world. The centerpiece of NPF’sprograms is its Center of Excellence network – more than 60 institutions providingcare to 50,000 patients. Since 1982, NPF has funded more than $140 million inpatient care, research, and outreach.
“ Parkinson’s disease has given me the capacity to be
more empathetic and understanding. I’ve come to appreciate
life’s hardships and the perseverance that is involved in
overcoming the resulting fear and grief. ”
JOSÉ BERNAL
I t is not unusual to see a patient’s artistic talents flourish, even as their speakingability diminishes. NPF provides guidance on exercises to improve vocal skills in
English and Spanish in its free patient education series, as well as informative articleson maintaining optimum wellness in the quarterly Parkinson Report. In addition totoll-free information and referral services, the NPF website sponsors popular onlineforums, such as ‘Ask the Doctor,’ which enables people to interact with othermembers of the Parkinson’s community and have their questions answered byexperts in Neurology, Nutrition, Speech Pathology, Nursing, and Social Work.
“ I have refused to give in to the difficulties of Parkinson’s
disease or to let the disease take away my life’s work.
I have continued to paint, draw, and produce my art
even though Parkinson’s disease has severely impacted
my life for the past 20 years. ”

6 | THE FACES OF PARKINSON’S
NPF acknowledges that often, the strain on caregivers can be even greaterthan on those in the individual with Parkinson’s. Family members and
friends who care for people with Parkinson’s disease make up part of theestimated 44 million family caregivers in America. NPF’s National ParkinsonCare Network (NPCN) is an outreach initiative designed to reach diverse, rural, and medically underserved communities. The NPCN has continued toenhance programs supporting caregivers and has provided consumerempowerment resources and education for the general public to ensure thatall persons living with Parkinson’s disease receive the best care possible.
“ PD has forced me to look myself squarely in the mirror
and to assess my priorities and capabilities. I am still Phil,
but my focus has shifted, and my life is more balanced.
Bottom line, I am proud to say that I am a husband, a
dad, a warrior, and a very lucky man. ”
KATIE MAE POLLARD
NPF recognizes the positive effect that exercise, as part of acomprehensive care approach, can have on the course of the
disease. Physical therapists and many other health care professionalsbenefit from NPF’s Allied Team Training for Parkinson (ATTP) program –where trainees receive in-depth knowledge to assess and treat personswith Parkinson’s disease in an innovative multidisciplinary setting. ATTPhas helped nearly 1,000 allied health professionals, physicians, andphysician assistants across the country to learn about Parkinson's careusing a dynamic team-based approach.
“ I am 78 years old and I still enjoy walking every day.
I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1992,
but I have made a commitment to exercise daily,
which helps me keep the disease under control. ”
