Thank you all for being a vital part of Humber’s most dramatic transformation yet. History

was made on October 18, 2015 with the opening of the new Humber River Hospital. This was

a moment we will never forget.

For the board members, donors, staff and volunteers of the Foundation, our new Hospital

represents the culmination of almost two decades of dedication and support for a community

that has long deserved this state-of-the-art facility. It has taken all of you, our caring and

compassionate supporters, to make this dream a reality.

Today in the new Hospital, the impact of your donations is seen on every floor, in every

inpatient room, in every operating room. It is felt by the hundreds of patients and their

families whose lives are touched by Humber’s nurses, staff and physicians. In this year’s

Annual Report, you’ll meet some of these patients – Judy, Olga, Destiny and Dave have each

turned to Humber in their time of need. And, thanks to your donations, our care providers

are equipped with the latest technology to save patients’ lives and help them heal.

These patients and their families are among the very first in our community to experience

care at the new Humber River Hospital. This is just the beginning of an ongoing journey of

innovation, expert care and a patient and family experience like no other. There will be

thousands more patients, perhaps even you and your loved ones, who will need Humber.

Judy D’Alelio Grateful New Mother

Recently, the skilled doctors and nurses in Humber’s Maternal &

Child department saved Judy D’Alelio’s life. Shortly after giving

birth to a healthy baby girl, Angelina, Judy experienced massive

blood loss. Our care team responded immediately, calling a Code

Omega. Racing against time, the team rushed to Judy and

worked for three hours to stabilize her. Judy received 21 units of

blood in the space of 45 minutes. A typical surgery uses 1-2 units.

After three days in an induced coma and six days in

hospital, Judy was able to go home and be with her baby girl!

“I am so grateful to everyone at Humber River Hospital. The care,

the nurses, whenever I needed something, they were there in

minutes. I honestly felt like I was at home that week. Thank you

for saving my life.”

Fluid/Blood Level 1 Warmer - Part of Judy’s Care This vital piece of equipment allows for the rapid infusion of warm fluids, like blood and I.V.

fluids, since even a small drop in body temperature can have detrimental effects on a

patient’s recovery. In some cases, this piece of equipment is capable of pumping a full unit

of blood into a patient in 45 seconds.

There are various areas in the Hospital that use Fluid/Blood Level 1 Warmers, including in

our Emergency Department resuscitation rooms and in our operating rooms. Thanks to the

generosity of our donors, Judy’s care team was able to rush into action using this warmer to

pump much needed blood into her hemorrhaging body. Her life was saved and now she

has a bright future with her sunny baby girl.

Thanks to our donors, we have several of these Fluid/Blood Level 1 Warmers at

Humber, valued at $19,780 each.

Olga Chrapko Grateful Cancer Survivor

Something just didn’t feel right. It was 2015, and 84 year old Olga

Chrapko started to sense that something in her body was off. She

was losing weight, and her aches and pains were getting worse.

Olga and her family knew she needed medical attention, and thus

began her journey to diagnosis and care for Lymphoma at

Humber River Hospital. A few set backs and triumphs later, Olga

is on the road to recovery, thanks to Humber’s skilled doctors,

nurses and healthcare staff.

“Every time we see Dr. Wilson and there is good news to report,

he’s so happy for my mom, he jumps out of his chair!” laughs

Nancy, Olga’s daughter. “When I look at my Mom now compared

to how she was 9 months ago I am so grateful. She has gained

some weight back, she’s walking now, no more wheelchair, she’s

pain free. It was a frightening and emotional ordeal – I didn’t

even think I would see her this past Christmas - but she’s here and

she’s fighting to get better every single day thanks to Humber.”

RIVA Mixture Robot - Part of Olga’s Care Chemotherapy drugs are some of the most complicated and toxic

drugs used in a hospital. To enhance patient and staff safety in our

Cancer Care Clinic and Pharmacy, Humber River installed the

state-of-the-art (RIVA) robot to prepare these drugs.

This robot fully automates the process to mix chemotherapy

treatments in a fully-contained enclosure. This eliminates staff

contact with the drugs, and the risk of staff being exposed to

cytotoxic chemicals.

RIVA performs multiple weight and product barcode checks during

compounding to ensure doses are accurate and complete.

Furthermore, the electronic audit trail identifies and labels every

dispensed dose with patient-specific information to ensure accurate

administration. This means that patient safety is greatly enhanced,

and that the right patient receives the right drug at the right time.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Olga’s chemo treatments are

prepared by the RIVA Mixture Robot. And patient and staff safety is

significantly enhanced with our new state-of-the-art RIVA, making

care for patients like Olga efficient and accurate at all times.

Thanks to our donors, we have 1 RIVA Mixture Robot at Humber,

valued at $1.2 million.

Destiny Thompson Grateful Sixth Grader

When Sherill Thompson walked through the doors of Humber to

bring her daughter, Destiny, in for her surgery, she felt a wave of

anxiety wash over her. Years prior, Sherill had tragically lost her

first daughter, and having to bring Destiny in for a procedure was

almost more than she could bear. But thanks to the staff in our

Maternal & Child Department, those fears quickly went away.

Using techniques pioneered through our Hug and Hold Program,

Sherill was able to accompany Destiny into the operating room,

hug her while the anesthetic was administered—and Destiny was

even able to watch her favorite television show while falling

asleep!

“Meeting all the staff in the Hospital, especially Alex (Christofides,

Child Life Specialist) meant the world to me and my family. I’ve

experienced other hospitals in the past, but I’ve never met

someone like Alex before,” explains Sherill. “She walked Destiny

through the whole thing and made us all feel special and cared

for. She even let Destiny choose the flavor of her anesthetic -

strawberry, her favourite!”

OR AV Integration System - Part of Destiny’s

Care Each of Humber’s operating rooms are equipped with integrated

video systems, providing opportunities for educating care providers

on surgery techniques or consultations around the world. The

system includes three cameras located in each operating room, with

multiple screens.

This AV Integration system also enhances our Hug and Hold

program. When children need to have surgery, our talented Child

Life staff use the OR AV Integration System to play the child’s

favorite television show or movie. That, coupled with a parent being

in the operating room with them until they fall asleep, decreases the

child’s anxiety and fear.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Destiny’s surgery experience

was greatly enhanced by the OR AV Integration System. In case you

were wondering - her favorite show, KC Under Cover, was playing as

her mother Sherill hugged her to sleep.

Thanks to our donors, we have 21 OR AV Integration Systems at

Humber, valued at $605,000 each.

complex undertaking, and when I walk through the halls every

day, I feel an immense sense of pride to have worked on a

hospital that is reinventing patient care and saving lives each and

every day.”

“Having now experienced Humber as a patient, I can tell you that

all the staff in the Medical Imaging Department are top notch.

They were warm, friendly and professional – exactly what patients

and their families need when they come to a hospital. As I was

comfortably waiting for my MRI, I truly appreciated all the

planning, thought, and hard work that went into designing and

building a modern medical imaging facility. Every single detail

was put there for a very specific reason – and to see our collective

efforts paying off for patients and their families is one of the

highlights of my career.”

The MRI MR750w 3T - Part of Dave’s

Care The Discovery MR750w 3.0T combines a caring design

with insightful technology to meet the needs of both

clinicians and patients. Its full 3.0T magnet and 70 cm

bore work together to generate extraordinary image

quality without compromises. The result for clinicians is

new levels of diagnostic performance. Patients benefit

from a more comfortable scan experience. Beyond the

widened bore and soft, flexible coils, the table surface

has been completely re-designed to help alleviate

pressure points for a more relaxing exam.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Dave was able

to have his MRI using this state-of-the-art equipment,

making his experience comfortable and stress free.

Thanks to our donors, we have 2 MRI’s at Humber,

valued at $2.4 million each.

patients like Judy, Olga, Destiny and Dave - from the bottom of their hearts, thank you!

But there are still thousands more patients that need your support. Our healthcare

providers are highly skilled and compassionate - but they can’t do their jobs without

you. Please continue to support Humber River, so we can provide our doctors and

nurses with some of the most advanced medical technology available. It will help save

lives, make sick people better, and give families comfort and hope in the future.

Financial Summary

Every dollar raised goes towards the current and ongoing equipment needs for our new

Humber River Hospital. At Humber River Hospital Foundation, we are accountable first and

foremost to you, our donors. Our bottom line is driven by our commitment to ensure the most

money possible is transferred to the Hospital for life saving equipment.

For the year ending March 31, 2016, we continue to see an increase in total donations

received. Thanks to the support of our donors, excluding net investment income, we raised a

total of $10.7 million for the year ending March 31, 2016, which is an 11% increase over

$9.7 million for the year ending March 31, 2015. We achieved excess of revenues over

expenses of $7.1 million for the year ending March 31, 2016, which is a 26% increase over

$5.6 million for the year ending March 31, 2015. As a result, we were able to transfer a total

of $8.6 million to Humber River Hospital for the year ending March 31, 2016.

The following pages highlights the financial activity in the Foundation for the 2015/2016 fiscal

year with comparison to 2014/2015. Each fiscal year, the Foundation is audited by an external

On June 17, 2015, over 700 guests

and sponsors accepted the

challenge to raise one million

dollars for the new Humber River

Hospital in one night! Special

The Community Builders Tribute

was developed to recognize

community leaders who go above

and beyond to not only support

their communities, but to help

them grow. The inaugural tribute

and awards, honouring Sam and

Donna Ciccolini, was held on

Thursday, March 31, 2016 at

Montecassino Hotel & Event

Venue. Admirers and friends, both

request, the new Humber River

Hospital was the recipient of the
