BOME / TREES: Salix Matsudana Tortuosa (Corkscrew Willow)

Twee tuine in Vaaloewer

spog alreeds daarmee.

This beautiful willow has twisted branches and twigs which can also be used in

flower arrangements. Preferable a large garden, it is a fast grower, yet hardy.

STRUIKE / SHRUBS: Azaleas

Die Azalia is ‘n middelmatige, immergroens struik wat vroeg in die lente alreeds

oortrek is met pragtige kleure en is ideaal vir ons tuine hier op Vaaloewer.

The Azalea comes in a variety of beautiful colours and is ideal for the Vaaloewer

garden. A fair size shrub, evergreen and full of flowers in early spring.

ROSE / ROSES

goed as ‘n klomp rose bymekaar in ‘n area geplant word.

A must for every garden, roses come in many varieties, most popular is the

Iceberg. These are hardy roses, which bloom all summer-time to late autumn.

GRONDBEDEKKERS / GROUND COVERS

Periwinkles is ‘n vinnig groeiende, effektiewe grondbedekker. Met ‘n

verskeidenheid van kleure en ‘n hoogte van plus minus 40cm, sal jou tuin ‘n lushof

wees vir die oog.

The Periwinkle will grow well in rough areas. Pretty blue-purple flowers, they grow

to around 40cm. Quick growers they are also available in variegated colours.

Jou tuin moet ‘n lushof wees die lente! Wat is lekkerder as om in ‘n mooi tuin te

braai en te kuier, met die natuurskoon om jou en spesiale vriende en familie!

CANDY’S REOPENING!

A fun day was had by all on Spring day, which also happened to be

Candy’s 16th Birthday!!

After having visited the flea market up at the gate, the locals came

down to the wharf pub to listen to some good music by Frieda Eloff –

even the Goliath heron enjoyed her singing!!

We all kept warm, what with the Jack Daniels products all being on

special and the braai packs went down a treat. Thanks to all who

supported us, even on such a cold spring day!! Dennis and Anne Wilson

Thank you to Dawid Dirks for promptly requesting these tests from

Rand Water!

HOW SAFE IS OUR WATER?

Due to concerns expressed at the workshop held regarding Acid Mine Water about a month ago, the query was also raised about the presence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in our Vaal River water, due to sewage contamination.

Cryptosporidium is a parasite which that can infect your gut (intestines) and cause ‘cryptosporidiosis’, an infection of your gut which can lead to diarrhoea, cramps and sometimes vomiting.

You may become infected if you drink contaminated water. In fact, the largest outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis have occurred when drinking water becomes contaminated with sewage. Most commonly affected are young children under the age of 5, but even adults with no symptoms can pass the infection on to others.

The Giardia parasite lives inside the intestines of infected humans or animals and individuals become infected through coming into contact with contaminated food or water. Symptoms include violent diarrhea, excess gas, stomach or abdominal cramps, upset stomach and vomiting. However after 1-2 days of diarrhea, the opposite occurs, constipation for 4-7 days. Symptoms may fade but a person can become a carrier and transmit to others.

Rand Water tested our water at Vaaloewer at the Plant, Candy’s and at Vaaloewer gate between the week 22 to 27 August 2012 and the according to the analysis but fortunately no Crypto, nor Giardia was detected.

Ready to search for those cruel snares!

First one found by Nikita!

MJ (Mary Joe’s son and a friend) came well equipped for the long search!

Stopped for an interesting breakfast!

COMMUNITY JOINS TOGETHER TO SEARCH FOR SNARES

Saturday morning 22 Sept 9am this little group trooped off together to scour the

koppies for the cruel snares that are being used to kill our little animals.

These barbaric snares are usually placed along paths used by the animals, and lead

to a slow cruel death by strangulation. The more the animal tries to free itself, the

tighter the noose. We spotted a rabbit in Visarend a couple of months ago, with a

deep slash through the length of its neck. Maybe this was one of the ‘lucky’ ones to

escape.

Some animals get their legs caught in the snares and end up getting their legs cut down to the bone. The suffering caused by these snares is unimaginable, and unacceptable.

After a quick demonstration by Gallie as to what to look for, we decided to first

tackle the koppie between Vaaloewer Drive and Visarend. Our first ‘find’ was by

little Nikita, whose Ouma and Oupa van Niekerk lives at 166 Visarend.

What an excellent example set by our youth! MJ and friend, Nikita and her brother,

Kyle! Mianke and Minieke de Bruyn also wanted to join us, but couldn’t. Next time!

Thank you to all who came along. We walked a little further than intended, but the

spirit was good and we are determined to do this on a monthly basis.

Unfortunately it cannot be regularly scheduled since then the ‘****’ will simply

remove their snares before our search.

Should you feel you would like to come along, please let us know.

GOOD RECORD KEEPING CAN SAVE YOUR BACON – Nico Botha Vaal Tax & Trust Services

Some people regard discipline as a chore. For me,it is a kind of order that sets me free to fly -Julie Andrews

There should be no doubt about the fact that Julie Andrews did not have tax in her mind when she made this well-known comment. However, we can apply this quote quite easily to many aspects of Income Tax such as keeping a proper log book of business travel when receiving a car allowance, or keeping detailed records of expenditure incurred directly related to the acquisition, creation, variation or disposal of a capital asset such as your immovable property. The 2012/2013 fiscal budget increased the maximum effective rate of Capital Gains Tax as follows:

Individuals 13.3% (as well as special trusts); Trusts 26.7%; and Companies 18.6%

What this means is that the difference between the proceeds of your property and base cost will represent a capital gain, taxable at the aforementioned rates. Before you do the calculation there are certain exclusions and deductions.

Let us look at one or two examples. You sell your primary residence for less than R 2m, and there will be no capital gain to tax. This only applies to a natural person who owns the property. You (natural person) sell your primary residence for R 3.5m and your base cost is R 1m. This will be the calculation:

Proceeds on sale R 3,500,000 less

Deduct: Base cost -R 1,000,000

R 2,500,000

Deduct: Primary residence abatement - R1,500,000 (reduced as proceeds exceed R 2m)

Capital gain R 1,000,000

Deduct: Current annual exclusion -R 30,000

Taxable gain R 970,000 @ 13.3% = R 129,010.00

If however, you used 15% of the residential property for business purposes, then 15% of the full gain is taxable at a maximum effective rate of 13.3% assuming you are an individual marginal tax payer.

This is where the base cost becomes key. It includes amongst others the following:

Original purchase consideration; Cost of building; Agent’s commission; Advertising costs; Accountant’s costs; Auctioneer’s costs; Transfer costs; Transfer duty; VAT paid and not claimed; Capital expenditure (improvements)

This is where a proper record of the aforementioned costs will ensure that your total base cost deduction is correct. The aforementioned does not cover the situation where the asset was acquired before 1 October 2001 or the property is not the primary residence. That is another story. It also does not cover your boat that may be longer than 10 metres. And then there is the situation in the event of death. What is in and what is out? More about that later.

In the meantime, get that property file out and make sure everything is filed there, otherwise start sourcing the missing information. You may just find that your wings are clipped when you wish to fly off having sold your property.

The amazing Vygie!

Apart from an AMAZING FIRE

BREAK, the leaf juice is used as a

soothing lotion for burns, bruises,

scrapes, cuts, grazes and sunburn,

ringworm, eczema, dermatitis,

sunburn, herpes, nappy rash, thrush,

cold sores, cracked lips, chafing, skin

conditions and allergies. It also

relieves the itch from mosquito, tick

and spider bites both for people and

their animal companions.

PLANT YOUR FIRE-BREAK!

A few weeks ago there was a raging fire at Vaaloewer, and at least two houses were

in danger. We battled the fire and watched as it spread towards a vulnerable house

in Vaaloewer Drive. As it reached the bed or succulents planted alongside this house,

the fire died within a matter of a few minutes.

What an eye-opener! This little angel is easy to grow, one of those plants that thrive

on neglect and can be killed with kindness.

Little Sydney also has other talents and will do roll-overs on your feet when he wants food and will even entertain you with break-dancing!

He made friends with the local Mongoose who showed him a few

tricks, and now Eloise is occasionally the lucky receiver of live snakes, not appreciated at 2am in the morning!

Dr Nature is overloaded marking exam papers, but we were so touched

with a local story of an extraordinary kitty, we decided to share with you!

THE STORY OF SYDNEY THE WATER LOVING KITTY!

This is Sydney, Eloise’s water loving four legged child. His name comes from the Ice Age movie, The Sloth, since from tiny he slept just like the sloth, on his back with his legs dangling in space. When Sydney first came to live with Eloise, he was a really tiny kitten and couldn’t even eat or drink on his own.

Being so tiny, every time he used the litter box, he would stand in his business and …. Had to be dunked into the hand basin to be washed down with Elizabeth Anne’s baby shampoo. Sydney was not too sure whether he was a cat or a human and developed a love for water!

Visitors have to be very careful, since if this amazing kitty hears the bath or shower being prepared, even in the cold of winter, he will leap into the bath or shower with you, and will give you a stern lecture if you try to close him out! Thank you Eloise for share the story of this extraordinary kitty!

VAALOEWER SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB – REOPENED!

Even though the weather was hectic we still had the brave (11 of us) attend our

opening of the Vaaloewer Sports & Social Club. All who were there were so excited

that we would be starting the club again and were happy to assist where they could.

However, we do need 2 or 3 more committee members. We will be meeting every

Wednesday at 18:30. Hopefully we will get to playing on Tuesday & Thursdays in the

near future.

We are only charging R50 pm single and R75 pm per couple which can be paid yearly

or monthly in advance for the use of all the facilities we are offering. Visitors will be

charged R10 per evening.

There are repairs to be done to the hall and toilets and we are hoping to get quotes

soon to make these repairs. Ideally we would be very happy if there was anyone in

the town who could help in this regard.

It is great to see that we have some kiddies coming along too as this is where they

start learning about the game. We are asking for donations for toys, kiddies tables

and chairs etc as we would like to secure an area for the little ones to play and be

safe while the adults are playing badminton, table tennis or darts.

We have had our second Wednesday and it looks like we have some very serious

badminton players in our midst. The social side of the evening was great too as not

everyone was into the badminton but were also great spectators.

The darts and table tennis section needs to be revived so if there is anyone who

would like to help in this regard, we would be most grateful.

Let’s all diarise our Badminton/Sport evenings as we all need to remember that we

need healthy bodies to enjoy all the other wonderful fruits of life.

Our total income from the craft market was R5100.

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED AND THOSE WHO BROUGHT THEIR PURSES!

We thought to use these funds to upgrade out security. It was noted that vehicles

have been coming across next to the boundary line between Vaaloewer and

Rotsdrif and this has become a vulnerable point for Vaaloewer. Portions of the

existing fence have been flattened and stolen. With the help of Henwyn, we now

have a trench, which will help keep unwanted vehicles OUT!

VAALOEWER MAINTENANCE SERVICES (“VMS”)

I am writing this newsletter with overcast skies and the promise of rain in the air. After a long dry winter we desperately need rain to settle the dust and start the new summer growing cycle in all of our gardens. We are thrilled to see signs of our donated and transplanted plants coming to life and at times are pleasantly surprised at what they have turned out to be. With luck we will have beds full of glorious colour to brighten up the entrance.

Now that the rush for the Craft Market is over we can get back to some of the projects that we put on the back burner, such as the irrigation and some type of mulching for weed control.

Pat Bancroft’s Spring Walk raised an amount of R420.00 which has been brought into Petty Cash. Linda du Toit Plant stall raised R500.00 which will be used for mulch material.

THANK YOU

Once again thank you to everyone who has given us a donation; contributed money; or put in their priceless time. The list below reflects contributors who make a monthly contribution towards the garden costs. Thank you for your support.

LETTERS FROM OUR READERS

POSITIVE RESPONSE TO THE RADIO BUDDIES – Pieter Prinsloo

On Saturday the 1st of September at around 03h00 we were woken up by our dogs barking. Usually, if the dogs bark so

early in the morning it’s because of the “dassies” in the veld or maybe a stray dog wandering round and then they will keep

quiet once I call them.

So I got up, walked to the window and starting calling the dogs but they did not stop barking. I thought it was strange and

decided to go out and see what could cause this commotion.

As I stepped out of the house my dog immediately ran to the fence on the other side of the yard and sure enough there was

a stray dog at the fence. I threw a stone at the dog to chase it away but it only ran around to the front side of the yard. As I

walked to the front of the yard I heard someone calling me and as I turned around I saw this guy sitting on one of the little

walls inside my yard!

This gave me quite a scare and my immediate reaction was to go back inside the house and call for the VER on the radio. I

got back in the house and phoned the police while my wife called on the radio informing everyone of the situation. In this

time, the intruder walked up to the house and started knocking on the back door and calling for us. I went out the front and

confronted the guy and took him down to the garage away from the house.

Within minutes there was about 6 or 7 people who showed up to assist.

Initially the intruder told us that there were about 3 other people with him but they run away when I came across him. So

everyone set out in search of the other culprits.

Myself and Gallie stayed behind and the intruder told us 10 different stories about who he was, where he came from, what

he was doing in Vaaloewer and in my yard and every time his story changed.

The Barrage Police arrived after about 30 minutes and took the guy away. The VER took another drive through Vaaloewer to

ensure everything is in order and after that everything was quite.

Thinking back on the incident the chances are that the intruder was only a lost drunk that somehow ended up in my yard,

but I wasn’t prepared to take that chance! I want to send a big Thank You to everyone that came and assisted. This once

again proves that the VER radio system really works!

Thanks Pieter for your letter and confirmation that the radio system really works! – Liz
