Mrs. Lula (Lou) Garris Hinson Mrs. Lula (Lou) Garris Hinson died on Monday, June 5, 2017. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2017, in Lilesville Baptist Church in Lilesville. The family will greet friends following the service. Lou was the daughter of Charles Robert and Ella Jane Carter Garris of Lilesville. She is survived by Aaron, her beloved hus- band and friend of 64 years; three children, Jane, Ronnie (Melody) and Scott (Laura); grandchildren, Lianna (Chevis) Cuthrell, John Landen, and Christo- pher, Michael, Hannah (Christopher Cunningham) and Peter Hinson; great- grandchildren, Carter, Avery and Addie; nieces and nephews and their families. Lou’s sister Martha Jane Garris Atkinson pre- ceded her in death. Lou was a lifelong member of Lilesville Baptist Church. She enjoyed serv- ing on church committees, teaching mission studies, and the fellowship of her dearly loved JOY Sunday School class that she taught for 40 years. She graduated from Lilesville High School in 1947, completed pre-nurs- ing courses at Women’s College (UNCG), and earned her Bachelor’s De- gree in Nursing Education at the Medical College of Virginia (now VCU) in Richmond. After gradua- tion she worked as a nurs- ing educator at MCV for two years, as a nursing in- structor at Watts Hospital in Durham, as an Assistant Director of Nursing at Hamlet Hospital, and as a nurse in the private prac- tice of local physicians. She was Director of Nurs- ing at Anson County Hos- pital, and helped establish and was Director of the LPN program at Anson Technical Institute. She taught Health Oc- cupations at Bowman (Anson) High School for 15 years, and was sponsor of the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) Club at the high school. In her words, “I was always proud of my students who worked hard to learn, and set goals to achieve.” Many HOSA stu- dents won state, regional and national awards. Lou served two terms on the Community Trustee Coun- cil of Anson Community Hospital. She was a char- ter member of Sigma Theta Tau honor society of nursing; a member of Delta Kappa Gamma (Tau chap- ter), and earned an Ameri- can Red Cross pin working with bloodmobiles and state fair first aid centers. Memorials may be made to the cemetery, building, or Elizabeth Lee memorial funds of the Lilesville Baptist Church, Liberty Hospice Services, Meadowview Resident Ac- tivities Fund, or another charity of choice. Lou and her family ap- preciate the loving care of the Meadowview and hos- pice staff, the LBC family and friends and family, near and far. The arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home. Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 4, 2017, in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home with Rev. Jody Campbell and Rev. Kaye Fry offici- ating. Interment with mil- itary honors followed in Savannah United Methodist Church Ceme- tery in Lilesville. Tommy was born June 2, 1924, in Wilm- ington, NC (New Hanover County), a son of the late Lemuel Thomas Landen and the late Mary Catherine Stew- art Landen. He was a graduate of New Hanover High School and received a degree in Mechanical Engi- neering from North Car- olina State University. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II. Tommy worked for a number of years with WR Bonsal Company in Lilesville and later retired from Wade Manufacturing in Wadesboro. He was a member of Lilesville United Methodist Church and at- tended First Baptist Church, Wadesboro. In addition to his par- ents, Tommy was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Ingram Landen and his sister and brother, Annie Doris Landen Smith and Ray Stewart Landen. Surviving are his wife Frances Lovette Williamson Landen; his children, Nancy Landen Getsinger (Bob) of Gibsonville, Lemuel Thomas “Buddy” Landen, III (Read) of New- port, NC and Mary Lillian Landen of Baltimore, MD; his stepson William Frank “Billy” Williamson III of Wadesboro; his grandchil- dren, Merideth Landen Getsinger, Gregory Robert Getsinger (Kathryn), Lianna McDaniel Landen Cuthrell (Chevis), John Thomas Landen, Thomas Duer Landen, Marjorie Read Landen and Anna Elizabeth Williamson; his great-grandchildren, Logan, Reece, Tesla, Carter, Avery, Adeline, Saylor and Charlotte; and his niece and nephews and their families.
