“WestFest” Sunday 26 March

10:00am - 3:00pm

From the Assistant Principal We are now well and truly into Term One with this

being week 6 and I am continually being reminded

about how positive the changes that we have made to

our school are for students and teachers alike. This

week has seen Exeter High continue as a place of

calmness, creating an environment that is most

conducive to learning. This is what we now expect

every lesson, every day and every week at Exeter High

School as we need to be able to guarantee parents,

that students can gain the most from their time in each

class they attend. This calm environment also ensures

our teachers are able to go about their core business

of teaching, without disruption. Students are also

commenting on how settled their classes are and

therefore, the amount of learning they can do has

increased. The Core model that we have implemented

is also proving to foster more positive teacher –

student relationships which in turn, promotes better

learning outcomes as well. The uniform of all students

also looks fantastic and reflects the pride that they

have in their school.

Having been here nearly 12 months now, I can

honestly say that I am incredibly proud of how the

school is operating and am continually telling people outside of

the school about the changes that have been made and how

settled the school is. This message of how the school has been

transformed in relation to behaviour, uniform and learning

expectations is an important one and we as a school

community should be sharing this.

Parent /Teacher Evenings:

Parent/Teacher evenings are an invaluable way to discuss with

your child’s teachers how they are progressing academically, as

well as socially, which is equally important as any parent of a

teenager knows. These evenings (Monday 3rd April 3.30pm –

5.00 pm and Tuesday 4th April 3.30pm – 6.30 pm), also

give you the opportunity to provide any information about your child that teachers might find useful when

working with them. Each student will bring their school report home on Friday 24th March and you can then phone the school office to make appointments to see your child’s teachers.

Attendance:

In last week’s newsletter, Mr Frerk shared our current

attendance data where we had 92 % of students attending each

day. This is an outstanding achievement, but we need to all

make sure that we maintain this high rate of attendance. One

fact that I always find alarming is that if a student attends less

than 90% of their high school education, they are 60% less

likely to complete Year 12. This highlights how important it is

to develop positive habits around attending school right from

the time a child starts Grade 7. If your child is absent for any

reason, please contact the school office so that we can amend

our records to show that it is an explained absence.

Alternative Programs:

We currently have around forty five Grade 9 and 10 students

attending alternative programs during the week as an additional component of their education. These

programs include Studentworks, Mad Wheels Automotive, our Mentoring Program and Work Experience. If

you think that one of these programs might be of benefit to your child, please contact the school on

6394 4366 to discuss the different options available.

Last week Grade 10 Biology students learnt about DNA and

its role in life. They then made their own DNA models out

of lengths of craft wire, coloured strips of paper and contact adhesive.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a molecule that contains all

the information to determine who you are and what you look

like and is shaped like a ladder coiled into a ‘double helix’

shape. The sides of the ladder are a linked chain of alternating

sugar and phosphate molecules and the rungs of the ladder are

attached to the sugar molecules. Each rung is made up of two

chemicals called bases. There are four different bases and they

link together in pairs to form a rung. The order of the bases

and rungs creates a kind of code for the DNA information.

The code is a recipe for building proteins and a group of rungs that carries the recipe for one protein is

called a gene. When many genes are linked together in a DNA ladder, they form a chromosome. The models

were fiddly to make, but were well worth the effort and students learnt some great science along the way!

The World’s Greatest Shave

O n Thursday March 23rd, the 2017 SLC will be holding the annual World’s Greatest Shave event in the Student Centre at lunch time. It will only set you back a silver coin donation to come and witness this exciting event, along with a gold coin donation if you wish to colour your hair. All

these funds will assist with reaching our major goal of $1000 to see our one and only, Mrs Howie be brave and shave! So far through online donations, The Lemon Challenge and donation bucket we have raised approximately $350 of our $1000 goal. We are confident that after our Free Dress Day and sausage sizzle held on Friday we will reach our goal. We would like to thank all who have donated so far and for those still wishing to donate you can still do so by following the link below to donate online or via the school office.

G rade 10 students have been discussing stereotypes as part of their Australian Language unit. We have spent time exploring cultural stereotypes and

discussing their relevance in society and if stereotyping can be dangerous. Students shared their ideas and whether they believe it is dangerous to stereotype. Others completed a personal reflection on a time when they have witnessed others been stereotyped. Below are samples of the work that some of our students have some and their thoughts around the topic of stereotypes.

To me the definition of a stereotype is someone who is mocked because of their personality or traits they possess particular to a particular gender, religion or culture. The idea of stereotyping is both good and bad. It can be good when it is used to create humour however, it can be negative if they it used as a form of mockery to insult and offend another culture.

Anonymous

I believe that a stereotype is an idea associated with a specific race or cultural group. It can be used for humour or it can unfortunately be used to insult the person who the stereotype pertains to. If you choose to stereotype a person there is a chance that you can hurt them emotionally or even physically. I don’t believe hurting people for personal enjoyment at the expense of others is good or funny.

Caleb Matthews-Lynn

A common stereotype that unfortunately exists in society is that black people are dangerous and they are violent, poor and second class citizens. This is definitely a negative stereotype because the stereotype is stating that black people are bad people. Hearing and witnessing this makes me feel angry because racist people are grouping every single black person together as bad people when they don’t even know them. They are not giving them a fair chance and are judging them based on an opinion or assumption. I believe stereotypes even when said in a joking manner can be dangerous and harmful to others because it makes them feel bad about themselves which is not funny or fair.

A time when I have witnessed someone being

9 D and 9C are currently studying the film

Forrest Gump. The film refers to many aspects

of American history, so as a pre-viewing activity

the class researched events and people related to

the film. One of these historic events was the

Vietnam War. This is an extract from the

slideshow Lucy Cooper and Jaidyn Hillard

produced on it.
