What a Waste• Your cells use up nutrients from food (protein,
carbs, vitamins) and create waste• The Excretory System collects and removes
waste from the body– Like trash collectors
• Process of removing waste is called Excretion.
![Page 3: The Excretory System](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062222/56816696550346895dda7c44/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Your Wha?• To leave the body, urine
follows this path…1. Kidneys2. Ureters – tubes leading
out of the kidneys3. Urinary Bladder –
pouch that stores urine4. Urethra – tube that
leads out of the body
• Urea and other waste is removed from the body in the form of Urine: mixture of water and urea.

Organs of Importance
• The major organs of the Excretory System are your two Kidneys
• Kidneys filter out waste called Urea, a chemical made from broken down proteins.

Filtration Station• Your kidneys filter 180
liters of fluid each day– Only about 2 liters are
converted into Urine• The kidney contains
hundreds of thousands of filters called Nephrons: structures that remove waste from blood.

Water Weight
• Up to 60% of your body is water
• You need to take in 2 liters of water a day
• Kidneys help maintain water levels to keep you in Homeostasis (stable internal environment).

Ur-ine Trouble!• Urine can be tested to check
for illness– Glucose (a simple carb) in the
urine indicates risk of Diabetes– Protein in urine can indicate
problems with your kidneys• Urine is also a good indicator
of your hydration levels.

the Excretory System?
