EPIPHANY EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH
The Examiner The Newsletter of Epiphany Evangelical Lutheran Church
June and July 2011
Plans for our April 2012 Holy Land Trip
We have a great itinerary at a great time of year, a great inclusive price for a 12-
day trip, a great Lutheran seminary professor as our guide and instructor, and
some greatly interested people! All we need…is for more people to sign up!
I’m excited that the following persons have signed up for the trip and made the
initial deposit:
John and Tatter Hartmann
Mike and Stephanie Horacek
Mac and Carole Alfriend
Chris and Terry Price
Inger Kristoffersen (Hanne Hamlin’s mom)
I know several others are interested and still making plans to go. But we’ll need a group of at least 25. So
please consider joining us on this fabulous faith journey, and let me know of your interest.
Brochures are available from the bulletin board display in the Commons!

Thanks to abundant spring rains and the hard work of
the garden volunteers, our first community garden is off
to a healthy start. Our two small plots have a 100%
success rate so far. Potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, basil,
cabbage (green and red), parsley, zucchini and squash
are all doing well and will be producing fruit very soon
that can be donated to local pantries. A water barrel,
constructed by Bill Crouch, will provide water once the
rains stop falling in the summer.
Unfortunately, the weeds are starting to take advantage
of the growing season, too. If you would like to
volunteer to weed and/or water our small plots (30
minutes should be plenty of time to get both jobs
done), please contact Chris Crouch
([email protected]) or Pastor Phillip
([email protected]). This would be a
perfect, short service opportunity for a family with
young children!
Thanks to the following people for getting this “off the
ground” (or in the ground, as the case may be): Chris
and Bill Crouch, Steve Ring, Laura and Amelie Bice,
Stephanie Hamlett, Turner Barger, Beth Barger, and
Gretchen Spradlin. Thanks to Barry Westin for the
compost!
Epiphany’s Community Garden needs weeders!

SPECIAL MUSIC FOR SUMMER
If you are interested in sharing your musical talents during worship in the summer
months, please sign up on the sheets located on the board outside the Music Room. We
are so fortunate to have many talented individuals willing to share their talents to
enhance our worship experience as our choirs take a well-deserved break for the
summer months. This opportunity is open to all musicians of all skill levels and all
ages. This has become a tradition that fills quickly, so please don’t wait until the last
minute! Contact Kevin at 746-5756 if you have questions.
MUSIC MINISTRY PICNIC
All music ministry participants and their families are invited to attend an end of
year picnic at the Bargers’ home on Saturday, June 11 beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. We will provide the chicken and
drinks. The pool will be open, so bring your suit and towel! So that we can plan
accordingly for food, please respond to Kevin and Beth at 746-5756 or
[email protected] by June 9. We hope many of you can enjoy this relaxing
time of fellowship and celebration of God’s musical gifts.

BLOOD DRIVE
Save the Date……Epiphany Lutheran
Church and Virginia Blood Services are holding
a Blood Drive on September 25, 2011. Details
and information on signing up to donate will be
coming soon!
The Health and Wellness Ministry want to thank
all the families that have donated their time and
food to the “Take Them a Meal” program. We
are still accepting requests for deliveries.
Don’t forget our Blood Pressure screenings in
the parlor on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each
month. If you would like to help out with them,
please contact Berni Lane at 405-6818.
Altar Care Volunteers Needed
The Altar Care team is in
need of some additional
volunteers. We’ve been
blessed with many long time
volunteers who have served
many years but have retired.
This team sets up
Communion, washes glasses
after Communion, polishes
brass, fills candles, sets out
Altar flowers, and changes paraments (as needed) each
week.
Two (2) teams of 2-3 people work each month each
taking 2 Saturdays to prepare and 2 Sundays to wash
communion cups and clean-up after worship.
Saturday prep takes about 45 minutes. Tasks are easy.
Flexible scheduling and training are available. This is a
wonderful way to connect with a friend or for a family
to serve together.
If you are only available on Sunday morning, we would
love to have another pair of hands help clear the
Communion table and wash glasses. This helps the rest
of the volunteers get to their other commitments on
time.
If you are interested, please contact Cathy
DeLesDernier at 264-6372 or sign up on the schedule in
the Sacristy.

H.H.O.P.E. Happenings
The H.H.O.P.E. Ministry celebrated its one-year anniversary on May 11th. Epiphany’s pantry grew in many
exciting and unexpected ways during its first 12 months, and we anticipate even more growth and
opportunities to serve our community in the coming year!
The success of H.H.O.P.E. can be attributed to the dedicated efforts and generosity of the congregation at
Epiphany. To everyone who volunteered on Saturday mornings, donated food and non-food items, assisted
with shopping, made monetary contributions, prayed for the ministry, performed maintenance tasks in the
pantry, and offered words and notes of encouragement, the H.H.O.P.E. Ministry Team offers our sincere
gratitude and appreciation for your outpouring of support.
H.H.O.P.E.’s First Year Highlights…
During our first month of distribution in June 2010, H.H.O.P.E.
served 5 households, for a total of 31 guests. In April 2011, 34
households were served, for a total of 133 guests.
A total of 1,020 guests received assistance from Epiphany’s pantry,
including 52 seniors, 451 adults, and 517 children.
American Sign Language was used to communicate with our 15
deaf/hard of hearing guests.
H.H.O.P.E. distributed 12,157 lbs. of food and non-food items to the
needy in the Richmond-metro area.
The Epiphany congregation volunteered over 1,130 hours at our church pantry.
On Saturday mornings, 57 different individuals helped with the distribution to our guests.
Almighty and Everlasting God, we lift up all guests served by H.H.O.P.E. and pray that through our
words and deeds we may share the Good News. Bless those who are hungry, face illness,
heartache, or worry, and comfort them with your Eternal Grace. Amen.

We are looking for persons to serve with our
Children and Youth Sunday School Program
What does this mean?
At Epiphany, our Sunday School program runs smoothly with Teaching Teams for
each class (Age 2—High School). A Teaching Team is made up of four persons, two
lead teachers and two helpers. This method allows persons to serve with flexibility
and does not require them to be here every Sunday. Each teaching team works out
their own schedule as to who teaches/helps when. Each week there are always at
least two adults in each class. There are also “behind the scenes” jobs that assist with
the flow of Sunday School.
Which jobs are available?
Lead Teacher—Responsible for planning and teaching lessons. A specific curriculum is used in each class,
and the teachers help make sure that the goals and objectives for each age group is discussed.
Helper– Acts as an assistant to the lead teacher by helping children participate, assisting with parts of the les-
son, and gathering supplies as needed.
Sunday School Superintendent—Helps oversee the Sunday School program for children ages 2 through 12th
grade, working closely with the Director of Christian Education, Children & Youth Sunday School Team, and
Teaching Teams during the regular Sunday School year of September through May. (NOTE: This position
requires a Sunday School hour time commitment every Sunday of September through May.) Assist teachers/
helpers on a Sunday morning by answering questions concerning photocopying, where to find supplies and
other resources. Helps DCE with recruitment for Teaching Team members. Serves as the Team Leader for the
Children & Youth Sunday School Team.
Christian Education Assistant— Responsible for distributing and collecting attendance folders and offering,
and inputting attendance data into our database.
Supply Closet Coordinator— Responsible for making sure there are enough supplies in our Supply Closet for
the classes to use for crafts and other projects and for keeping the closet neat. This person also acts as a craft-
go-to for teachers who made need help with craft ideas.
Substitute— Is called on when a regular teaching team member is absent.
Is training offered?
There will be training for Teaching Teams the middle to end of August. Check out the August newsletter for
dates and times.
I have some questions, whom do I ask?
You may speak with Christy Huffman, 282-6066 or [email protected]
How do I sign up?
Contact Christy Huffman via email at [email protected] or 282-6066 or checkout the sign up on
the church website starting in July.
