A few superintendents are beginning toappreciate the challenge of improving thedriving range. Bob Farren at Pinehurst Coun-try Club in Pinehurst, NC, Julian Hopkinsat the Hills of Lakeway in Austin, TX, TomAlex at Grand Cypress Golf Course in Orlan-do, FL, and Tim Gavelek at Alta Mesa Coun-try Club in Mesa, AZ, have new respect fortheir driving ranges. The reason is they aren'tjust driving ranges, they are carefully-designed practice and teaching areas thatare improving the relationship between thesuperintendent and the golf professional andgenerating important revenue to theircourses.

Without taking up much more space thana large driving range, roughly ten acres, asuperintendent working with the teachingpro at his course can provide the aspiringgolfer with a place to use every club in hisbag and practice every possible shot he mayface on the course. This is done by addingfeatures such as target greens with multi-ple pin placements, practice greens, practicebunkers and multiple tees. It's more workfor the superintendent, but the work is morerewarding.

The result is a school area where golfprofessionals can teach students skills ina situation closely resembling what they willexperience on !he course. Computer-assisted video equipment helps the instruc-tors analyze the student's swing and bodymotion. By refining the golfer's swing andhaving him practice a wide variety of shotsover and over again in a situation much likethe actual course, the instructor can do abetter job. One instructor can effectively trainfive to seven students at a time.

Golf lessons have always been availablefrom teaching pros at all types of courses,resort courses being no exception. The progenerally teaches the basics of driving, chip-ping, pitching and putting to students whiletrying not to disturb golfers on the course.This is not easy when there is a single prac-tice green, an occasional driving range anda rare practice bunker-all spread outaround the course. As a result, many golfinstructors have inadequate facilities to pro-vide their students with confidence in theirgame before they go out onto the course.

While there have been cases of superin-tendents working with pros to make golftraining facilities more organized, it is theevolution of the range area at Pinehurst overthe past seven years and the improvementof the Pinehurst concept by Jack Nicklausin 1981 at the Hills of Lakeway that haveresulted in the "super range."

Pinehurst began offering junior golf pro-grams in 1965 on its driving range called"Maniac Hill" by its designer, Donald Ross.The range was located next to the secondof four courses designed by Ross for Pine-hurst in the early 1900s and adjacent to sodnursery. Three more courses have sincebeen built at the resort for a total of seven.

In 1979, Jack Lumpkin, director of instruc-tion for Pinehurst, wanted to make adulttraining programs available. The manage-

ment of Club Corporation that owns Pine-hurst liked the concept and applied theirmarketing skills to create what is known to-day as the Golf Advantage School. Theyreasoned that three- to five-day schoolscould attract tourist golfers to the famousNorth Carolina resort. Tuition, ranging from$700 to $1,300, would include all instruc-tion, greens fees to any of the resort'scourses, lodging and an assortment of otheramenities.

The decision was made to convert therange, practice green and sad nursery in-to a training center for the school. By remov-ing a few trees, an eight-acre square areawas available for a classroom building, therange and other practice features. The teeon one end of the 350-yard-long range andthe nearby practice green remained avail-able for golfers preparing to play any of theresort's courses. Bermudagrass targetgreens were added to the range. A secondlarge tee area was constructed on the op-posite end for the school. Another large bent-grass putting green was built next to theexisting practice green. In the remainingspace two chipping greens were installedand surrounded by two practice bunkers.Each chipping green has three different pinplacements. Finally, the area around thechipping greens and bunkers was gradedto provide an assortment of uphill and down-hill lies.

Today the school area is used for morethan 50 classes every year says Ken Crow,director of the Advantage Schools. Each offive instructors works with no more than sixstudents at a time. While one instructorteaches his group pitching and sand play,other instructors work with their studentson chipping, putting, driving and develop-ing an effective swing. Each group has threeintensive two-hour sessions each day. Whenthe last class ends at 3 p.m., the instruc-tors take four students out onto the Num-ber Two course to help them apply whatthey have learned that day.

"You can imagine how much repair workthere is to complete before the followingmorning," says Crow. The task falls into thecapable hands of superintendent Bob Far-ren, Crow's brother-in-law. Farren is respon-sible for the school area, generallandscap-ing around the clubhouse and the NumberTwo course. Farren and three other superin-tendents report to Brad Kocher, chief su-perintendent for all of Pinehurst's sevencourses.

"Teamwork is critical to keeping class-es on time and the school area in top con-dition. When the students arrive for classearly each morning, everything has to beready. That means Bob has to schedulemost maintenance for the evening and earlymorning. Once classes start, distractionsare kept to a minimum."

"We do 90 percent of the maintenancein the evening," explains Farren. "First wesweep up the divots and broken tees witha Parker Sweeper. The divot holes are filled

with sandy soil mixed with perennial ryegrassseed. This takes nearly 40 hours each weekbecause there is more than an acre of teesand 20,000 square feet of chipping area."The range and chipping areas are mowedevery other day after all divots are repaired.

Every morning before the students arrive,the greens are mowed and the bunkers areraked. The tees are mowed every othermorning. "First impressions are very impor-tant for the student or the golfer using thepractice area," says Crow. "A beat-up drivingrange is a poor introduction to a golf course.The entire area is overseeded in late sum-mer just as the courses are,"

The practice greens at Lakeway are walk-mowed each morning before classes begin.

"Everything we do for the golf courseswe do for the golf school," says Farren. "Theirrigation system was upgraded and expand-ed when the changes were made in 1980.We aerify the course, like we aerify the fair-ways, four times each year. In some waysthe school receives more care than thecourse. It needs more fertilizer, topdress-ing and overseeding. The divot work isalmost a full-time job for one person."

Crow is in the process of breaking outthe cost of maintaining the school area fromthe golf course. Club Corporation is evalu-ating the Advantage School program forother resort courses it owns. "We are seri-ously looking to improve the range areasof five or more courses at the present time,"says Crow. "Bob is providing us with themaintenance cost information so we canmake a practical decision about the profita-bility of golf schools at other locations. Sofar, our figures show the revenue producedby the school is easily worth the cost of ad-ditional maintenance for the range area."

A former Advantage School instructor,Mike Labeau, took the "super-range" con-cept to Arizona three years ago when heaccepted the golf pro position at Alta Me-sa Country Club, in Mesa, AZ. The courseis private except for the Pinehurst-like rangearea. It is superintendent Tim Gavelek's se-cond experience with an improved range."The range at Ventana Canyon in Tucson,where I used to work, has tees on both ends

of the range," Gavelek said. "When I cameto Alta Mesa, the range really impressedme. It shows a range can be more valua-ble to a course than previously thought."

LaBeau can work with students who arenot members of the club without leaving thecourse. The range generates a profit in ad-dition to a reputation as the best practicerange in the Phoenix area. Gavelek assignsone member of his crew just to the range.In the winter, Gavelek overseeds the tar-get greens but not the range. "Golfers paymore attention to accuracy and worry lessabout distance," says Gavelek. "You seefewer golfers lifting up big hunks of turf tryingto hit the ball 250 yards."

Both teaching professionals and superin-tendents seem to agree that Jack Nicklaustook the "super-range" concept and perfect-ed it at the Hills of Lakeway in 1981 andGrand Cypress in 1983. In both cases, thedevelopers hired Nicklaus to design a golfcourse and a golf academy. He had beenimpressed by the school at Pinehurst butthought it lacked one primary feature, prac-tice holes. So he included three full-lengthpractice holes to the range configuration,one par 3, one par 4 and a par 5. Each ofthe holes has five different tees, three differ-ent pin placements on each green, fairwaybunkers, uneven lie mounds, and rough ofvarying heights of cut. Nicklaus gave instruc-tors everything they could possibly want,including computerized videotape equip-ment that analyzes a golfer's swing.

When Nicklaus designed his version ofthe "super range," he consulted with EdEtchells, his supervisor of golf course main-tenance at Golf Turf, the maintenance di-vision of Golden Bear. He knew the beat-ing the academy turf would take. He alsoknew there were two ways to control turfwear. The first was to design the academieswith enough tee area to distribute the traffic.The other was to have Etchells and hisagronomist, Steve Batten, put together arecommended maintenance program thatwould accelerate the recovery of the turf.

The superintendents at the academieshave followed these recommendations sincethe courses and the academies opened.Julian Hopkins at the Hills of Lakeway hasthe larger of the two academy areas, 15acres. Despite the poor Texas economy,Clayton Cole, director of the Academy ofGolf, has not cut back the maintenancebudget. In addition to revenue from 42school sessions each year, the academyholds clinics every year for the SouthernTexas PGA and corporations. There arethree types of personal memberships it sellsto individual golfers each year ranging inprice from $125 to $745. Members can pol-ish their skills at the academy anytime class-es are not being held. The adjacent 18-holeHills is private.

mower. The two pitching greens are Tifgreenbermudagrass mowed at 5/32 inch. The fair-ways, range, tees, six target greens and theroughs are Tifway bermudagrass. All ber-mudagrass is overseeded with perennialryegrass in the fall. "There are five differ-ent heights of cut for the turf at the acade-my," states Hopkins. "We even mow the driv-ing range at 7/16 inch, the recommendedheight of fairways for PGA tournaments."

Hopkins is extremely cautious with hisfertilizer program. Most nitrogen is in a slowrelease form, either sulfur-coated urea ormethylene urea from Scotts. Potassium lev-els are checked regularly to make sure rootshave the nutrients they need to withstandtraffic stress. The tees are given an extrapound of nitrogen each month in the formof ammonium sulfate. Hopkins uses sulfurcoated urea and ammonium sulfate to coun-teract alkaline soil conditions.

Located 150 miles from the Gulf of Mex-ico, Austin is characteristically hot and humidfrom May through October. Hopkins is onconstant watch for brown patch and Pythi-urn during this period and applies fungicidesweekly. He uses primarily wettable powders,alternating fungicides frequently to avoidproblems with resistance. In the late fall andspring, his attention shifts over to leaf spotand dollar spot.

To assure turf hardiness, he regularly ap-plies potassium in his fertilizer program andputs down an ounce of iron in the form offerrous sulfate every two weeks. All chem-icals are applied to the greens with a walk-behind spray boom. No vehicles or ridinggreensmowers are allowed on the puttinggreens.

The irrigation system at the academy pro-vides an unusual amount of control overmoisture. Each green is a single station onthe hydraulic Toro system. Three centralcontrollers allow a separate station for ev-ery two irrigation heads on the fairways anddriving range. Hopkins irrigates the ber-mudagrass from sundown to 5 a.m. and thebentgrass greens between then and sunup.

Besides aerating the tees and greensthree times each year, Hopkin's crew top-dresses the tees with sand every week andsometimes twice a week. During the winter,ryegrass seed is mixed with the sand. Mostof this work is done on Mondays when theacademy is closed. "That one day is veryimportant to the maintenance program," saysHopkins. "It gives us a chance to catch upon repair work and gives the turf a well-deserved day of rest. It's also the day weapply all pesticides."

"The academy is not a second sister tothe golf course when it comes to main-tenance," says Hopkins. "When I budgetfor the course, I also budget for the acade-my." The academy shares equipment withthe golf course. The only special main-tenance equipment needed for the acade-my are sweepers to pick up the divots anda ball retriever for the range.

When the academy was new, three people

of the 18-member maintenance crew for theHills of Lakeway spent the majority of theirtime working at the academy. After six yearsof experience keeping the academy in topshape, Hopkins now assigns only one crew-member to the academy on a full-time ba-sis. "If he needs help, I can call one or twoguys over from the golf course for a fewhours," states Hopkins. "Part of the trickis scheduling jobs like aeration, topdress-ing and applying pesticide so one crew cando both the course and the academy on thesame day."

Lakeway superintendent Julian Hopkins keepsa close watch on nutrient levels on the bent-grass greens.

Nicklaus changed very little when hedesigned the Academy of Golf at GrandCypress Resort in Orlando. It has all thefeatures of Lakeway plus a lake on the parfive practice hole. The greens are Tifdwarfbermudagrass instead of the bentgrass atLakeway.

Superintendent Tom Alex is responsiblefor the academy and the 27-hole GrandCypress Golf Course. Alex is used tochallenges because he came to GrandCypress from the Tournament Players' Clubin Jacksonville, FL, the notorious coursedesigned by Pete Dye. The experience atTPC has been valuable to Alex since Nick-laus designed Grand Cypress in the Scot-tish tradition with steep bunkers and heavily-mounded fairways.

It's not the fact that Alex has a 27-hole,maintenance-intensive course to maintainon top of the academy that causes him themost concern, it is the limited amount oftime he has to run equipment. "We're try-ing not to put lights on some of our equip-ment, but we may end up doing that," Alexconfesses. During three- and five-dayschools, his crew must complete all majorwork between four in the afternoon and eightthe next morning.

From September to May, schools are vir-tually back-to-back, with only an occasional

one-elay break in between. "The hardest timeis during transition when we overseed theentire academy with perennial rygrass," saysAlex. "The fall is a bad time for insects anddiseases in Orlando. They make overseed-ing that much harder, especially when youhave to live up to the quality golfers expectfrom a Nicklaus course." Like Hopkins, Alexis very careful about fertilization and irrigationto avoid problems with diseases. "We can'tpush the ryegrass too much, even on thetees." He also maintains a close watch forsod webworms and treats regularly withProxol and Dursban.

As the academy grows in popularity andGrand Cypress opens a fourth nine at thegolf course, Alex's work will grow. "It's stag-gering to think about the amount of workthat has to be done, but the success of theacademy makes it worthwhile," Alex reflects."We must be doing something right becauseten more courses in the area are planningto expand their ranges into school areas."

In Clearwater, just 90 miles from CypressGardens, the Professional Golf AssociationTour has opened its version of the "super-range" called the Family Golf Center. Thefacility centers around a driving range andtwo miniature golf courses on 22 acres. Wi-thin the range area are nine target greens,each averaging 4,000 square feet, borderedby bunkers. The ninth green is a recrea-tion of the 17th green at the TournamentPlayers Club at Sawgrass surrounded withsand instead of water.

More than two acres of bermuda-grass/ryegrass tees are divided into two tiersto accommodate more than 120 golfers ata time. On the side of the range are prac-tice bunkers. A unique series of lights posi-tioned on poles behind the tees and on thesurface out on the range illuminate the Fa-mily Golf Center for night practice. Two PGAteaching professionals and three appren-tice instructors hold group and individuallessons seven days a week. Even the minia-ture golf courses are not the windmill vari-ety. They are designed to provide the sameroll and angle putts found on golf courses.

"We hope private investors and munici-palities will provide the land and capital tobuild Family Golf Centers in major metropoli-tan areas across the country," says RickEvans, vice president of the PGA Tour. Thegoals, according to Evans, are to providea facility for the public to learn the gameof golf and to offer a convenient facility forgolfers to practice. Five more Family GolfCenters are in the planning stage, includ-ing one in Scottsdale, AZ., and one in Arling-ton, TX. Evans believes more than 100 ofthe centers will be built in the next ten years.

The driving range, once an unpleasantnecessity for some golf courses and theirsuperintendents, is evolving to better servethe needs of today's busy golfers. At thesame time, it is producing new revenuesfor all types of golf courses. By working withthe golf professional and golf course design-er, the superintendent is providing his em-ployer not only with quality turf, but withgreater financial stability. ~
