Welcome, everyone, to this after-noon's Southern League Divi-sion One South & West match

with Wantage Town. Please make ourvisitors feel welcome. Like ourselves,Wantage haven't made a great start to theseason - they're three points better offthan us having played two games more. This is our first game since the defeat atMangotsfield twelve days ago and that'sbecause we were due to play DidcotTown last Saturday. Didcot were playingin the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FACup and they did our division proud withan excellent 4-2 win over Isthmian Pre-mier outfit Brentwood Town, comingback from an early 2-0 deficit. Their re-ward is a home tie with Exeter City onNovember 7th.Let's hope the rest we've had since theMangotsfield game will have allowed ourplayers to recover from a few knocks. AsI write these notes, the situation regardingMark Gamble is no clearer. When wehave more information it'll be posted onthe web-site.I wasn't at the Mangotsfield game and sothere was no match report written or in-terview with Steve Cuss after the game. Iknow a lot of supporters can't get to awaygames - particularly in midweek - andyou look forward to the match report so,if any of you would like to have a go atwriting a match report or interviewingSteve Cuss, please don't be shy in comingforward. After about 350 video reports

over the past seven or so years, I find I'mrunning out of things to say!As you all know, we rely heavily on vol-unteers at the Club. One such is DaveWebber who manages the supporters' fo-rum and produces & distributes themonthly fixture poster. Thanks for allyour efforts, Dave. If anyone else wouldlike to become more involved in runningthe club, please talk to any Director. And if any of you Magpie fans would liketo own some shares in the Club, pleasespeak to me or any director about what'sinvolved. You don't have to be a Russianoligarch....of course, if you are, you'll bevery welcome.I mentioned Dave Webber's excellent fix-ture posters above. The posters show Re-serves games and, when they're playingon the main pitch, our Ladies and U-18teams' fixtures. Both these teams are wellworth watching so why not look out fortheir games.Don't forget we're at home to Gillinghamin the Dorset Senior Cup on Tuesdaynight. Season tickets aren't valid for thatgame but we're reducing admission prices- £6 for adults, £3 for concessions, andUnder 16s free. Meanwhile, enjoy thisafternoon's match.

From the DugoutWelcome to this afternoon’s Evo-

stik League Southern fixtureagainst Wantage Town. We ex-

tend a warm welcome to the visiting man-agement team along with the players, directors and supporters. The last home game in the cup against.Weymouth was a much improved perform-ance taking our higher league opponentsall the way before losing on penalties. The pleasing issue for me was that westayed in the game, and defended wellwhich allowed us to have our spell at theend of the game when the Weymouthkeeper made good saves from FranklynClarke and Billy Maybury before PatrickWilson scored his first goal for Wimborneto force the penalty shoot out.The away game at Bishops Cleeve contin-ued the improved performances. We weredisappointed to only get a draw after lead-ing twice in the game through Carl Prestonand Luke Holmes, although playing thelast half an hour with ten men did make ita point gained. We have never enjoyed travelling to Man-gotsfield and again it proved a difficultplace to go to. I felt we were better thanthe 1-3 defeat, particularly during the sec-ond half when I thought our passing andapproach play was good with Luke Holm-es again getting on the score sheet.

I’m delighted to welcome back Jamie Dav-idson to the Club after his transfer fromPoole Town. Of course Jamie needs nointroduction having spent five seasons hereenjoying some good times. He comesstraight into the squad. For today's game we will be withoutFranklyn Clarke (suspended) and Ian Oliv-er (unavailable) but we will hopefully haveScott Arnold and Ryan Johnson availableafter injury. Please keep your continued support going -it's much appreciated.Enjoy the game.

From the Dressing RoomHi, and welcome to today’s league

game against Wantage Town.Since the last programme, we’ve played 3times. The first was the Red Insure LeagueCup tie at home to Weymouth. These cupgames give Steve the opportunity to lookat squad players, and to try different tac-tics. 16 year old Callum O’Hare came onfor Ryan after half an hour, and did well.To finish on level terms with higherleague opponents was a good perform-ance. But the game was overshadowed bythe injury to Gambo. At the time of writ-ing he’s still waiting for the swelling to godown before knowing the extent of his in-juries. I know you’ll all join me in wishinghim a full and speedy recovery. The following Saturday we played well atBishops Cleeve. We got to half-time with-out letting a goal in, and that was encour-aging. We went one-up through Carl witha typical goal-poacher’s finish. Then therewas the Franklyn incident which resultedin his red card, and the ref giving a corner. The lads close to it thought it was a goalkick. So to concede a goal from it was dis-appointing in lots of ways. Franklyn hadplayed a really disciplined defensive roleon the right until then. The lads showedgreat spirit with 10 men, and the goal thatput us back in the lead with 5 minutes togo was a good one. There was a great ballfrom Billy to Griff wide on the right. Hetook the defenders on and delivered a lowcross to Luke who turned it in. You thenthink that we ought to hold on, but theykept running at us, and won a late penalty.Overall we were the better side, so it wasdisappointing not to have come away withall 3 points.

Franklyn is a good player, and you don’twant to curb his natural game. He apolo-gised to the lads at the next game, and asplayers that’s all you can ask of a team-mate. He’s suspended for 3 games.Mangotsfield mid-week is a tough place togo, and we’ve not done well there in re-cent seasons. I thought we started well andwere doing OK. Then they scored from acorner - it’s always disappointing to con-cede from a set-piece. It looked as thoughwe’d get to the break one down, but thenthey got a penalty right on half-time, andthat changed things. In the second half wehad to chase the game, and they got a thirdafter 10 minutes. Luke’s goal was greatexecution. Their keeper was off his line alot, sweeping behind their defence. Whenthe ball broke to Luke he lobbed it firsttime into the net. It took Luke a while toget on the scoresheet last season, but nowhe’s got 2 in 2 games, and that’s great forhim and the team. Other positives from thetrip to Mangotsfield? I thought Declan hadanother good game, and Morgan did wellwhen he came on.With no game last Saturday, Steve gave usthe day off, and that gave the lads withniggling injuries more time to recover. Then we had double training sessions thisweek, and time to work on a few things.Today is the first of a run of 3 homegames In Wantage’s 14 league gamesthey’ve scored 25, one less than us, andconceded 24. So it could be another excit-ing game for the neutrals! We’ll be goingall out to get another win at the Cuthbury, and we look forward to your usual greatsupport.

Wimborne Town 1 Weymouth 1 - 13 Oct 2015 - Ken Fergus reportsA bad injury to Mark Gamble overshad-owed an excellent performance by a youngMagpie team as they went out of the RedInsure Cup to Weymouth on penalties. The incident happened on 53 minuteswhen Wimborne were pressing hard for anequaliser. The ball came into the box fromthe left and Mark went into a 50/50 chal-lenge and was left on the ground in agony. After treatment he was stretchered off.No blame whatsoever attaches to the Wey-mouth player involved in the tackle and wemust thank Terras’ physio Sophie Shapp-ard for her help in treating Mark.Steve Cuss rested a number of regularsand, with Jon Blake, James Stokoe, SamGriffin & Wayne Crutcher all on thebench, the starting line-up looked young.A strong Weymouth team started well andenjoyed most of the early possession, knocking the ball about quickly and accu-rately and moving well. But they didn'thave it all their own way, with Luke Holm-es & Franklyn Clarke in particular playingsome good stuff. On 12 minutes, Frank-lyn's run took him to the left byline and ledto a Magpie corner and three minutes laterIan Oliver headed another corner wide.Morgan Turner, who looked sharp and wasworking hard, won yet another corner on24 minutes but the delivery was disap-pointing and it was cleared at the near post. Then, on 25 minutes, Weymouth took thelead. A diagonal cross from the right tothe far post was met by Tim Sills and hisheader back across goal found the net.Ryan Johnson had to go off on 37 minutesand 17-year-old Ryan was replaced by 16-year-old Callum O'Hare. One minute laterMark Gamble almost got to a loose ball inthe Weymouth six yard box and on 43

minutes a swerving shot from MorganTurner was parried by Steve Boore in theTerras goal for a corner.Eight minutes into the second period wehad the lengthy delay while Gambo re-ceived treatment. Sam Griffin came on forMark and immediately Wimborne got ontop, playing some fast, attacking football.Morgan Turner was played through byFranklyn and then Billy Maybury hit acracking shot from distance but SteveBoore was good enough for both. The Weymouth keeper was called upon tomake saves from Sam Griffin, Carl Preston& Franklyn Clarke until Wimborne got thereward their second half deserved with anequaliser on 76 minutes. Yet anotherMagpie corner was met at the far post byPat Wilson and the scores were level with14 minutes plus added left. Weymouththen had a good spell themselves and cameclose when a header hit Jason's bar andwent over on 84 minutes but it was Wim-borne who almost snatched it at the deathwhen a deflected Franklyn Clarke shot wasbrilliantly pushed round the post by Boore. And so to penalties. Weymouth scored,Billy equalised 1-1. Weymouth scored,Morgan's effort was saved 2-1. Weymouthscored, Carl's shot was saved 3-1. Wey-mouth scored and, suddenly, it was over.A disappointing end and scant reward for asuper Magpie second half display.Man of the match? Steve Boore, ofcourse. But on the Wimborne side, Ihaven't seen Franklyn Clarke play so well.He was immense. Luke Holmes also hadan excellent game; he's the man whomakes things happen for the Magpies. And a word for Callum O'Hare who wasup again Tim Sills and handled him well. But there wasn't a failure in black & white.

Bishops Cleeve 2 Wimborne Town 2 - 17 Oct 2015 - Ken Fergus reports

A 90th minute penalty denied WimborneTown a well-deserved three points at Bish-ops Cleeve on Saturday. Leading 2-1through a Luke Holmes goal on 85 min-utes and down to 10 men since the hourmark, the Magpies suffered heartbreakwhen the ref pointed to the spot after amistimed challenge by Patrick Wilson.Elliot Kennedy drove the ball high into theWimborne net and the Magpies had to set-tle for a point. There was a lively start to the match on abright but chilly day in Gloucestershire. With no Mark Gamble, Steve Cuss optedto play James Stokoe up front with LukeHolmes operating just behind him. WayneCrutcher retruned to a defensive back linealongside Declan Randall, Billy Maybury& Ian Oliver with Jon Blake, FranklynClarke, Sam Griffin & Carl Preston mak-ing up the midfield in a 4-4-1-1 formation.Bishops Cleeve hit the post in the veryfirst attack and then, on minute later, SamGriffin had a shot blocked. Luke Holmescame in for some heavy treatment early onbut, typically, didn't let it affect him.On 11 minutes a Jon Blake back headerfrom a Billy Maybury throw was on targetbut easily saved and on 25 minutes Wim-borne could have taken the lead whenJames Stokoe was first to a poor headerback to the keeper. Stokes' header wentover the home keeper but just wide of thepost. Wimborne were just the better teamat the is point and good play from SamGriffin on the left wing ended with a tameshot at the keeper.Half-time -- Cleeve 0 Magpies 0Wimborne started the second half stronglyand took the lead on 54 minutes. A longthrow from Billy Maybury on the left was

headed by Jon Blake and when the ballbroke to Carl Preston he made no mistake.Wimborne seemed in control now andlooking to increase their lead when, on 61minutes, a moment of madness cost themdear. The ball had gone out for a Cleevecorner when there was an altercation be-tween Franklyn Clarke and a Cleeve de-fender. It ended with a head butt and thatgave the referee no option. Franklyn hadbarely reached the changing rooms whenthe match was level. The corner washeaded back across goal where LukeHitchman was on hand to net.The momentum was all with Cleeve nowand, with 10 men, Wimborne would dowell to hang on for a point. Morgan Turn-er came on for Carl Preston and Wim-borne started to get back into the game, although they had a scare when Cleeve hitthe Wimborne post on 82 minutes.Three minutes later it looked as though theMagpies might take all 3 points. Greatwork by Sam Griffin on the right took himto the byline and his cross along theground found Luke Holmes who netted. That triggered the best goal celebrationwe've seen for a while, although Luke wasbooked for throwing his shirt away! Then came the late penalty and Wimbornewere denied the win. This was a solid performance by the Mag-pies with some good football to admire. My man of the match was Sam Griffinwith Billy Maybury not far behind.Wimborne Town: Harvell, Randall,Crutcher, Holmes (Wilson 86), Maybury,Blake (capt), Griffin, Oliver, Stokoe,Clarke, Preston (Turner 78). Unused subs:Roast, O'Hare, Johnson.

Mangotsfield Utd 3 Wimborne Town 1 - 20 Oct 2015 - Dave Briggs reports

In recent years Wimborne's visits to Man-gotsfield have never borne fruit, and thiswas to be no exception, the Magpies goingdown 3-1. Trailing by three goals after 55minutes Wimborne put in a spirited effort, but could only manage a single goal byLuke Holmes.Steve Cuss made one change from thestarting line-up game at Bishops Cleeve,Patrick Wilson replacing Franklyn Clarkein midfield. There were early chances at both endswith a 30 yard shot by Brad Abrahamswell saved by Jason Harvell and a 40 yardeffort by James Stokoe just clearing theMangotsfield crossbar. A header fromScott Bruce was scambled away by theWimborne defence, while a header by JonBlake was tipped over by Mangotsfieldkeeper Kieran Preston. As the half progressed the home team gotthe upper hand and posed a threat withbreaks down the flanks leading to danger-ous crosses, but the resulting shots wentwide of the woodwork. On 35 minutes Mangotsfield took the leadfrom a right wing corner. Scott Briceevaded the Wimborne defence and pow-ered in a header from the six yard line.Harvell had to make another good lowsave, but on 43 minutes the home teamdoubled their lead from the penalty spotafter a badly timed lunge by Ian Oliverwas judged to be inside the area. The re-play seems to indicate that, while the ballwas inside, the contact with the forward'sleg was probably just outside. Lewis Pow-ell converted with a low shot inside thepost.

At the restart stand-in captain Jon Blake, who had picked up an injury during thefirst half, was replaced by FranklynClarke.Wimborne looked more purposeful asthey tried to get back into the game, butwhen, on 55 minutes, a promising movewas cut out by a defender on the edge ofthe Mangotsfield penalty area, the hometeam made a rapid counter attack andLewis Powell turned the ball into the netfrom close range.Wimborne now had a mountain to climb, but they stuck to the task and looked thebetter team, for the remainder of thematch. A couple of long range shots wenthigh over the crossbar before a headerfrom Stokoe cleared the bar by inches. On 80 minutes Wimborne at last had somesuccess when the home keeper rushed tothe edge of the area and tackled Carl Pres-ton. The ball went straight to Luke Holmeswho, from 35 yards, lifted a beautifullyplaced shot over the keeper and retreatingdefenders to reduced the deficit. But that was to be merely a consolationgoal as Mangotsfield held out for a winwhich their overall play deserved.Wimborne Town: Harvell, Randall,Crutcher, Holmes, Maybury, Blake(Clarke HT), Griffin, Oliver, Stokoe,Wilson (Turner 67), Preston.Unused Subs: Johnson, Roast.

Wantage Town FC (the Freds) have been affiliated to the Berks & Bucks FA since 1892.Prior to this they played in the Swindon & District, North Berks and Reading & DistrictLeagues, achieving success in 1903-04 in the Swindon Advertiser Cup, which theyrepeated in 1907-08 as well as becoming the League Champions.

After the 1st World War, the Freds briefly played in the North Berks League, winning theNorth Berks Cup in 1920 and 1921 and the Championship in 1921-22. After a briefperiod playing in the Reading & District League with no success they then re-entered theSwindon & District League, winning the title in 1933-34.The Fifties was the most successful period for the Club, winning the League in 1952-53(without losing a game) and again in 1955-56, while in 1954-55, the Freds won no fewerthan five cup competitions, including the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup.Since joining the Hellenic League in 1956, Wantage have spent most of their seasons inthe Premier Division, Their best finish in the Premier Division had been third place onthree occasions - 1973-74, 82-83 and 93-94 but have won promotion from Division 1 onsix occasions - as runners-up in 1969-70, 1987-88, 1991-92 (where they set a club recordof 32 games unbeaten) and 1995-96, and as Champions in 1980-81 and 2003-4.Season 2003/2004 was one of the Freds most successful. The First Team won DivisionOne East to regain its position in the Premier League of the GLS Hellenic FootballLeague, and the Reserves finished top of their league, also winning promotion. TheReserves success was repeated in 2004/2005 as they secured the Reserve Division Onetitle. The First Team consolidated their Premier League status, finishing in 10th place. In 2010-11, the Freds won the Premier League title, but despite great effort on the part ofthe Club management, they were not promoted to the Southern League due to groundgrading criteria not being achieved. In the 2012-2013 season, the club achieved theSouthern League Ground grading, but finished runners-up to a very strong Marlow side, and again missed out on promotion. In 2013-2014 the First Team won the Uhlsport Hellenic Premier league title, and withthe appropriate ground grading in place, promotion to Division One (South and West) ofthe Southern League. The Reserves were promoted to Division One (West) of theUhlsport Hellenic League, and the ‘A’ Team squad also gained promotion from theNorth Berks League to Division Two (West) of the Uhlsport Hellenic League.Despite the turbulent start of season 2014-15, which saw a change of management in theFirst Team and a number of key players depart, the First Team retained their position inDivision One (South and West) of the Southern League.Following the installation of the floodlights in 1996, the Club has continued to invest inthe upgrading of the facilities at Alfredian Park. In the past sixteen years the main pitchhas been renewed and a training pitch has been established. Two new and additionalpitches have been formed north of the Clubhouse, enabling five full sized pitches(including the adjacent School pitches) to be used by the growing number of teamssupported by the Club. The old stands have been replaced with a new stand.

With sound management in place throughout the Club, on and off of the pitch, and withgrowing support from the local community, the Club has a unique opportunity to put inplace the foundation upon which it can establish itself at a higher standard of football, ateach level within the Club. This is reinforced with the maintenance of the F.A.Community Charter Standard, which recognises the levels of care, coaching andmanagement, within the Club. The Club also continue to invest in Youth football, including an Allied Counties team, a Junior section, as well as supporting Nurseryfootball (4 to 6 years old), and teams from under 7 to under 15 for boys and girls thuscementing the Club’s growing involvement with football at all levels.

History of Wantage according to WikipediaWantage was a small Roman settlement but the origin of the toponym is somewhat un-certain. It is generally thought to be from an Old English phrase meaning "decreasingriver". King Alfred the Great was born at the royal palace there in the 9th century.Wantage appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Its value was £61 and it was in theKing's ownership until Richard I passed it to the Earl of Albemarle in 1190. Weeklytrading rights were first granted to the town by Henry III in 1246. Markets are now heldtwice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Royalist troops were stationed in Wantage during the English Civil War.In the 19th century, Lord Wantage became a notable local and national benefactor. He was very involved in founding the British Red Cross Society. In 1877 he paid for amarble statue of King Alfred by Count Gleichen to be erected in Wantage market place, where it still stands today. He also donated the Victoria Cross Gallery to the town. This contained paintings by Louis William Desanges depicting deeds which led to theaward of a number of VCs, including his own gained during the Crimean War. It is nowa shopping arcade. Since 1848, Wantage has been home to the Community of SaintMary the Virgin, one of the largest communities of Anglican nuns in the world.Wantage once had two breweries which were taken over by Morlands of Abingdon.Poet John Betjeman lived in Wantage, and jockey Lester Piggott was born there.

THE clocks have turned back and thenights are drawing in. The floodlights areon by half time and the pitches are showingearly signs of wear and tear. So it’s abouttime we look back at some of the memora-ble moments from around the Non-Leaguescene so far this season. Here at NLP HQ, we are always reminisc-ing. Whether it be failed England WorldCup attempts (pick your sport), or wondergoals from years gone by. But this season,we haven’t had to look back very far to seesome stunning strikes.Long-range finishes seem to be the order ofthe season with Bradley Bubb, Scott Daviesand James Poole all netting from distanceover the past three months and instantlybecoming YouTube hits.Bubb didn’t take long to get everyone talk-ing. The opening weekend of the NationalLeague South campaign saw the new Ox-ford City man score on debut. That doesn’t tell half the story though. We’ve all tried it in the park on a Sundaymorning, and for Bubb it paid off.Oxford had just conceded to go 2-1 downagainst Chelmsford City, and the 27-year-old got his name on the scoresheet in spec-tacular fashion, striking an audacious effortstraight from kick-off.The ball dipped, clipping the crossbar on itsway in and clearly surprising Clarets goal-keeper Ashley Timms who, despite a des-perate dive, could not claw the ball away. But while it may have surprised Timms,Oxford captain Darren Pond wasn’t soshocked.Pond said: “It was funny actually becauseFozzy (Oxford City goalkeeping coachAlan Foster) said to me about shootingfrom the halfway line.

“I told him I can’t kick it that far, so I hadto tell Brad to do it and he couldn’t have hitit any better to be fair.”And while Bubb’s effort was almost deadon the halfway line, Wealdstone’s Davieswent one better. In fact, he went about 20yards better. With the Stones already leading Brocken-hurst 3-1 in the FA Cup third qualifyinground, a free-kick from Brockenhurst keep-er Callum Maher, landed kindly at the feetof Davies, midway inside his own half. After taking a touch and lifting his head tosee Maher still rushing back, Davies wentfor goal. Yes, it was an open goal, but from70 yards, it’s not easy to hit the target. For a moment, it looked like the 27-year-old’s effort may bounce over the bar. As itwas, it bounced just before the goal lineand nestled into the net.The FA Cup has been full of goals, and justtwo weeks after Davies’ effort, Poole gotout his best David Beckham impression infront of some of the former England cap-tain’s team mates to send his Salford Cityside through to the FA Cup first round.Poole netted from just inside his own half,to the delight of City co-owners Gary Nev-ille and Paul Scholes, as the Step 3 Ammiesshocked National League side Southport. There will undoubtedly be some morescreamers over the next six months, andwhoever follows Sean Geddes, who scoredwith an audacious rabona attempt last sea-son, to pick up our National Game Awardfor goal of the season is sure to havewowed all.Have we missed any great strikes? Let meknow –[email protected]
