Bill’s BS by Bill Stewart 5/29/16 No rest for the wicked! And Mother Nature is testing us all!

I know that I never was fast, and that I’ m getting slower every day, but lately, I’m having trouble just keeping up. It seems that I have been going to Teen Street Survival School meetings all Spring. Mahoning Valley had the first actual School April 17th with 15 students and fantastic weather. Reed and Sandi Kryder did a great job. Auto accidents are the #1 cause of teen deaths and 1/3 of new drivers will have an accident in their first year driving. The TRSS schools help keep them safe. Earlier that week, I participated in SCCA’s second Solo Safety Steward Webinar to renew my SSS licence. It was easy once I traced down how to go it. Doug Gill with SCCA staff arranges them.

Our Solo Test & Tune at LES April 30th was great. We all shook the cobwebs out and had a great time. Our Solo on Sunday was a battle with the weather. Not bad went to damp and ended early with pea soup fog. Thanks to the fog, the PAX results will not count towards the PAX Championship. With his Honda Civic Si now in HS, Drew Bickel may have a lock on the PAX. I missed our May 22 Solo. I was up at Mosport, now Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, with Pirelli World Challenge. Casey Rand took some great pictures. Check them out on our Misery Bay Facebook site. The Maddens have been bringing quite a group up from Titusville. Great to have you! 11 Novices! Congrates to Tim Mackey on his FTD! and another PAX for Drew! Andy Ferrara seems to have his Miata really dialed in.

In roadracing, our Charlie Campbell has at best, mixed luck. At the first Majors for our Northeastern Conference down at Virginia International, Charlie was on the FP pole, but came in 2 laps short and couldn’t start on Sunday. Next was Summit Point where Charlie’s luck repeated. He was on the FP pole for both races, but only managed one slow lap on Saturday and none on Sunday. He did manage mid-pack finishes in Spec Miata. Bob Mazza had great luck in his STU Celica, with a third on Saturday and a WIN! on Sunday when the two faster cars went off slick track. continued on p. 6

Bill’s BS continued You can see Bob’s victory interview at http://www.scca.com/videos/2027108.

Steel Cities hosted the Cumberland Majors at Pitt Race. The cold, with rain, sleet, and even snow made for a painful weekend. It all started in the very first race, when Charlie in his Spec Miata made a daring move into turn 3 on the first lap. He slid off the wet track and was followed by 5 more Miatas, several into the back of his Miata. In FP, Charlie was on the pole on Saturday, but went off in the rain, but he was able to climb back to finish second. His charge was shortened when a Mini slid into a wrecker and the race was called. With all the delays, Bob Mazza had to leave before his Saturday race. Things got worse on Sunday. In the third race, SCCA multi-champion John Heinricy had the throttle stick open in his AS Firebird and he speared the tire wall in the last turn. As the wrecker got him and the car out safely, the tire wall caught fire. It took over an hour and multiple trips from the local fire trucks to put it out. The following races were cancelled as the wall and the supporting guardrail could not be repaired in time.

With the Runoffs coming to Mid-Ohio this year, their Majors had 475 entries, including Charlie and Bob. It was crazy, it was frustrating. Some rain, huge fields, and fierce competition made for huge challenges. The big bore race had a spin on the pace lap! After Erie Prill went off at the first turn, Charlie had a great dice with FP Runoffs Champ Kevin Ruck and snuck past to win! See his interview at http://www.scca.com/videos/2027984 . Sunday Ruck caught Charlie and he had to settle for a well fought second. Bob was not competitive in a huge STU/STL field. He got pushed off the track on Saturday and didn’t start on Sunday. It was GREAT to see the bottles of Mazza Sparkling Wine in the Winners Circle. I’ll report on the Watkins Glen Majors next month. After that, Charlie will be off

to the last NE Majors at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

In area Pro racing, the IMSA Sahlen’s 6 Hours was up at the Glen over the 4th of July. Indy Car and Pirelli World Challenge appear at the end of the month down at Mid-Ohio, followed 2 weeks later by Trans-Am and NASCAR’s Xfinity series. The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix events have started. Car shows, rallies, charity dinners, autocrosses, and great racing. Our Bill Tobin will be at Pitt Race July 9 & 10 in his TR-6. Former member and chairman of our Meadville Mini Grand Prix races, Ed Cronin will be racing his MGTD at the Vintage races in Schenley Park on the 16th & 17th. Just a gorgeous event. Fantastic old race cars on the park roads and hundreds of very special cars shown on the golf course. Worth the trip!

Great things are happening at Pitt Race. After the Historic races, Track Night in America is on Thursday the 14th and the SCCA Solo Match Tour is there July 15-17. Still room! You must enter by July 10th! I see our Keith Schneider and Bruce Wesley are going. The Northern Ohio PCA has an autocross there on the 23rd and a Drivers’ School the 23rd & 24th. The Allegheny PCA has a Drivers’ School the next weekend. All cars are welcome.

Of course we have our 4th Solo on July 24th and our 5th on August 14th. Will we have some official Out of Region events? Come to the monthly meetings! We have had some great competition and great fun SO--

Get Out and DRIVE! Bill6
