The birth of the Day The European day of languages was created in

2001 by the European Union and the Council of Europe of Strasbourg.

It is celebrated on September 26, and concerns millions of people. There are 45 countries involved.

It was made to diversify the languages learnt in Europe and to prove their utility.

Facts about European languages There are about 225 different languages in Europe,

which is 3% of the world total. A language contains about 50000 words but only a few hundred are commonly used.

There are 3 groups which contain all of the European languages: ► Germanic ,such as German, Dutch, English, Yddish, etc… ► Romano, like French, Spanish, Portuguese, etc...► Slavic, Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian…

How to participate First, you have an idea, such as a game, a

tournament, a European Café…You set up your event… But nobody knows about it!

Then, you go to the EDL’s site, and enter your event in the calendar, and talk about it on newspapers, etc. Now people know it will happen!
