The Estill County Tribune, September 6, 2017, Page 13 The following is the sixth in a series of articles about the community of Cedar Grove and the west-central part of Estill County that have been compiled by Jerry G. Rose and are from information included in his book, “ESTILL COUNTY’S CEDAR GROVE - A Kentucky Community and Its People” by JERRY G. ROSE Cedar Grove Schools -- Part 1 A substantial portion of the information contained in the Schools Section of this series was obtained from a book en- titled Schools of Estill County Kentucky, authored by Edison Joe and Sonja (Crowe) Estes published in 2003by the Estill County Historical and Genealogical Society. Readers inter- ested in additional information on the schools attended by children in Cedar Grove plus information on the nearly 100 other schools scattered all over Estill County over the years should refer to that historical reference. Early Cedar Grove and Clear Creek Schools School age children during Cedar Grove’s early years were fortunate to have a grade school within a short walking dis- tance. The first Cedar Grove grade school was a one-room wood frame building, opened sometime in the late 1800s. It was located close to the Methodist Church. Children from the initial couple of miles of the Sand Hill Road also attended the school. The early Cedar Grove School, believed to have been located on KY 52 between the Cedar Grove Methodist Church and Sand Hill Road. The teacher, back right, is Frank Herbert Gould. Circa 1916. This old Cedar Grove School group was made about 1919 or 1920. Students identified from the left – 1st row, #12 Hubert Crowe; 2nd row, #11 Minnie Jane Covey; 4th row, #1 teacher Henry Witt, #2 Flossie Crowe. This old Cedar Gove School group was made about 1914 or 1917/1918. The students are identified as follows, left to right. Front row – Dewey Finney, Orville Roark, Arnold Isaacs, Harry White, Jimmie Thomas, Kildee Horn, Arnold Lee Bryson, Earl Rhodes, Ernest Dunaway, Alvin Winkler, unidentified, Charles A. White, Harold Finney, Glen Finney, Fred Lunsford, Hubert Crow, Homer Crow, Harold Isaacs, Wallace Isaacs, Ernest Dozier, Bur- man Wilcox; Middle row – Blanche Finney, Olive Finney, Rosy Miller, Bessie Isaacs, Edith Rhodes, Flossie Crow, Grace Noland, Cecil Lun- sford, unidentified, unidentified, Nannie Mae Floyd, Sophie Mae Wilson, Edith Johnson, Willie Grace Taylor, Addie Lee Elliott, Isma Taylor, Beulah Johnson, Jeweldine Bryson, unidentified, Sallie Powell, Beadie Issacs, unidentified, Leota Johnson; Back row—Louie Finney, Mary Rhodes, Roy White (Teacher), unidentified, Jenny Crow, Cecil Dozier, Cecil Rhodes, Paulina Rhodes, Myrtle White, Lula Dozier, Nannie Jo Winn, Mary Wil- cox, Lucy Floyd, Irene White, Thelma Wilson, Roy Noland, Dave Winn, Raymond Rhodes, and Maurice Dozier. A Clear Creek School Group, Elizabeth Witt teacher, only iden- tification provided. The picture was taken outside the wood frame building. The date is prior to 1925 when this Clear Creek School was closed. The Cedar Grove School was closed when the 4-classroom brick West Irvine Consolidated School was built in 1925 in Cedar Grove, combining the small Clear Creek wood frame school in West Irvine and the small Cedar Grove wood frame school buildings. The site selected for the new school was about mid-way between the two schools and was consid- ered to be the first consolidated school built in Estill County. Numerous Indian artifacts were uncovered during the exca- vation for the school, indicating that Indians previously in- habited the area and/or battles were fought on the adjacent hillside. (The New Beginning Fellowship Church now occu- pies the site.) The Clear Creek School building was converted to a resi- dence and Jeff and Carrie (Alcorn) Lunsford lived there for many years. It burned in the mid-1970s. Smokey’s Garage now occupies the site on Shady Lane. The disposition of the old Cedar Grove School building is unknown; perhaps the lumber was salvaged and used for the construction of addi- tional houses. AT Left: The Clear Creek School was converted to a residence in 1925. This picture, made circa 1965, shows long-time residents Carrie (Alcorn) and Jefferson Davis (Jeff) Lunsford in front of the former school and their residence with great granddaughters Kathy and Debora. Their son, Fred Lunsford is on the porch. AT Right: Side View of the School after it became a Residence. Note the windows along the side of the house that remained from the years it was a school building.
