Secret Santa. A phrase that can strike fear into the heart of themost hardened shopper. Buying presents for your friendsand relatives is one thing, but choosing a gift for a randomly-

allocated colleague can be tiresome, especially when given aprice limit. We're here to relieve your pain. Look on it as our gift toyou this Christmas. Here's our list of what to buy, with an idea foreveryone in the office, and nothing costs more than a tenner.

For the office joker get the Football Toilet Trainer (£10) fromJacamo. It's daft AND useful. A bit like him then. Jack Danielsfudge (£5) in butch packaging should appeal to the bloke whoalways orders a whiskey with his beer after work, while sci-figeeks will be thrilled with a Dr Who keyring (£4).

The grown-ups in the office will appreciate a What Do YouKnow About Wine? desk calendar (£9.99), and as it's from theBritish Heart Foundation you'll be giving a bit to charity too. TheHerb Growing Set (£6.97) from Wilkinson will prove popular withthe green-fingered workers.

Fashion-conscious babes will love Marks & Spencer's metallicnail varnish set (£5) and a sequin lip gloss (£6) from BHS, whilethe cheeky ones will have a giggle at the Christmas Crackerpants (£8) from Ann Summers. The more sophisticated womanwill be won over with anything from White Stuff – we particularlylove the Victorian rose socks (£9.95).

Smellies are an easy gift to give. Trevor Sorbie has a Cleanseand Refresh Duo (£6) aimed at the male market, and pretty setsfrom the Body Shop are a winner too – we think its Satsuma set(£10) is particularly appropriate for Christmas.

And then there are the slightly bonkers presents that anyonewill find amusing: a pair of wind-up meerkats (£8) fromDebenhams; Pac-Man wind-up racers (£10) from Matalan; andcrazy cat tights (£8.95) from House of Bath.

There you have it, enough Secret Santa ideas to ensure you'llplease even the fussiest colleague. Now you can relax and enjoythe office party.

Food packs a big punch at a party. Try tochoose somewhere that caters for everyone’staste, think about guests who may bevegetarian, guests with allergies or intoleranceto some foods.

The most important thing is that you enjoyyour party and that it is the topic of staff roomconversation for all the right reasons when youreturn to work.

Other popularthemes include Masked Balls, BollywoodParties, James Bond 007 or Movie Legends. The list is endless so let your imagination runwild; just make sure your theme suits yourvenue and your guests.

Pick a place. Where are you going to have aparty? Will it be a big event or a little gettogether?

Determine a date and time for your party, havea couple of date options when booking yourvenue, remember most people will wantweekend dates so a couple of week night datesshould secure you with a booking and maybearrange with the boss to come to work a littlelater the next day.

Decide on a budget. Are you able to spend alot of money on this party or just a little?Discuss this with anyone else who is going tobe involved and decide on a budget.

Take into consideration who will be attendingthe party. Not everyone wants to dance, noteveryone wants to listen to music, somepeople want to talk and relax.Accommodate for different interests andlevels of social comfort with space planning ifit is possible, and if applicable, different agegroups.

Make invitations, buy them or email them.Pass them out within a reasonable time frameand chase people for a definite answer as towhether or not they are able to attend.

If you are having a function with music pickmusic that you think will be most agreeable tothe spirit or theme of your party and yourguests. Set the mood and tone of the partywith your music, lighting, decoration andattire.

Make sure everyone knows how to get to theparty location, provide everyone with drivingdirections or arrange transport, remembernever drink and drive.

It may be that you want to make speeches, present gifts, awards or prizes at your party ifso it is best to do this earlier in the eveningbefore people have had a few too many drinksand hit the dance floor.

If you exchange presents at your party, SecretSanta is the most popular and cost effectiveway to do this. Decide on a budget, puteveryone’s name in a hat and each persondraws out a ticket, whosever name is on theticket is who you buy a gift for, everyonespends the same and everyone has a present.Try and tailor the present to the person even ifyou don’t know them well, take intoconsideration their age and position in thecompany not every MD wants an apron with anaked body on it! And the quiet lady inaccounts may not appreciate a soap on a ropein the shape of a body part, so don’t get toocarried away.

‘CHEERS’CHRISTMAS

Thirst quenching and uplifting, nothing starts a great night outlike well-made cocktail.

Here are a few tried and testedfavourites from Stephen Hay,of Pure SpiritDrinks.

For those in the know there is an art to creating the best ginand tonic. Of course it all starts with a quality gin whichshould be no lower than 40% Vol.

Fill a tall chilled glass with two thirds ice, a squeeze of freshlycut lime and a generous measure of gin (forget the measur-ing glass and live a little). Top with some quality chilled tonicwater and garnish with some cut cucumber.

No trip to Cuba is complete without sampling one of Hemingway’smany favourite tipples. Fortunately, you don’t have to take a 10 hourflight to Havana to enjoy this classy Caribbean favourite. We favourthe quick ‘shaken not stirred’ route to producing this cocktail.

Simply shake vigorously with ice about 60ml of premium white rum,1 tablespoon of superfine sugar, fresh mint leaves (maybe six toeight), and a generous slug of lime. Pour into a tall glass withoutstraining and top up with chilled soda water. Option of garnishingwith a spring of mint.

  !

    !

One of greatest cocktails, we areslightly partial to this ice cream version!

Place 60ml of cognac and 60 ml of crème de cacao in a blender, with about half a cup of vanilla ice cream. Blend until smooth, pourinto a martini glass and finish with a sprinkle of nutmeg.

Its that simple.

This stylish drink makes a refreshing change to Baileys.

$ # "   "

Once again becoming increasingly fashionable on the contemporarybar scene, this Bourbon-based drink dates back to the late 1800’s.With the growth in small-batch producers, there has never been abetter time to do some muddling and give this cocktail a go.

Use a chilled old fashioned glass and add a soaked sugar cube (withAngostura bitters), a dash of premium bourbon, and combine somelemon zest, and a squeeze of fresh orange.

Muddle all the ingredients together then fill the glass with ice and ahealthy slug of bourbon (also option of adding some soda water). Stiragain and finish with a slice of fresh orange.

Place 1 sugar cube in a champagne flute then soak with Angosturabitters. Pour in about 30 ml of premium vodka, then fill withChampagne, Cava or even English Sparking Wine!

A quick exciting cocktail with a nice kick, just make sure somebodyelse drives the Aston home.

Silly hats and mild flirting are back – it must be time for theChristmas office party. Rid yourself of those grey suits andsensible flats and instead grab a pair of heels, an eye-

catching dress and some sparkling make-up, and prepare to rulethe dancefloor. This is one bit of overtime you’ll definitely enjoy.

Shop racks are positively groaning with party dresses at themoment, but here are some of our favourites, kicking off with a fewtwists on the classic little black dress. River Island has a gorgeousnumber with a floaty mesh and big ripples of material gatheredacross the bodice. With a nod to the florals on the catwalks F&Ffrom Tesco has designed a rose skirt for its LBD at a budget-friendly £30, but if you have some cash to splash then we adoreHobbs’s limited edition military dress (£199).

A big colour this winter is red. For a slinky number go to Georgeat ASDA where it’s stocking a v-necked satin dress that isguaranteed to make eyes swivel your way, as is the floor-sweeping design from Bonmarché. If pink is more your style thenForever Unique has a show-stopping long-sleeved dress withbeautiful trim, or for a subtler number we love Littlewoods.com’spale pink collar dress and the cutesy frill dress fromColourfulFashion.com.

If you relish being the centre of attention then plan a trip to RareOpulence for its creamy, frilled skirt and black bodice creation, pop in to Debenhams if you want to dazzle in sequins or go toVera Mont if you’re aching to show off your shimmering shouldersin a stunning backless dress.

DO make sure all employees are invited, leaving someone out can cause moreproblems than its worth.

DO let everyone know whether or not theparty is only for employees or if partnersor a guest are invited too.

DO decide in advance how much thecompany would like to spend on the bar.If there is a cap on the host bar, give allyour employees a chosen number of drinktickets per person. This keeps it fair andavoids the potential issue of someemployees only making it to the bar afterthe switch to cash.
