Days 1&

2 Day 1: 200-225 km, travel time 7-9 h (with stops) Accommodation: Comandau-Covasna area Day 2: 220 km, travel time 7-10 h (with stops) Accommodation: Sighisoara

■  We will leave Bucharest, drive to Ploiesti and Valenii de Munte, arriving at the footsteps of the Carpathian Mountains. The winding road through villages, rocky valleys and secular beech forest will bring as deep into Siriu Mountains. The narrow trail will cross alpine pastures, where we will meet sheep flocks guarded by dogs, always ready to protect the livestock. Beauti ful sceneries of the Eastern Carpathian Mountains will be breathtaking. We will drive further north, crossing the Buzau river to reach the wildest places and the less inhabited village in eastern Transylvania, Comandau village. Our road will go through a dense forest and cross rivers, through an area densely populated by brown bears.

■  We leave Covasna and drive through the Szekely (Hungarian) villages towards Sf. Ana volcanic lake. We stop at the lake for a short walk which may bring in front of us bears living in the area. We drive around the volcano on the road covered with volcanic ash. Interesting to know: due to the soil enriched with minerals this area is one of the best for cultivating potatoes and corn. In Tusnad spa town we stop to drink some natural sparkling mineral water coming from the ground. For centuries locals use this water for medical treatment. Driving further we reach Racos Gate to visit a d i f f e r e n t v o l c a n o f e a t u r i n g a n extraterrestrial landscape of the lava rock. Nearby we find an azure lake nestled in an old basalt quarry. The last visit for the day will be the 800 years old fortified church in Viscri Saxon village. Then we drive towards Sighisoara, a medieval town, where Vlad the Impaler was born.

■  We start the day walking along cobbled streets of Sighisoara, the medieval town, among houses built in the 15th century and even earlier. We leave the city and drive south through old German Saxon villages in the middle of Transylvanian plateau. On our way, there is an area of 99 mounds which are probably burial grounds from the times before the AD. Our journey will take us to an old watermill, built in the middle of the 19th century with milling stones brought all the way from France. It is in use by local people today! In the afternoon we drive to visit the mountain people, with beautiful views over the mountains around Zarnesti area. We stay over night in one of the villages in the mountains, with local people.

■  Option I:

We go for a walk in the Piatra Craiului Mountain Nature Reserve, looking for bear and wolfs footprints, walking through very wild forest, along the mountain ridge. Lunch at one of the oldest logging in the mountains. In the afternoon walk back to the village passing the Zarnesti gorge.

Option II:

We will drive around the villages, visit Bran Castle, and City of Brasov, from where we return to the village in mountains, to enjoy the evening at our guesthouse

■  We start the day with a visit to the fortified church in Prejmer (UNESCO h e r i t a g e ) , t h e b e s t - p r e s e r v e d construction of this kind in Eastern Europe. Then the road will bring us to the village of Vama Buzaului. There we will stop to see the European Bison. They have been populated in the area with the hope that, one day, they will go back to the wild in the Carpathian Mountains. The last Transylvanian village is ahead before we take the mountain road to Walachia. But first, we go to see a water howler and a trout farm. Crossing the mountains into Walachia, we will arrive at Valenii de Munte, a small town in Prahova County. We will arrive in the afternoon to Bucharest, at the airport or the hotel.
