From our Pastor…

Who were those that adored Jesus? They are known as "Magi", "Wise Men" and "The Three Kings". They are to be distinguished from the shepherds who saw the star over Bethlehem.

They came from the East--from Persia (modern-day Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan). They were most likely priests of the Zoroastrian religion (magi) which paid particular attention to the alignment of the stars. This may be why they are sometimes called "astronomers" and "wise men."

While there is no mention of them being kings in Matthew's Gospel, Psalm 72:11 states, "All kings bow before him, all nations serve him" (Jesus, the king of the Jews).

Also, there could have been more than three of these distinguished foreigners who visited Jesus. However, a Greek manuscript, dated around 500, names them as Balthazar, Melchior and Gaspar.

Balthazar, a 20 year-old Babylonian scholar, is represented as king of Arabia and gives Jesus myrrh, an embalming oil.

Melchior is a 40 year-old Persian scholar, king of Persia, and gives frankincense, an incense.

Gaspar (also known as Caspar), a 60 year-old Indian scholar, is represented as king of India. His gift is gold.

The time and date of the visitation of these men is not clear. Their depiction at the stable with the shepherds is combined for convenience.

The account in Matthew could place the event on the same night, or 40 days later after the purification in the Temple, or even up to two years later when Herod massacred all boys in Bethlehem, two years old and under.

Tradition states that the Magi became Christian on their own or were readily converted by a visiting Apostle. Tradition further says they were martyred for the Faith.

The Epiphany marks the end of the Christmas season and the beginning of Ordinary time.

Thank you to all who prepared and were involved in the liturgies, participated in the music, decorated the church, and any other ministry that was associated with our Advent and Christmas season.

Thank you, too, for all the cards, gifts, treats and well-wishes during this joyous time of year! God’s Blessings,

EPIFANIA Por: Padre Jairo Congote
