The Epiphany of Our Lord (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Savior of the world. The great feast of Epiphany celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the wise men (magi) from the East, together with his baptism in the Jordan and the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee. The Lord presents Himself in a glorious way and humanity is able to experience His majestic presence. Are we able to see the ways the Lord manifests Himself to us? God is always trying to bring us to relationship with Him.

The magi bring all they have and all they are: their material gifts,

yes, but also their love and generosity, a quest for answers, and their prayers and sacrifices. Everything speaks to them of Jesus, and so they offer Him everything. Let us not grow tired of going to Christ. Do not leave it for later. Like the magi, let us be on our way! God bless you!

La Epifanía del Señor (Ciclo C) Reflexión Dominical

La Epifanía es la manifestación de Jesús como Mesías de Israel, Hijo de Dios y Salvador del mundo. La gran fiesta de la Epifanía celebra la adoración de Jesús por parte de los sabios (magos) de Oriente, así como su bautismo en el Jordán y la fiesta de bodas en Caná de Galilea. El Señor se presenta de manera gloriosa y la humanidad puede percibir su majestuosa presencia. ¿Podemos ver las formas en que el Señor se nos manifiesta a nosotros? Dios trata constantemente de que entremos en relación con Él.

Los magos traen todo lo que tienen y todo lo que son: sus dones

materiales, sí, y también su amor y generosidad, su búsqueda de respuestas, su oración y sus sacrificios. Todo les habla de Jesús y por ello se lo ofrecen todo. No nos cansemos de ir a Cristo. No lo dejemos para más tarde. Como los magos, pongámonos en camino. Que Dios los bendiga.

The parish celebrated Christmas with various activities that included Christmas parties for the families in the Grove Outreach and Mission St. Ann, the Christmas novena, and the Masses on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Not to mention the new manger in the plaza, our beautiful manger over the main altar and the image of the Baby Jesus for veneration! The Three Wise Men

According to tradition, the names of the Magi in Greek were Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar. Matthew, in his Gospel, tells of the question which burned in the hearts of the Magi: "Where is the infant king of the Jews?" (Mt 2: 2). It was in order to search for him that they set out on the long journey to Jerusalem. This was why they withstood hardships and sacrifices, and never yielded to discouragement or the temptation to give up and go home. Now that they were close to their goal, they had no other question than this.

You should know that in 1164 the relics of the Magi were escorted by the Archbishop of Cologne, Reinald von Dassel, from Milan, across the Alps, all the way to Cologne, where they were received with great jubilation. On their pilgrimage across Europe these relics left visible traces behind them which still live on today, both in place names and in popular devotions … here in Cologne one of the Magi has been identified as a Moorish King of Africa, so that a representative of the African Continent has been seen as one of Jesus Christ's first witnesses.

In honor of the Magi the inhabitants of Cologne produced the most exquisite reliquary of the whole Christian world and raised above it an even greater reliquary: Cologne Cathedral. Along with Jerusalem the "Holy City", Rome the "Eternal City" and Santiago de Compostela in Spain, Cologne, thanks to the Magi, has become down the centuries one of the most important places of pilgrimage in the Christian West.

Los Tres Reyes Magos

Según la tradición, en griego sus nombres eran Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar. Mateo refiere en su Evangelio la pregunta que ardía en el corazón de los Magos: "¿Dónde está el Rey de los judíos que ha nacido?" (Mt 2, 2). Su búsqueda era el motivo por el cual emprendieron el largo viaje hasta Jerusalén. Por eso soportaron fatigas y sacrificios, sin ceder al desaliento y a la tentación de volver atrás. Ésta era la única pregunta que hacían cuando estaban cerca de la meta.

Como sabéis, en 1164, las reliquias de estos Sabios de Oriente saliendo de Milán y, escoltadas por el arzobispo de Colonia Reinald von Dassel, atravesaron los Alpes hasta llegar a Colonia, donde fueron acogidas con grandes manifestaciones de júbilo. En su peregrinación por Europa, esas reliquias han dejado huellas evidentes, que aún hoy permanecen en los nombres de lugares y en la devoción popular… aquí en Colonia, uno de los tres Magos fue identificado como un rey negro de África, de forma que un representante del continente africano fue considerado uno de los primeros testigos de Jesucristo.

Los habitantes de Colonia fabricaron para las reliquias de los Reyes Magos el relicario más precioso de todo el mundo cristiano y, como si no bastara, levantaron sobre él un relicario mayor todavía: la catedral de Colonia. Junto con Jerusalén la "ciudad santa", con Roma la "ciudad eterna", con Santiago de Compostela en España, gracias a los Magos, Colonia se ha ido convirtiendo a lo largo de los siglos en uno de los lugares de peregrinación más importantes del occidente cristiano.

Getting to Know the Saints Conozcamos a los Santos

ST. JOHN DE MATHA — Born in the Provence region of France, he was educated as a gentleman. Finding his family’s way of life disagreeable, he spent some time living as a hermit before traveling to Paris and earning a doctorate in theology and being ordained a priest. As John celebrated his first Mass, he received inspiration to devote his life to ransoming Christians enslaved by the Moors.

With the help of Saint Felix of Valois, John traveled to Rome and obtained the approval of Pope Innocent III for a new religious community, named for the Most Holy Trinity and dedicated to ransoming captive Christians and the works of mercy. Members of this community traveled to Morocco, Tunisia, and Spain, where they obtained the release of hundreds of captives. Few details of John’s life have survived, but the enduring mission of the Trinitarians attests to the vision and mission of their founder. Saint John de Matha died in 1213 and was canonized in 1666.

SAN JUAN DE MATHA — Nacido en la región de Provenza en Francia, fue educado como un noble. Disgustado con la forma de vida de su familia, vivió como ermitaño un tiempo, trasladándose luego a Paris donde estudió teología y se ordenó sacerdote. Mientras celebraba su primera misa, recibió la inspiración de dedicar su vida a rescatar cristianos esclavizados por los moros.

Con la ayuda de San Félix de Valois, Juan se dirigió a Roma y obtuvo la aprobación del Papa Inocencio III para fundar una comunidad religiosa con el nombre de la Santísima Trinidad, dedicada al rescate de cautivos cristianos y a las obras de misericordia. Los Trinitarios viajaron a Marruecos, Túnez y España donde rescataron a cientos de cautivos. Tenemos pocos detalles de la vida de san Juan, pero los Trinitarios continúan llevando a cabo la misión de su fundador. San Juan de Matha murió en 1213 y fue canonizado en 1666.

Message to the participants of the International Conference on Human Rights, December 10, 2018

Various forms of injustice persist in today’s world. They are nourished by a reduced anthropological vision and by an

economic system based on profit, which does not hesitate in exploiting, discarding or even killing the person. While part of

humanity lives in luxury, another part sees how their dignity goes unrecognized, is despised or trampled upon, and their

fundamental rights are ignored or violated.

I think, among others, on the unborn babies whose right to live is denied; … [in] all those who live under the domination

of suspicion and spite, those who are the object of intolerance, of acts of discrimination and violence because of

their race, ethnic background, or national or religious origins … in how many people suffer multiple violations of their fundamental rights in the tragic context of armed

conflict.

We are all questioned by these grave incidents. In fact, when fundamental rights are violated, or when some are favored in detriment of others, or when they are

guaranteed only to certain groups, grave injustices occur which in turn foster conflict with dire consequences both within nations and between them.

En el mundo de hoy persisten numerosas formas de injusticia, nutridas por visiones antropológicas reductivas y por un modelo económico basado en las ganancias, que no duda en explotar, descartar e incluso matar al hombre. Mientras una parte de la humanidad vive en opulencia, otra parte ve su propia dignidad desconocida, despreciada o pisoteada y sus derechos fundamentales ignorados o violados.

Pienso, entre otras cosas, en los niños por nacer a quienes se les niega el derecho a venir al mundo; (…) [en] todos aquellos que viven en un clima dominado por la sospecha y el desprecio, que son objeto de actos de intolerancia, discriminación y violencia debido a su pertenencia racial, étnica, nacional o religiosa (…) [en] cuantas personas sufren violaciones múltiples de sus derechos fundamentales en el contexto trágico de los conflictos armados.

Ante estos graves fenómenos, todos somos cuestionados. De hecho, cuando se violan los derechos fundamentales, o cuando se favorecen algunos en detrimento de otros, o cuando se garantizan solo a ciertos grupos, se producen graves injusticias, que a su vez alimentan los conflictos con graves consecuencias tanto dentro de las naciones como en las relaciones entre ellas.

St. Hugh has been able to have another successful toy drive with a total of 1,276 toys donated. Thank you so much to all parents and parishioners for their support and generosity that will bring smiles to many children in need of our community. A special thank you to the eighth grade class, Mrs. Salavarría, Ms. Villar, Mrs. Fundora and Mrs. Salazar for organizing all the toys!

On Friday, December 21st, we held our annual Winter Wonderland event. A special thank you to Mrs. Menéndez and Mrs. Orozco for organizing such a magical day for our students.
