FOREWORD
It is my pleasure to introduce to you my first setting of Holy Mass since my Missa Christus Vincit in theSpring of 2000, which I had based on my own Christus Vincit that I wrote in the Fall of 1999. This isalso my first effort at writing a setting of Holy Mass according to the English translation which tookeffect on November 27, 2011, the First Sunday of Advent. This translation is known as the RomanMissal, Third Typical Edition.
One thing I did different in this Mass is that I did not include an Alleluia, Lenten Gospel Acclamation,or Amen. I did not include the Alleluia or Lenten Gospel Acclamation because, though includingthese is a popular move, the Alleluia (or its Lenten replacement) is not a Mass ordinary, but actually aMass proper, with its own verse. The Amen which concludes the Eucharistic Prayer was omittedbecause it is truly sufficient to simply use the single Amen on "do do-re" (or "fa fa-so", depending onwhether you hear it as Ionian or Lydian), and I encourage more widespread use of this simple, yetbeautiful, tone.
Three sources were influenced in my writing, and I must acknowledge those. Melodically, the musicfor the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei are all based on Mass VIII, that is, Missa de Angelis (Massof the Angels), while the music for the Memorial Acclamations are based on their Latin counterparts inJubilate Deo, Pope Paul VI's gift to the Church. Rythymically, the music is influenced by the writingstyles of the late Jan Vermulst, whose Mass for Christian Unity and People's Mass are amongst the farbetter Mass settings written after the Second Vatican Council.
The picture on the cover was given to me by my wife Ann. I've used this picture for a number ofmemorials at her request, and, with a little "surgery", found appropriate use for it here as well.
This latest version of Holy Angels Mass includes a new SATB version of the Gloria, Sanctus, and AgnusDei. In these versions, the congregation can still sing straight through. The Kyrie and MemorialAcclamations remain intact, since they were written in SATB in the first place.
At the back of this edition you will find congregation parts (melody and text only) that you can cut outto form your own worship leaflet with. All I ask is that you keep the credits and copyright noticesintact.
May this musical setting of Holy Mass find its way onto many tongues, singing the praises of AlmightyGod, His Only-Begotten Son, and His gift to us, the Holy Spirit, in one great voice!
CHRISTUS VINCIT, CHRISTUS REGNAT, CHRISTUS IMPERAT!
