The engineer that I have decided to show to the class is an electrical engineer. He currently owns his own company, Mantaro, which he co-founded with a friend (also an engineer).
Time In College and Before:
• He decided to become an engineer at age 8 because he had a fascination for how electronics, in particular, functioned.
• He decided to become an engineer because he was interested in electronics and how things work.
• He never considered another field of engineering
• He attended University of Maryland, and obtained a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees there, and majored in Electrical Engineering.
• He thinks that the amount of time you spend in order to obtain a degree pays off in the long run.
• He was active in the “IEEE” at Maryland where he would hang out with other people in different engineering programs.
Work Experience• He is an Electrical
Engineer.
• He co-founded a company, Mantaro, with a friend.
• He is the chief technical officer at work.
• There were certain ideas that he communicated for products in order to get funding for projects.
• He works about 50 hours a week, and he has flexible hours.
• He can work at home because all his work is in his laptop.
• He works with all different kinds of engineers, but mainly software engineers and a few mechanical engineers.
• Projects last anywhere between 2 weeks and 6 months. Each project goes through multiple phases, lasting somewhere between1 week and a month and a half.
Work Experience• His most recent project is a
3D camera, where he is working on the light protection. He has also recently worked on an antenna for a wireless application and a battery charger for a portable unit.
• The challenges that he faces at work, are that projects can fail.
• The most interesting project that he has done, would be working with control systems.
• The most difficult challenge in the course of his career was to communicate to co-workers that something was not going to work.
• The part of his job that he most enjoys is the problem-solving, and being able to find new and effective solutions to problems.
• His first job out of college was in a Medical Engineering firm that worked to treat cancer with microwaves.
Work Experience• His most memorable
experience would be improving from just another engineer to being recognized as a “top engineer” at his firm.
• His starting salary right out of college was around $40,000.
Personal• He spends his free time
tinkering with things, messing with woodwork, fixing things, and building.
Perry’s Personal Engineering ProfilePerry’s Personal Engineering Profile
After interviewing several engineers, I have decided that I am very interested in becoming a Civil Engineer. The idea of being able to design and fix problems dealing with buildings, bridges, roads, etc. is something that I would definitely enjoy doing.
College Three colleges that I would like to attend are:
University of Illinois, University of Maryland, and Pennsylvania State University because all three offer good engineering programs, along with good business programs. I would also have a chance
to decide between two majors, or combine elements of both, which all
three colleges offer at a high level.
In order to achieve my career goals after graduation, I know that it is necessary to get internships or on-the-job-training in order to set myself up with enough experience to excel after college. By gaining experience at internships I would be set as a prospective employee who already has experience at the job, which would put me ahead of other prospective employees.
• I would like to work for a company where I would have the opportunity to work with experienced Engineers so that I would learn a lot.
• It would be interesting to combine my interest in sports with engineering, for example, helping to design sports venues.
Life at Work
• I project myself working about the same amount of time as the average successful American, between 40 and 50 hours a week. I know to expect stress from deadlines and pressure to deliver successful projects, but I look forward to taking on these challenges.
Leisure For my leisure time, I would like to continue
to follow sports in the same fashion that I do now. I would also like to have time to do my hobbies like playing golf, going to concerts, watching movies, etc. to enjoy my free time.
