Energy is the ability to do work. Any change needs energy: to move an object, to change the temperature, to change the shape or to change the composition.
The main forms of energy are: motion (moving object), chemical (fuels and
food), electrical (a battery), sound (musical instruments), heat and light energy (with the Sun).
The main sources of energy can be divided into 2 groups: non-renewable and renewable energy sources.
Non-renewable energy sources
These are fossil fuels: coal, petroleum and natural gas. They are found under the ground. They were made millions of years ago and millions of years are necessary to make more. Because they are consumed faster than they are made they will run out.
Renewable energy sources / Fuentes de energía renovableThese are the Sun, wind, water and biomass. These energy sources are always available. They will never run out.
o Solar panels receive energy from the Sun/ Los paneles solares reciben la energía del sol.
o Wind turbines receive energy from the wind/Los aerogeneradores reciben energía del viento
o Biomass comes from mostly vegetable matter. When burned, it produces bioenergy.
La biomasa procede principalmente de materia vegetal. Cuando se quema, produce bionergía.
Our lifestyle influences the amount of energy we use. We can save energy by making less waste. To do this, we must follow the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
