Joe Williams is a First Nation Wiradjuri Aboriginal man born in Cowra, raised in Wagga Wagga, NSW Australia. Joe played Rugby League in the National Rugby League competition (NRL) with the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Penrith Panthers and Canterbury Bulldogs before switching to professional boxing in 2009.
As a boxer Joe won 2x WBF World Jnr Welterweight and WBC Asia Continental Championship’s. Although forging a successful professional sporting career, Joe has battled the majority of his life with suicidal ideation and Bi Polar Disorder. After a suicide attempt in 2012, Joe now dedicates his time working to inspire others through motivational speaking workshops and wellbeing camps across the country.
Joe was awarded the Wagga Wagga Citizen of the Year in 2015 for his committed work within the community, mental health and suicide prevention sectors and was named a finalist in
the 2017 National Indigenous Human Rights Awards. In 2018 Joe was awarded Suicide Prevention Australia’s highest honour, a LiFE Award for his excellence in communities within the suicide prevention sector. Joe also feature’s in the global documentary “Suicide: The Ripple Effect” and in 2018 released his autobiography “Defying The Enemy Within”.
Joe talks of dealing with adversities, struggle, resilience, improving your mindset and how when you get knocked down doesn’t mean you’re knocked out. His workshops speak of how leading yourself can help lead others and improving your attitude by 1%, positive energy and small steps, lead to something greater.
