“Battle Raging” When I was growing up and attending church the preacher would remind us a battle was raging. It was the battle for our souls. The pulpit was pounded and supporting scriptures were quot-ed. The battle still goes on and will

never stop. The enemy is very clever and does not rest as we do. While we sleep computers around the world are gathering information. Companies are interested in what we eat, wear, and buy. How we use what we buy is their main concern. They are establish-ing a predictable profile about our society needs. The expanded markets hope to reach all our material and spiritual desires.

You may think you are a private person. This would be true if you lived up a muddy road on the side of a 12,000 foot mountain and made and grew all you needed. Of course, you could not have a telephone or a cell phone or have any neighbors. Electricity would be a no! no! You would have to limit your connections to the outside world. The postman would put your mail in a post office box, if you knew anyone that had the P.O. address. This sounds good, no junk mail. I have left one item out that has invaded our homes, the personal computer (PC). This is the wonderful machine that does not "compute" but lives for e-mail and surfing the

internet (the world-wide web). You turn it on and into the internet system and the world is your oyster; if you like oysters.

The PC is like a child. It requires attention. It needs "medical" care. It needs protection. It will require you to seek out professional people to solve its quirks. It is a daily or weekly task to run scans using expensive software you had to buy after you bought your "cheap" computer. This is necessary to keep hackers from slipping your PC a "Mickey" & putting it on the landfill heap. You have to make sure the adware, the spam ware, the spyware, and the firewall-ware are doing their jobs or every stroke of the keyboard and every file on the hard drive becomes public knowledge. Information can influence the individual about what to place before the "window of our soul. "I saw this in a religious book store this past Christmas season. The gospel now appears in many books, and CDs & videos. I was looking for a replacement Bible. I decided that recovering was more expensive than purchasing a new one. On this very busy mid-morning shopping day in a large store in Manassas, I was amazed by the many translations and versions.

Give me the bible, when my heart is broken, when sin and grief have filled my soul with fear; give me the precious words by Jesus spoken, hold up faith’s lamp to show my savior near.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 makes it clear that the Word was to be a part of the heart and home, not only the altar and temple. How can parents help children grow up to remember their Creator, Eccl. 12:1? God has given parents four great tools.

4. Conspicuous Scripture

“Thou shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them upon the posts of your house, and on your gates” Deut. 6:8-9. When a person wants to remember something important, he puts a string on his finger or puts something out of its usual place to remind him. That is the idea here. When Moses wrote, there were few written copies of the law. Generally, people only heard the whole law read at the Feast of Tabernacles. Therefore, it was vital for them to take opportunities to put important Scriptures where they would see them on a daily basis. Although the Bible is easily accessible to us, we must be no less diligent in keeping the Bible at the center of our homes. God wanted Jewish parents to write select Scriptures on their posts and gates. These were high traffic areas that each person would pass several times a day. This teaching gave birth to the Jewish mezuzah. Technically, the word simply refers to a doorpost (as rendered here and Ex. 12:7; 12:22; 21:6. However, the word came to refer to a square piece of parchment, inscribed with Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21, which was rolled up in a small cylinder of wood or metal and affixed to the right-hand post of every door in a Jewish house. Pious Jews touch the mezuzah at each passing; some kiss their fingers first; other quote in Hebrew, Psalm 121:8 as they touch it. (“The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth.”) God also wanted parents to write his law in scrolls of parchment to be worn about their wrists. Jews inscribed four pieces of parchment with four passages including the following, in order:

Exodus 13:2-10 (relating to remembering coming out of Egypt);

Exodus 13:11-16 (“When your son ask you in time to come, saying, What is this?);

Deut. 6:1-8 (the “Shema,” here); Deut. 11:18-21 (relating to teaching children). These were enclosed in a square case or box of tough skin. Placed on the forehead with thong or ribbon. We should today by all means possible make the Word of God familiar to our children. It is the most powerful force for good at our disposal Rom. 1:16. How can we keep Scripture always before our eyes into modern lifestyles? We can put scriptural posters, pictures, in our children’s rooms, so they can read them as they wait to fall asleep. They can wear T-shirts or hand bands with Scriptures which may make a long time impression. We can text or email them Scriptures

to read each day. Memorizing verses is a great way as well, on a weekly basis. Boys can remember sports stats of their favorite teams. Teens know the lyrics to every song on the radio. They memorize facts and dates in school, if they become interested in memorizing

scripture, they can do so. The more we can get into our minds and our children’s thoughts, on memorizing Scriptures the better our spiritual life will improve. Why should children memorize Scriptures? It keeps them ready for all occasions. 2 Tim. 3:16-

17; 2 Pet. 1:3 It helps them resist temptation. Matt. 4:1-11 It helps them make wise decisions! Psm. 119:97 It strengthens and calms them when under stress.

Isa. 40:31 It strengthens them in sadness. Jer. 15:16;

Prov. 22:18 It helps them when teaching others. 1 Pet. 3:15

We should endeavor by all means possible to make the Word of God familiar to our children.

Remembering God in the Home

Parents do make a difference!
