Cw7: Would you tell us a l i t t l e a b o u t y o u r background and interest in aviation?

JC: My experiences in aviation have not left the passenger cabin! So far I h a v e n o t h a d a n y expe r i ence fly ing an airplane off the computer. My first experience on a flight simulator was in Google Earth, and I think that my interest in aviation starts there. After that I began to play some aviation games and became involved with this world, going then to flight simulators, starting with Flight Gear, then working up to Microsoft Flight Simulator 9, then to FSX , and finally, on to X-Plane. My professional interest contributes to this. I'm a student of physics and I am very interested by the development of new

technologies, especially in areas related to aviation and space.

Cw7: What sparked your interest to develop your first airplane for a flight simulator?

J C : I s t a r t e d d o i n g paintings for airplanes. Then I changed simulators and got into X-Plane.

Flying in X-Plane, I saw that it was a very good simulator, but for me it had a big problem. In X-Plane, I felt the need to do a good airliner, a type of aircraft that I missed a lot. That was what most motivated me to start working on the Embraer 190, a fault perhaps as I could not fly an airplane like this yet in X-Plane.After starting the project, some good airliners were released, for example the x737

v4, but the number of this type of freeware aircraft is still small in X-Plane.

Cw7: Can you describe the challenges you faced as you worked on that first aircraft file, and how you overcame those challenges?

JC: My first plane is the Embraer 190, the plane that I 'm working on now.T h e m a i n c h a l l e n g e w e faced and still face i s t h e l a c k o f e x p e r i e n c e . I l e a r n e d t o d o mode l ing wh i le working on the aircraft; in fact, I have learned almost everything while working on the development of this aircraft. That ultimately makes the work very slow, since I spend as much time studying about the development tools as I do developing the aircraft. This is, I think, the main problem of the development of this aircraft.Other problems, like getting technical references, is also a difficult part of the project.

Cw7: Are there any organizations or people that have shaped your outlook about aircraft development? Are there any other current developers you admire?

JC: My outlook about development has been shaped by personal thoughts and the experience I have had with other aircraft in X-Plane. I am seeing a lot of good projects this year, and I want to make the Embraer 190 project as good as any I’ve seen; that means a good flight model, a good external model, a good panel.

There are a lot of developers that I admire. In particular, the people at QPAC with their A320-232 FBW, the EADT team and their x737, the people of XPJets, and others. I admire some payware developers too, specially Dan Klaue with his ERJ-140 and Heinz Dzuirowitz's new 787.

Out of the X-Plane a r e n a , I a l s o a d m i r e t w o Brazilian scenery d e v e l o p e r s f o r Microsoft Flight Simulator: Roberto Z a n o l l i a n d Gustavo Luna. We will use the work of these scenery developers for the

basis of expanding XPBR’s sceneries of Brazil.

Cw7: With what you now about the design process, what advice would you give someone contemplating developing their first aircraft?

JC: Do not be afraid! When you look at beginning a project you think that you never will be able to do an aircraft like that, but you can if you keep at it. Learn that you can do a good aircraft.A lot of tutorials are available on the internet to teach you th ings about a i rcraf t development.

And, if you are having problems on the development get help on the community forums. There are a lot of other good developers ready to help you.

Cw7: What trends do you see in the X-Plane flight sim environment building over the next

few years, and what plans do you have to meet these developments?

JC: Unfortunately, there are few large game developing corporations looking at flight simulator development. The biggest corps of s o f t w a r e / g a m e s deve lopment a re simply not interested in flight simulators, o n l y f o r m a k i n g games based on fighter flights. This reduces the g e n e r a l fl i g h t s i m u l a t o r development to fighter games or specific professional simulators with cockpits for airliners, those not available to the general community. From this perspective there are only two alternative active projects: the X-Plane Flight Simulator and the Flight Gear project. Projects started by other companies have been stopped by this disinterest of the market.Looking at these two projects, the future for them seems very good. Like the other projects that could compete with they are stopped, in the future the two current projects will be the only adapted to new techno log ies and updated, giving then the preferences among add-ons developers. This will put these softwares on the first on the list of preferred simulator games among the costumers.

Cw7: We have been following developments of your EMB-190 and think your first screenshots are spectacular. Can you tell us about the real EMB-190 and why you chose to make this aircraft? How difficult has it

b e e n t o g e t i n f o r m a t i o n a n d technical data about the EMB-190 that you will use in your acf file? What type of information is most useful, and w h a t t y p e s o f information are most d i fficu l t to work with?

JC: The real E190 is one of the biggest airplanes made by Embraer, second only to the E195. This aircraft is designed to carry approximately 100 people, and is a competitor to the Boeing 737-300 -400 and -500 and for Airbus A318 and A319. This aircraft has high efficiency and is a silent aircraft, making it a good choice for regional and domestic flights. In Brazil this aircraft is

u s e d o n l y f o r 2 companies and for t he B raz i l i an A i r Force, but in the E u r o p e a l o t o f companies use the e-jets family, mainly in domestic flights.These aircrafts are announced on Paris Air Show in 1999 and

developed until 2002, when the Embraer starts the aircraft production. The initial name of this aircraft was ERJ170-100, ERJ170-200, ERJ190-100 and ERJ190-200. But the Embraer decide to change the names to E170, E175, E190 and

E195 to remove the “regional jet” from the name. Now there are 51 airlines around the world flying with the Embraer E-Jets. Only in the United States are 6 airlines operating with this aircraft. My choice to develop th is a i rcraf t came abou t f o r seve ra l reasons.First, it’s an airliner that I missed in X-P l a n e . To o , t h e Embraer E-Jets are very good aircraft, and they are produced in Brazil. The design of this aircraft contributed to my choice, too. The plane is very beautiful and it was one of the first with the windshield following the fuselage design (what Boeing has only just applied in the 787 and Airbus in the A350).Another reason is that I have flown on this aircraft many times, and in making the E190 I will have the complete basis for building all the other members of the e-jets family (E170, E175, E190, E195), which is certainly one of our future plans.Translating it all, I love this aircraft!

C w 7 : H a v e y o u assembled a team to finish this aircraft, or wil l you finish the project by yourself?

JC: I have a little team to finish this aircraft. Now are 2 modelers, 1 programmer and 1 panel designer on the team. On this step, only the modelers are working, I on the external model and Josenildo on the cockpit, finishing this work

the other 2 people will work on the panel and plugin. We will receive some collaboration of other developers to make the liveries and develop plugin.

Cw7: Will the EMB-190 b e f r e e w a r e o r payware? Have you set a price yet, if payware?

The E190 w i l l be freeware. The XPBR team will release only freeware add-ons, this is the firm idea of the team.

Cw7: When is the expected release date?We don't have a release date yet, but the work won’t be finished before November. I think the project is still really in the firsts phase. Still, we hope to release the final version before the end of the year.

Cw7: And what is your thinking about going pro and developing a payware aircraft?

JC: I don't want to m a k e a p a y w a r e aircraft. This is for me just a hobby and I will s t a y o n l y i n t h e freeware development.

Cw7: Can you tell us about X-Plane Brazil? How it came about? What activities you

enjoy together?

JC: X-Plane Brazil started with the initiative of two long-time developers to make time to develop add-ons together. The team has

4HTTP://XPLANE10.WORDPRESS.COM/

incorporated other solo developers from another flight simulator forum in Brazil. Some members have left the team after some time, and we are receiving other new members on the team. Our new team is in still in it’s beginnings even so, and has been together only one month, but we expect to stay big in the future, with more members and more release capacity. As the work is still in the beginning, we are organizing the team, and starting the development of new projects. The development is using an SVN repository manager, where everyone can easily contribute to the development of any part of the job.The current work of the team is: make a library object for our updated Brazilian sceneries, making Brazilian liveries for existing aircraft, and develop the E190 and E175 with Paul Vajda.

Well, it looks like thereʼs a new team in town! These are well-rendered images, and it looks like weʼll finally have a nice freeware EMB-190 in X-Plane, and before the end of the year, too. Weʼve included more images below, so scroll on down and take a look. And of course, weʼll keep you updated as the 190 gets ready for release.

The details are almost all in place and looking good! The landing gears and winglets already look excellent, and the cabin doors are 3D models, not textures… always a good sign that the developer is paying close attention to the details.
