6 2015 BWHA Annual Report

PRESIDENT’S REPORT An annual report is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the year gone by, and 2015 certainly served up many events and experiences to enable us to do this.

The year started with a significant change to the way we register players, and the methods of payment, with an impact on players, club officials, and BWHA staff. Discussion and decisions around the use of the IMG database consumed much time and effort, until the way forward was clear and agreed. It highlighted the need for us to be able to communicate changes clearly with members, and the need for multiple ways to do this.

Our winter fixture season was as busy as ever, with the following activity:

• Ran hockey fixture competitions for juniors, seniors and masters, at four turf venues and two grass venues, for over 3,300 registered players. Player numbers have increased marginally over previous years, with growth in junior numbers making up for the slight decrease in senior numbers.

• Sent 20 teams to compete at State Championships for Super League, Opens, U18, U15, U13 and Masters as well as 4 teams competing in the U11 Southern Cross at Downey Park.

We have seen an increasing number of complaints arising from sideline spectator behaviour, and will need to work more closely with clubs in the coming year to manage this better. It is not, and cannot be, the sole responsibility of BWHA management committee to police sideline behaviour – clubs must manage their spectators, reinforce good behaviour, and deal with bad behaviour. We all need to work together to do this more effectively.

We continue to work with Brisbane Hockey Association (BHA) and Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club (KWSHC) to administer the Brisbane Hockey Management Group (BHMG), which manages the Burringbar turf facility. The increasing age of this facility and its infrastructure, together with the ever-increasing costs of water and electricity, means that insufficient funds are able to be retained for future turf replacement, and alternate sources of funding will need to be sought. Part funding secured for a second turf is also at risk if proposed grant submissions are unsuccessful.

The popularity of Hockey Zone, with the filming of hockey games, and coaching and umpiring techniques and skills, continues to grow, and thanks to Paul Mills and his team for their commitment and dedication. We were again able to film JT games thanks to sponsor Powell Industrial, and we welcomed our new Division 1 sponsor Play Works – your support is appreciated. Hockey Zone is a considerable investment by both BWHA and BHA, but we do this to ensure that hockey is exposed to as broad an audience as we can afford.

We persevere with our efforts to construct turf fields at Downey Park and further details are available in the Vice-President’s report.

Member Development Manager Regie Fisher, and Development Officer Amy Ryan continued their member development programs with players across all age groups, and umpires. The positive feedback we have received from a wide range of members continues to reinforce the success and popularity of these programs.

We can be very proud of our collective achievements, and the way we have reacted to opportunities and challenges. I would particularly like to thank all the members of my management committee for their efforts, consideration, passion, and good humour. To our dedicated volunteers at club and association level – thank you, because without you we would not be able to exist. And last but certainly not least, my sincere thanks to Kath Proctor and all the BWHA staff for their ongoing support and tremendous work effort.

Dr Karin Walduck

7 2015 BWHA Annual Report

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

In last year's report I noted that hopefully there would be some action on construction on the turf at Downey Park this year. Unfortunately this is not the case. Working with Council has been very difficult and almost paralysing at times. It has now been more than three and a half years since this process started and we still do not have an outcome.

I continue to work with a great group of people on this project: Tony Battams (Solaris Designs), Tony Loveday (RMA Engineers), Rob Kirkwood (STI Polytan) and Hannah Tohill (Wolter Consulting Town Planning).

There are meetings scheduled with Council in coming months that hopefully will see some progress on the turf development.

I will finish my report this year with a similar hope to that of last year: that by the end of 2016 that we have something much more substantial to report and perhaps even some action on construction on the park. Christine Blanchard

SECRETARY’S REPORT

The 81st Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday 25th November 2014 and was well attended. Numerous awards recognising the valuable role volunteers play in the growth & development of our association were given out with special mention to our Junior Section Volunteer of the Year Judy Hartnett and Senior Section Volunteer of the Year Christine Blanchard. We also welcomed new Life Member Meg Brodie to this outstanding group.

Following six Management planning meetings in October and November and in consultation with clubs via a questionnaire a number of rules were updated, amended or introduced for 2015. We also learnt that Hockey Queensland (HQ) would be taking over the collection of HQ fees with direct online registration on the Hockey Australia database. While all can appreciate the importance of an effective database, the poor information, structure and introduction caused us considerable angst and upset. We hope better planning will minimise further distress going forward. Bron Morris came back onto the Management in 2015 and took on the database portfolio, as a hands-on club administrator and with professional skills in the area, she has been a strong advocate for BWHA dealing with the database issues with HQ. Thank you Bron and Sue Barsby for looking after this challenging area.

The Management Committee met in December to finalise portfolios, appoint convenors to committees and finalise preparation for season 2015. Our website only 12 months old failed and the builders disappeared, so urgent action was required to have a new site built and ready for 2015. Thank you to Peter Poulos from OSNIC and Lisa from the office for putting this together very quickly.

During 2015 we saw two helicopters decide that Downey Park was a nice place to land, while the Blackhawk landing on Field 1 to deliver an injured soldier to the hospital was understandable, the landing of a private helicopter on field 12 to allow a rugby union player to get to training at Ballymore was a little more difficult to understand. On both occasions some funds were provided to BWHA to repair the damage caused, but we hope better options will be taken in the future.

Our January Meeting saw Administration Folders given out to clubs, this is to be the last year this is done, as all forms can be accessed via the BWHA webpage, and completed electronically, this will save much time and energy.

During February major preparation was underway for grading of turf divisions, with such limited turf available in Brisbane all positions were hotly contested. This will continue to be a major area for our association especially in relation to Juniors and training, until a turf is at Downey Park and others introduced in the Brisbane region. Christine Blanchard has worked tirelessly again this year to make progress on a turf at

Page 8: THE EIGHTY FIRST ANNUAL REPORT OF BRISBANE … · BRISBANE WOMEN’S HOCKEY ASSOCIATION I. NC. OFFICE BEARERS ... 2012 Robyn Andersen (15) - 2011 Val Bartlett (10) - 2003 Wendy Stephens

8 2015 BWHA Annual Report

Downey Park, her report will give more detail. It is important that we are not swayed from our resolve to have a turf at the home of Brisbane Women’s hockey – Downey Park.

Turf fixtures commenced at the end of March this year, and ran through with very few interruptions as requested by clubs, the season was very successful with 8 different clubs competing in turf divisional grand finals, congratulations to all winners. Thank you to Jenny Heron, Lesley Bennett and all members of Umpire and Technical and Grading and Fixture committees for your hard work and thoroughness.

Working Bees in March saw the Downey & Rasey Park facilities prepared for fixtures in April, thank you to all clubs for your support of this. Volunteers Meg, Andrew, Kris, Ange and casual staff Noala and John do an enormous amount of work all year round, well done and thanks. By the start of 2016 we will have 7 fields under irrigation which should improve the quality of the fields, however as with all new infrastructure the cost of using it will have an impact on fees, water for the irrigation is not cheap and will add another cost into our budget. The BCC is introducing a water harvesting project over the next 12 months and we hope this will limit the cost of water going forward. The grass fixtures commenced in April and the park was full every Saturday catering for every level and age in our sport – well done to all who played, officiated or supported in 2015.

Our relationship with both Downey Park Netball and Brisbane Softball Association is strong as we all work together to ensure this wonderful park is loved and cared for. It will always be difficult for softball & hockey to live totally harmoniously due to the different field requirements, but our working together is getting better results every year for both of us. Parking is also an issue with Netball and Hockey playing together on Saturdays in winter and the BCC’s decision to change “nose-in” parking to parallel parking on Noble Street.

Unfortunately a Judiciary was held this year requiring the involvement of many volunteers in the process, thank you to all for your diligence and commitment. We introduced signage around the park to try to encourage appropriate behaviour by members and supporters. It is sad that this type of reminder is necessary. Thank you to all volunteers who put on “Pink Vests” and walked around the fields at the junior games to encourage appropriate behaviour by members and supporters – again this should not be necessary, but unfortunately is. We had a small group take on the Junior Committee role this year and they were a great asset, it would be beneficial if every club could have a representative on this committee to spread the load. Well done to Leisa Campbell and all on the committee for your hard work and dedication in 2015.

Discussions have been held with HQ to determine if Brisbane Hockey could or should take over the running of the SHC. We are ready and willing to discuss this, but need HQ to come to the table, hopefully we will have a clear indication by 2016. HQ is also undertaking an audit of hockey facilities across the state, so a plan for future development can be prepared. All clubs have been asked to submit information so this report is complete and becomes an important and useable document for the future.

HockeyZone continued to grow in 2015, funded by BWHA & BHA, the word is spreading and the hard work of Paul and Joshua Mills and diehard commentators has seen the standard and options improve each year. In 2015 Hockey Australia have come on board and HockeyZone provided live streaming of all AHL games – well done Paul on all your hard work. A full report is available later in this report. Thank you to all our sponsors and Sonya Fisher for managing this area for BWHA. Looking after the finances, grants and HockeyZone is a major effort and we really appreciate Sonya’s expertise and commitment.

We had a new canteen convenor and bar attendant this year. Thank you to Robyn and John for your assistance with providing quality service to our members and spectators. Lorraine again manned the BWHA office on Saturdays, thanks Lorraine and Bruce for your weekly assistance and enthusiasm.

Again a few storms caused havoc for all of Brisbane. First damage was done to our ceiling in the upstairs toilets and then minor flooding downstairs. The remediation work undertaken over the past five years has held us in good stead, from 2009 where $150,000 damage was done to this year where $5000 damage was

Page 9: THE EIGHTY FIRST ANNUAL REPORT OF BRISBANE … · BRISBANE WOMEN’S HOCKEY ASSOCIATION I. NC. OFFICE BEARERS ... 2012 Robyn Andersen (15) - 2011 Val Bartlett (10) - 2003 Wendy Stephens

9 2015 BWHA Annual Report

done, what a difference planning and risk management can make. Again our volunteers and staff put shoulders to the grind stone and had us back up & running in quick time. Thank you to all involved. Like most playing fields and parks in Brisbane Downey Park is on a flood plain, but it can and has been managed since 1959.

This year saw a number of “themed” Council Meetings to inform and engage our members and encourage them to provide clear directions for the association. The first meeting saw Sue McLatchey from the Dept of Sport & Recreation attend to give information on applying for grants and working with the department to improve clubs. The second was a lively discussion on the Points Cap and Dual Registration system. A number of rules have been changed for the 2016 season, the third meeting discussed the current turf grading system, again lively discussion has led to a trial of unlimited teams in the senior turf competition for 2016.

We again developed, trialled, selected, trained and toured 20 representative teams this year. What a major workload for our staff and volunteers. Thank you to all involved, the results and statistics are later in this report. Thank you to Regie, Amy & Sue for all your hard work, to all selectors, coaches, managers and umpires, you are all vital to make this happen for our players – well done. We also continued to offer development opportunities for goal keepers, masters and grass level players, all were very well supported, thank you to the coaches for their time and expertise.

Kris Birch continues to learn and develop on Management, she has used her professional skills this year to create position descriptions for our volunteers’ roles, which we hope will allow members to volunteer more easily in the future. Thanks Kris for your enthusiasm, skills and professionalism.

Thank you to our Archive Committee, Life Members and long-term supporters for continuing to work for BWHA, documenting the important history we have and organising social events. Special thanks to Elma, Shirley, Joyce, Jenny, Faye & Bev.

Our sincere condolences to all our members who have suffered loss this year, and we congratulate those who have experienced great joy and exciting events. The hockey family is a large and varied one and we share in the highs and lows of our extended family.

Thank you to the many volunteers that support our sport, especially to our President Dr Karin Walduck who works continually for the development of hockey in Brisbane and Queensland. It is not unusual to see Karin behind the bar or the kitchen cooker or sweeping floors & picking up rubbish, and then engaging and negotiating with politicians and sponsors promoting our sport at the highest level, she is active across all areas of our sport and brings a unique skillset to BWHA. Thank you to the staff members casual, part-time and full time who all provide a great service to our sport. Thank you to the government departments and sponsors who allow us to grow and develop with support, both financial and in-kind.

Kathleen Proctor

TREASURER’S REPORT

Thanks again to the BWHA office and in particular, Kath Proctor, for the continued smooth financial operation of the Association. We are fortunate to have such a professional team in our office that provides great service to our members. This is highlighted by both the completion of the Financial Statements in a timely and satisfactory manner and the continued strong financial position of the Association.

A summary of the 2015 Financial Performance of the Association follows: • Net Assets decreased slightly to $684k • Income fell slightly to $1.312m (partly due to HQ Registration fees being paid direct to HQ in 2014/15 –

in the 2013/14 FY $111.9k was collected by BWHA and remitted to HQ) • Expenses increased slightly to $1.331m

Page 10: THE EIGHTY FIRST ANNUAL REPORT OF BRISBANE … · BRISBANE WOMEN’S HOCKEY ASSOCIATION I. NC. OFFICE BEARERS ... 2012 Robyn Andersen (15) - 2011 Val Bartlett (10) - 2003 Wendy Stephens

10 2015 BWHA Annual Report

• The impact of an unbudgeted water bill of $19.7k was a small loss of $19k • Grants - we will continue to submit grant applications to assist replace assets, upgrade facilities, improve

operations and deliver sustainable solutions for the Association. In 2015: o We lodged one grant/expressions of interest with the Qld Govt for $1.5m for an artificial turf at

Downey Park; and o We were successful with a Qld Govt (Get Playing) grant for $73k grant for irrigation and levelling of

Rasey Park and Field 13 with $39.6k received during the financial year for work on Field 13 (work on Rasey Park was commenced after the end of the season)

Sonya Fisher

HockeyZone

• Hockey Zone is a joint initiative between BWHA and BHA o Brisbane - in 2015 we continued with Aurora (Foxtel) and Briz31 and we also undertook

Livestreaming of featured games each week with two Div 1 games being covered from the Brisbane Women’s and Men’s competitions. With the assistance of Powell Industrial, who again sponsored the J1 Boy’s and Girl’s competitions, we were also able to televise two JT1 games (BWHA or BHA) each week

o AHL 2015 - under an agreement that was struck with Hockey Australia a few weeks before the championships, HockeyZone covered both the Men’s and Women’s AHL championships in 2015 and provided coverage for TenPlay, which was a step up from previous years where HockeyZone was only contracted to cover either the Men’s or the Women’s AHL championships and generally only the final days. Thanks to Tom Whetton and Peter Smith for being the “voices” of the AHL – you did us proud!

o It is our intention to continue with Hockey Zone in 2016 particularly given the closer working relationship with Hockey Australia

VOLUNTEERS It was identified in 2014 that the limited information about BWHA positions that was available may have deterred people from nominating for a volunteer position within the association. In an attempt to resolve this confusion, position descriptions have been drafted and are in the final stages of approval by the Board of Management. These position descriptions will form part of the standard bundle of documents that are sent to clubs, and people who enquire about volunteering, when nominations open in 2016 and beyond. It is hoped that this will increase volunteer participation in the years to come. BWHA did not have a Junior Committee in 2014, and the practice of asking clubs to assist with setting up at Downey Park and Rasey Park was implemented to minimise the workload for members of the Board of Management. Duties were allocated by using a duty roster, which minimised the frequency and workload for all involved. This practice enabled parents and members of clubs to experience first hand the requirements for the Junior Committee roles and, as a result, sufficient interest was generated to enable a Junior Committee to be re-established this year. The Junior Committee has worked well together and we are

hopeful that we will continue to have a Junior Committee next year. To minimise the workflow for our volunteers, we have retained the duty roster on a permanent basis and BWHA thanks all clubs who have gone above and beyond on their rostered duty days. Hockey would not happen without our volunteers, and the efforts of all have not gone unnoticed. The use of the “pink vests” has also worked very well. Reports received from clubs indicate that people are actively seeking out the “pink vests” on game days to assist with the enforcement of safety rules and any disagreements that arise on the day. The “pink vests” are here to stay, and we thank all people who have donned a pink vest in the past for their assistance with making this initiative such a huge success. COMPLIANCE While all of our volunteers that work with children hold Blue Cards, we did not have a system in place to monitor the currency of Blue Cards. A Blue Card register was established this year, and will continue to be updated in the future. It would be appreciated if all volunteers could provide the association with their Blue Card details, if they haven’t done so already. It is also important for volunteers to keep an eye on their Blue Card expiry dates to ensure that they remain current. Due to the onerous requirements related to child protection it is essential that the association maintains a proactive approach, and not a reactive approach, in this regard. To protect our volunteers in the unlikely event of an accident or injury, we require clubs to ensure that all volunteers are signed in when they are assisting on a club’s duty day. This is to ensure that accurate records are maintained for insurance purposes. Clubs have been very diligent in this regard, and we ask that this diligence be maintained. Industrial policies are currently being developed, and they will be made publically available upon completion. Some of the policies that are being developed include:

- Workplace bullying and harassment; - Workplace health and safety; - Operation of BWHA vehicles; and - Equal opportunity.

COMPETITIONS PORTFOLIO REPORTS COMPETITIONS: FIXTURES & GRADING TURF

In February affiliations were called for and 50 teams nominated for our 5 turf divisions. During the grading process, 1 team withdrew leaving 49 teams thus ensuring that there were 9 teams in division 1 and 10 in each of the other 4 divisions.

Of the 11 teams that nominated for Division 2, the committee felt that the new nomination did not have enough depth or new higher graded players to warrant a grading game, Division 2 stayed the same as 2014.

A round robin night was played to finalise the numbers in Division 3 and the teams were selected as below -

Ascot Commercial Easts Kedron Wavell QUT

Redcliffe St Andrews South West United University Valley

After Division 3 was finalised then Division 4 and 5 were as affiliated. Some divisions were very close and came down to the last fixture before semis could be organised. Congratulations to all teams who played in the final series and to the winners of all divisions.

Thank you to Deb Wark and Di Brodie, my fellow members of the Grading Committee, let’s see what 2016 affiliations bring. Jenny Heron

DOWNEY PARK – GRASS

With 43 teams nominating for 5 grass divisions, the grass fixtures and grading committee opted to use 2014 information to place the teams in the following divisions: 6 in DP1, 9 in DP2, 8 in DP3 and 10 teams in both DP4 and DP5. While DP4 &DP5 are oversubscribed, not enough teams are nominating for DP1. With only 6 teams in the division, clubs felt they were continually playing the same teams. To fit the competition in, DP1 and DP3 played additional games on the June long weekend and during the State Masters tournament leading to problems supplying umpires and filling teams. Luckily there were no weather interruptions. Thanks to the grounds staff Noala Gordon and John Robinson and volunteer Andrew Brodie for their hard work during the season to keep the fields mown and marked. Thanks to the fixtures and grading committee for their hard work in 2015.

MONDAY MASTERS

Thank you to all the over 35 women playing in the Masters competition for providing such a wonderful competition this year. With 21 teams nominating and complaints from 2014 with the combined MM1 and MM2 format, the Masters Fixtures and Grading Committee again went with 3 divisions for the 2015 season. As in previous years only 4 teams nominated for MM1. This isn’t enough teams to maintain a viable competition so Redlands were promoted to MM1. MM2 and MM3 began the season with 8 teams in each division. It was planned to use all four turf venues at this stage. BWHA applies rules for players, who play in turf or grass as well as masters competitions. One team in MM3 applied for too many exemptions, so the team was promoted to MM2 half way through the first round, leaving odd numbers in all Masters divisions. It also meant that the competition could be run using only 3 venues, releasing the SHC for additional training time.

UMPIRES & TECHNICAL

New rules were introduced this year. The first two, automatic two minute suspension for a green card, 5 minute suspension for a yellow card and sending the defenders to halfway when breaking, had been played successfully for a number of years, so for BWHA this change was no different. Initially the change to where the long corner was taken caused confusion for both players and umpires, as the umpires were unsure how to signal. On advice from Hockey Queensland, for the first time BWHA had different rules for Div 1-3 turf and for DIv 4-5, grass and juniors. Playing the ball with the stick above the head in general play was not considered a suitable rule for the lower divisions, both for players and umpires. Players and umpires had to cope with the removal of the 5m dotted line around the circle, which cut down on the work for the grass ground staff. Each year BWHA provides technical staff to run all turf games, with the help of club technical officials. Thank you to the paid staff and volunteers who assist in the running of the competition.

Each weekend, ninety umpires are required to turn up to ensure the matches are completed. The grass and turf umpire stewards are tasked with allocating the umpires. Thanks to Judy Hartnett for her great job of allocating grass umpires. There were no nominations for turf umpire steward this year, so Kath Proctor, the Secretary of BWHA, already busy with her own job, had this additional task. Thank you very much Kath for stepping in to ensure the competition could proceed. It wasn’t made easy with clubs reallocating umpires after all her hard work in the first place. Again there were problems with umpires not turning up for their allocation. BWHA has a fine and suspension system in place to deal with these occasions. No excuse is acceptable.

TURF UMPIRES’ STEWARD’S REPORT Each year I hope that someone will step up to take on this position, while on its own it is not difficult, but when coupled with a multitude of other tasks, it does not always gain the attention it needs.

Some clubs also do a great job and ensure they have enough options for each division they play in and their umpires are ready and willing to do their bit. Other clubs do not see the big picture “no umpires, no games” and rely on other clubs doing the hard work to cover for them, and it makes allocations much more difficult. I would like to thank those clubs who do the right thing and provide quality umpires and support them at every opportunity.

We are very lucky to have the services of the best umpire coaches in Australia with Jan Hadfield and Lyn Hill always available for assistance and guidance, my sincere thanks to both of them. We also have some of the very best umpires in the world officiating on BWHA games, and I thank each and every one for their assistance and support in filling allocations, especially at short notice when others are ill or injured.

I have worked with Amy Ryan (RDO) to allocate umpires to games to either be tested, mentored or gain experience with a higher level co-umpire, I hope more of this can happen in future years.

During planning we will be looking at the paying of umpires, rate, level and accreditation, which may have some impact on this area in 2016.

GRASS UMPIRES’ STEWARD’S REPORT

2015 was my fourth year as the grass umpire steward. The role is certainly made easier through familiarity with the people involved and with association and club processes. I am becoming more familiar with many of the regular grass umpires and with most of the club grass umpire co-ordinators. I believe that clubs are becoming more familiar with me as the role holder making communication about umpire availability and preferences easier.

Umpire allocations

This year many of the club umpire registers included more detail about umpire availability and experience which assisted my allocation decisions. Most registers this year included names of umpires rather than players. This is by far my preference. Management of expectations about who should umpire and who should pay are club duties and should not be expected to be managed by the umpire steward.

Downey Park fixtures required the allocation of 42 umpires each week. Approximately half of these allocations were covered by regular grass umpires who would umpire each week or every second week. Knowing who these umpires were and their preferences made allocations easy to manage. This provides a sense of stability and reassurance that clubs have umpires for most of their allocations each week while providing implications for umpire development. When the regulars are not available, either occasionally during the season or at all in the future, clubs without a back-up plan or umpire development program could be stuck providing their required quota of umpires.

Umpire development

All clubs have regular umpires who covered the majority of their allocations this year. Reliance on the same people can lead to shortages of umpires should the regulars become unavailable. Umpire development and mentoring is a role that only some clubs seem to have an organised plan to address. One club uses cake stall/raffle day profit to fund a paid mentoring system. This is to be commended. Use of inexperienced umpires without support is not a suitable way to cover umpire allocations. It is likely to lead to a poor experience for the umpire and for the players. With support, the senior grass competition can be a suitable

Page 14: THE EIGHTY FIRST ANNUAL REPORT OF BRISBANE … · BRISBANE WOMEN’S HOCKEY ASSOCIATION I. NC. OFFICE BEARERS ... 2012 Robyn Andersen (15) - 2011 Val Bartlett (10) - 2003 Wendy Stephens

14 2015 BWHA Annual Report

environment for the development of new umpires including juniors. This year mentoring was possible on more games yet there was not a huge increase in umpires being mentored. I encourage clubs to consider expanding their mentoring and umpire development plans for 2016 and beyond.

The allocation of umpires to the grass finals is done by members of the umpiring and technical committee as a way of recognising the abilities of DP umpires during the year. Some umpires approached this year were quite pleased to be recognised in this way.

Recommendations:

• That clubs continue to provide information about umpires through the umpire register and to me in person at the games or by email to assist me to allocate suitable umpires to suitable games each week.

• That clubs consider expanding their umpire mentoring plans to get more umpires competent to officiate on grass games and other competitions.

• For other sections of the association e.g. juniors, to use the allocation of umpires to finals as recognition of competent umpiring skills.

COMPETITIONS: RECORDING & REPORTING (MATCH SECRETARY REPORT)

TURF & GRASS I've been doing the grass match secretary for a few years now and took on the turf match secretary role this year as well. I'm pleased to say that generally clubs and teams get the registration of player’s right and the match sheets are mostly filled out correctly. Never under estimate how easy having the names on match sheets in alphabetical order makes my job! A few seconds at your end saves hours at my end (and for those entering into the database too).

Thanks to the office staff who send the sheets and then the emails to clubs each week. A little bit of work from a lot of people makes life much easier.

DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT

MEMBER DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (MDM) The 2015 season has brought many successes, varied development opportunities, and fun experiences to many of our members.

I am proud to reveal that approx 1400 participants actively participated in some form of development program or event this year. In addition to the development programs conducted, there were partner programs such as the JTAS competition that BWHA hosts at Rasey Park, many school development programs, sporting schools sessions and general community come and try events. In their own right they are very exciting platforms where BWHA can actively market hockey within our communities and clubs, with the aim being to support club growth or raise the skill and knowledge of their athletes and club officials.

BWHA continues to rely on the support and hard work of some very positive, knowledgeable and committed people who fill the roles of coaches, umpires, selectors, managers and officials. I would like to thank all of the people who have been a part of the development team in 2015 and have shared in the success of our programs and events. I am sure all who participated this season would agree these roles are very rewarding, and I encourage anyone interested in being involved in 2016 to contact me to discuss potential roles or

development pathways. Once again BWHA performed very highly at all junior tournaments, from U11’s, U13’s, and U15’s through to U18’s. BWHA secured places in grand finals at all of those tournaments, with U11’s winning gold, U13’s silver, U15’s silver and U18’s gold. All who participated are to be credited for representing Brisbane with pride, skill and determination. Those who were unsuccessful in selection I urge you to continue to gain development experience and attend as many clinics, training sessions and development programs as possible; never give up on your dream, stay positive and enjoy doing what you do best - I hope to see you all again in 2016.

BWHA were again crowned the Super League Champions of 2015, adding to the winning history of 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal since the tournaments conception 4 years ago. Congratulations to all who participated in this elite tournament. I am very proud to announce that those players selected in the QLD Scorchers went on to be crowned AHL Champions. We are very proud to have you as our role models in the sport.

BWHA hopes to redevelop the prestige of attending the Opens State Championships in 2016. I urge all who have goals to one day play Super League to nominate for this team, in order to raise the standard of competition of Opens and fill the gap between the U18’s and Super League tournaments.

I would like to congratulate all the players, coaches, managers, umpires and officials who were selected to represent QLD and Australia this year - it is very exciting to have more people sharing this experience. In 2016, Hockey QLD will be sending two teams to all 3 Junior National tournaments (U13’s, U15’s & U18’s).

The BWHA development team continue to explore avenues to improve the delivery of our programs, the variety of programs, delivery of accreditation courses, development experiences and the marketing and promotion of our programs. This year we hope that members have noticed an increase in the use of Facebook and our website to promote our fixtures, events and programs. In 2016, the BWHA website (www.bwha.com.au) will continue to be a one-stop information portal where members can access all nominations and registrations players, coaches, managers, umpires and selectors. Please continue to encourage your new and returning club members in 2016 to navigate our BWHA website and social media portals.

Have you liked us on Facebook yet? Simply search Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association. Do you follow us on Instagram? You can follow the joint BHA/BWHA @Brisbane_hockey page. For those clubs that have Instagram, I’m sure they would agree it is a great way to receive information and share what is happening such as results, photos and events in our local competitions. I would encourage more clubs to develop Facebook and Instagram accounts and get on board the social media movement.

Thank you to those who have supported the development of our members this year. Thanks to those members who have participated in a program this year and to the BWHA management, Junior Committee and staff for their continued support and dedication to our sport. I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, a relaxing and restful holiday and I look forward to seeing you at a hockey pitch in 2016.

REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (RDO) 2015 was yet another exciting year for the Development Department at Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association, with many development programs being continued from previous seasons, and new programs being delivered to our members for the first time.

The U7 & U9 Rookey Competition saw a few exciting changes to their calendar. Rasey Park was host to a “Come and Try” pre-season carnival. Clubs were invited to nominate a team for the Sunday, with the ability to welcome potential new recruits to their teams. The day was open to any interested parties, and participants were linked with clubs local to their area. Many clubs were successful in

signing up new players to bolster their teams. BWHA is very appreciative of the Junior Committee for giving their time during the carnival to assist, and club volunteers for being contacts on the day. This season we also trialled a new way to deliver skill development to our youngest members, by introducing “QAS Skills Sessions” each Saturday morning (replacing the previous “Skills Day”). Teams were booked into one session with a QAS representative player, where they were taught a variety of essential skills. A sincere thank you to Britt Wilkinson, Georgia Hillas and Jamie Stone for coaching our Rookies. The competition also welcomed Melanie Blanchard to the Co-ordinators role, Courtney Kerr (First Aid) and welcomed back Grahame AKA “Mr Doppio” (Doppios Coffee). It is always a pleasure (and a relief) to have their commitment to the competition. The competition itself was a success, with a massive (21) U7 teams and (30) U9 teams. The U11’s were exposed to yet another U11 Development Clinic which spanned over 2 Weeks in May. Thank you to all coaches who assisted during those Sunday afternoons. We received positive feedback to the new format in which we delivered the program, which will help us to improve development opportunities in the future. The Development Clinic gave a number of these U11’s new skills and concepts which they enthusiastically brought into their representative trials. We had a healthy pool of talent throughout the trials, and we’d again like to congratulate all whom were selected in teams that competed at the U11 Southern Cross. As always, we appreciate the assistance from our volunteers and selectors, without their efforts we wouldn’t be able to give these players the opportunity to represent the Association. The U11 Southern Cross once again saw 4 Brisbane teams compete across 3 divisions. Brisbane 1 finished 1st in Division 1, Brisbane 2 finished 2nd in Division 2, Brisbane 3 finished 3rd in Division 2 and Brisbane 4 finished 2nd in Division 3. The successful day would not have been possible without the extraordinary efforts from the Junior Committee, BWHA Staff, team coaches, team managers and volunteers.

I’m thankful to have been a part of most representative age groups this season in a number of ways – selecting, coaching, strength and conditioning or delivering development programs. A personal highlight was being on the QLD U13 selection panel, working with the Brisbane players in those teams by preparing them for nationals and finally coaching at the U13 National Championships in Sydney. I look forward to seeing our associations talent develop further and anticipate many more triumphs in the future.

Amy Ryan TOURS, UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT REPORT Tours – another good year with Southern Cross & Championships wins. We took out the following Championships: Super League, U18 Div 1 and Masters Div 1. With Southern Cross – we won U18 Div 1 & 2, U15 Div 1 & 2, U13 Div 1 & 2 and U11 Div 1. Congratulations to all Coaches, Managers & Players.

Thank you to all Selectors who volunteered this year – it is a very time consuming job and often thankless but all players have equal opportunity to be seen. All Brisbane teams represented us well to the best of their abilities and this experience will only assist them in the future. Thank you to all Coaches, Managers and Umpires for your time you put into each team and in achieving the best possible results. Congratulations to all players who made Qld teams, who made Shadows and who were TI’d.

Next year’s Championships are in: U13 Hervey Bay (4 teams) U15 Gympie (4 teams) U18 Townsville (3 teams) Masters Bundaberg (6 teams) Super League Brisbane (1 team) Opens Brisbane (1 team)

17 2015 BWHA Annual Report

Apparel sales were strong with all age groups buying a variety of apparel. Unfortunately it was not a cold winter so we have a large amount of hoodies and track pants on hand still. However this will be sold next year and only small apparel orders will be required early at the start of next year.

Uniform & Equipment– we are in the process of replacing our old playing uniforms – 30 sets were replaced this year and another 15 will be replaced next year. BWHA will be purchasing additional smaller sized skirts to outfit our U11 teams in the future.

Thank you to Maria Mijts, Pam Nicol and all the team managers who assisted with the uniform allocations and “safe” return during this year.

Sue Barsby FACILITY AND DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT The hockey fields at Downey and Rasey parks are improving from the point of view of the playing surface as there is a greater coverage of grass and the weeds are slowly being beaten. It is a long slow job. Field 13 (Granville St) has been filled, levelled and irrigation has been installed. This field will be available for use in 2016. Also the irrigation has been installed at Rasey Park. This gives BWHA seven fields irrigated. To assist with the cost of water the BCC has initiated a water harvesting scheme. The weir is beside Finsbury Park and the water will be reticulated to various holding tanks for different sporting associations. BWHA has a tank at Rasey which is also connected to the building roof. The tanks for the hockey/softball fields at Downey Park will be located behind the buildings at the end of field 10. BWHA will have to bear the cost of pumps and other associated equipment associated with our use of the water. With more irrigation BWHA will have increased costs for water, this project will reduce the cost of water on the condition that it rains, as the weir collects rain water run-off.

Two interesting events occurred. Field 9 was used as a helicopter pad for a young lad to go the rugby practice at Ballymore and during the G20 conference a RAAF Black Hawke helicopter landed on field 1 to pick up an injured soldier and to refuel. In both cases there was damage to the fields which has been paid for. I might add that Kath Proctor did a bit of urging in the right areas. Thanks Kath.

We had one storm that caused flooding but we are gradually protecting ourselves from flood damage. After each flood we have improved our protection to the extent that in the last flood the damage as about $5000 while back in 2008 it was $100,000. My thanks to the stalwart members who turned out to clean the buildings after the flood. Although we have less damage there is always a need for cleaning.

Christine Blanchard is continuing to fight for the right to build an artificial surface at Downey Park. We still live in hope. The remediation should occur once this is finalised. At the end of last season we handed field 4 to softball for their exclusive use and they in turn have given us field 9.

Thank you to Noala Gordon who runs the grounds department on a professional basis and to John Robinson who knows the way to fix anything and everything mechanical. They both work to improve the fields creating a better playing experience for our members. I would also like to thank Andrew Brodie who mows field 1 almost every week of the year. Additionally, my thanks to the members who dutifully complete their ‘working bee tasks’ and to those who help at various times.

ARCHIVES REPORT

Elma, Shirley & Joyce meet throughout the year to work through cataloguing, filing, displaying and repairing our valuable memorabilia. We still receive donations from the public and general hockey community and appreciate having the items sent to us, rather than being thrown away. We also had an old film converted to DVD which was played at the past members afternoon tea and this group worked to put more names to the multitude of photographs we have. Anyone interested in saving our precious memorability is encouraged to contact Elma through the BWHA Office, many hands do make light work.

CANTEEN SUPERVISOR REPORT As I was new to the canteen this year, I think we had a very good season. The junior team I had were easy to work with and 99% of the time carried out their work well. I have to thank them for taking care of the canteen when I was unable to be there. Special thanks goes to my “senior” assistants who guided me throughout the year – Abby Nicholls, Olivia Barsby and Sarah Dean. There was always great demand for the food we sold and nearly always sold out. This is mainly due to the wide, healthy variety of food we now sell in the Canteen. Many thanks for the opportunity to work for your organisation. Robyn Simkin

CHAIRPERSONS REPORT

2015 has been a very successful year for Junior Girls hockey in Brisbane. BWHA continues to provide a competition structure of the highest quality and the development opportunities for the players within BWHA is second to none. The 2015 Junior Committee of BWHA has been a cohesive and productive working group, looking to ensure the best that can be provided for Junior Girls hockey players within BWHA competitions.

Junior Committee Representatives 2015 Lisa Donaldson (Commercial) Judy Hartnett (Valley) Natasha Gaddes (KW) Jo Galvin (KW) Leisa Campbell (Easts)

Competition Structure BWHA offers hockey to young girls from 4yrs of age, until they finish school and move onto senior ranks permanently. 2015 saw ever increasing numbers of teams competing each Friday and Saturday, from U7 Rookey to Junior Turf 1. The demand on access to fields means that many competitions, both on turf and grass, have an odd number of teams, with byes as a part of the draw. This allows for increased numbers of teams to be accommodated.

Junior Turf: BWHA continues our 3 JT and 1 13T competitions, with grading looking to optimise the competition equality and development opportunities for players. 2015 saw strong competitions across the turf divisions, and while variances were noted, these will be used for planning into the future. There will always be teams that are stronger, and teams and clubs that are developing their players and programs, and BWHA is looking to ensure that all players are given every chance to grow their hockey in a supportive and positive environment. Junior Grass: 2015 saw record numbers of teams competing each Saturday morning at Rasey and Downey Parks. Grass hockey is a hugely successful component of hockey for girls and women in Brisbane. Grass hockey allows players to establish confidence, basic skills, team spirit and a love of the game, that they can then take to whatever level they aspire. ALL hockey players, even our Hockeyroos, started their hockey on grass. Development of grass players must not be underestimated for its value, for the good of our game and the future of our competitions. 2015 gave us a strong grass season, with only 1 competition day lost to rain, very early on. The fields were maintained to a very high standard and supported great hockey for juniors all season long. The finals series was a great spectacle of hockey and colour, with many teams represented. Grand Final day was a day of Joint Premierships, with a record number, again showing the depth and consistency of the standard of hockey played.

Junior Umpiring One of the most important ways to support the future of our game is to provide a strong and supportive system of Junior Umpire development. RDO Amy Ryan drives BWHA’s commitment to creating the opportunities for young umpires to learn the skills and develop the confidence, to make umpiring another facet of their hockey.

Without umpires, we do not have hockey games and the 2015 Junior Committee has worked to provide an environment of safety and positivity, through supervision of fields during games, and immediate and strong attention to any situation, that reflects negatively onto any umpire. This is not always easy, as sadly umpires are exposed to sidelines that forget the importance of umpires to our sport, and also our codes of conduct. 2015 did see some intervention needed to protect and support umpires, but thankfully, these situations are

Page 40: THE EIGHTY FIRST ANNUAL REPORT OF BRISBANE … · BRISBANE WOMEN’S HOCKEY ASSOCIATION I. NC. OFFICE BEARERS ... 2012 Robyn Andersen (15) - 2011 Val Bartlett (10) - 2003 Wendy Stephens

very much a minority. BWHA and the Junior Committee will continue in our commitment to the development of young umpires, into 2016 and beyond. Development of Players BWHA, under Regie Fisher’s guidance, has seen a pleasing increase in the number of Brisbane Juniors receiving higher representative honours each year. The BWHA Junior Committee works to support all opportunities that may be given to players to develop their skills. 2015 saw the inclusion of a 10 team structure within the 13T division, from 7 teams the year before. The grading of a 10 team competition, exposed more girls to turf hockey, but also offered the retention of time on grass, for all 13T players. It is widely accepted, that the basic skills of grass hockey, are needed to support full skill development on turf. Whilst there were variances in scores of some 13T games, all players will have finished the season, as more rounded and confident players.

U11 Southern Cross Tournament The U11 Southern Cross Tournament held at Downey Park in 2015, is a wonderful spectacle of hockey for the Southern Associations youngest representatives. The value of U11 representative opportunities is to give the girls a chance to play in an environment of high level competition and to develop the Pride in representing your Association. The BWHA Junior Committee hosted the 2015 competition and it was a wonderful day. To watch the colours of the march past, the skill of developing young players on the field and the pride of young girls giving their all, is what our game is about. These girls all aspire to play for their country, and the U11 Representative season, is the first step in this journey. Thank you to the many helpers who supported the Junior Committee in delivering a hugely successful day of hockey for the U11 girls of SEQ. Junior Committee As a group of 5 volunteers, we met when able, before BWHA Council meetings. General day to day business, was managed very successfully, through email and phone communication. Each Saturday morning on a rotational basis, Junior and Management Committee, provided a presence at Downey Park, to ensure the environment of positivity, for players, umpires and supporters alike, to enjoy watching Junior Sport. The second year of Club Roster duty continues to be a successful way of managing the large grass competition that happens each Saturday. The clubs have an understanding of what it takes to run our Associations competition and they each give of their volunteers, to share the load. The introduction of the system has been very successful and in general, clubs are taking their responsibility very seriously. Thank you to the Junior Clubs of BWHA for their part this year. The Junior Committee representatives shared a common goal of commitment to the continued growth of Junior Girls Hockey in Brisbane. In consultation with BWHA Management Committee, the Junior Committee endeavoured to provide quick, positive and appropriate decisions or guidance, to offer all players, teams and clubs, the best outcomes to concerns or requests. Our Goal for the season was to promote the best opportunities and environment that we could, for Junior Girls hockey to be played within the BWHA competitions. On reflection, the BWHA Junior Committee has delivered on this goal and we commit to continue to work with BWHA Management, to see this maintained into the future.

Thank you to the BWHA Management Committee for the opportunity to work as a Junior Committee group, to focus on Junior Girls Hockey. Thank you to the strong women who have represented BWHA on the 2015 Junior Committee. We strove to do our best, and I believe confidently that we have given this. It has been an absolute honour to have worked with you, for the good of Junior Girls Hockey within BWHA. Leisa Campbell
