My Dear Parishioners:

In this Sunday’s Gospel reading from Luke, our Lord is asked to settle a dispute between two brothers who are fighting over an inheritance. Our Lord answers with a warning that if they devote their lives to wealth they will lose their salvation. Our Lord said to focus instead on building treasure in Heaven and to become rich in what matters to God.

In my years as a priest, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen this exact scenario happen between siblings. I’ve watched in horror as brothers and sisters fight over the money that their parent has left behind. Sometimes the fight ends with complete separation for years.

I ask you, have you let earthly goods come between you and a family member or friend? Is there someone you are not on “speaking terms” with? Is it because of money, possessions, or earthly honor? Listen to our Lord’s words and consider how you might be able to move the situation into a more lifegiving outcome for both of you.

MASS INTENTIONS THIS WEEK

Quote of the Week “My God I honor and Him alone I serve.”

Saint Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr Feast Day (August 10)

Saint Lawrence lived a deeply, holy life. He was a very humble, Roman deacon who understood his true vocation of ministering to the poor and the less fortunate. Because of his love for neighbor, he suffered martyrdom by being burned alive on a griddle.

(c. 225-August 10, 258)
