Most of the artefacts are from the collection of Sir Henry Wellcome, however we also have objects on loan from other places such as the British Museum, Aberystwyth University,
and Woking College.

Free Public Activities
Play the ancient board game Senet, handle real ancient Egyptian artefacts and learn to write your
name in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.
Try your hand at mummification as you practice on our ’dummy-mummy’, or have a go at our colouring
activities, themed trails and audio guides. You can even dress up and try on ancient Egyptian style clothing, so remember to bring your camera!

Activity pack includes worksheets on topics including writing Hieroglyphs, mummification, animals and the
gods of ancient Egypt.
The House of Life tells the story of
everyday life in ancient Egypt displaying
artefacts that were used on a daily basis including household furniture, children's toys, jewellery and
clothing.
The House of Death explores the ancient Egyptian attitude to
death and religion, with exhibitions that include
mummified animals, magical
amulets, death masks and even the
book of the dead.

Wednesday 21st Dylan Thomas & Ancient Egypt Dulcie Engel Independent Researcher
Dylan Thomas grew up in a period of great fascination with all things ancient Egyptian following the discovery of Tutankhamun’s Tomb in 1922. Egyptian symbolism crops up throughout his early short stories, and plays a crucial role in such poems as ‘My world is pyramid’, ‘Should lanterns shine’ and ‘Altarwise by owl-light’.
In this talk, Egypt Centre volunteer Dr Dulcie Engel discusses the significance of Ancient Egypt to Swansea’s most famous son.

Wednesday 19th Not Just an Aftermath Dr Manuela Lehmann The British Museum, Project Curator
Tell el-Dab'a is a settlement that is well known for its Second Intermediate Period and New Kingdom houses, temples and palaces. Less well known is that this site was settled extensively in the Late and Ptolemaic Periods as well. Changes in the traditional Egyptian architecture evolve into a quite different settlement layout.
New research is giving insights into a typical Egyptian settlement in the time after the New Kingdom in the Delta.

From the wondrous Phoenix to flying snakes, the ancient Egyptians believed in some very curious creatures. Discover the importance of animals in daily life and how they were connected with the ancient Egyptian gods. Explore the afterlife and the monsters that guard the way, and have a go at making your very own Egyptian winged serpent to take home with you. Suitable for ages 6-10

Votive animal mummies were produced in their millions by the ancient Egyptians as a means of communication between man on earth and the divine. At the University of Manchester, cutting edge non-destructive scientific analysis is being used to help unravel the secrets of these ancient animal mummies. X-rays and CT scans help to tell us about the contents of the bundles, as well shedding light on how the mummies were manufactured.

Friday 18th Photographing Antiquity II Photography event
After the success of last year’s event, the Egypt centre will once again be giving you the opportunity to photograph real ancient Egyptian artefacts outside of their cases!
Take on the challenge of our gallery lighting conditions and use your skills to take the best photos of our collection as well as some dramatic gallery shots.
A selection of the best photographs taken will then became part of our new touring exhibition, being displayed in the Taliesin Arts Centre, then the Grand Theatre Swansea and Carmarthen County Museum!

Some years ago Nicholas Reeves published a book entitled ‘Akhenaten: Egypt’s False Prophet’. Other writers have treated Akhenaten more positively as a cross between Socrates and Jesus Christ. In this lecture I want to analyse the written and archaeological evidence to determine the origins of his religious agenda and its precise nature.

As a volunteer you can meet
new friends, learn new skills, get on a career path, and have the
satisfaction of helping run Wales' only museum of ancient Egypt!
The adult volunteer programme runs Tuesday - Saturday, 10am - 4pm and is open to anyone over the age of 18!
We also offer Free Egyptology classes for our volunteers and give them the opportunity to handle artefacts usually on display within the museum or in storage.

We rely on volunteers to maintain our galleries, welcome our visitors, answer enquiries and give guided tours.
You can also volunteer as an educational leader for visiting school groups, become an admin assistant or even a documentation assistant working with the collection!
As a young volunteer you will become a Gallery Assistant.
This means you will be looking after the galleries,
talking with visitors and demonstrating our hands-on
activities such as mummification.
No other museum
in the UK is run by young
people so
completely!
The young volunteer programme runs
10.am—4.pm every Saturday,
and during school holidays. Morning, afternoon and full day shifts available.
Any child aged 10-18 can become
a young volunteer.
You don’t need to know anything about ancient Egypt or museums,
but you do need an interest
in history, heritage
and working with
lots of different people!

The Egypt Centre is situated on Swansea University
Singleton Campus, and is part of the Taliesin building
(Number 32 / 32.1 on map).
Arriving by bus
Please see the First Cymru website for full details.
Bus numbers 2A, 3A, 4 and 82A depart from the Quadrant Bus Station for the University’s
Singleton Park Campus and return at regular intervals.
Parking The University must advise that only disabled visitors are able to park on Campus itself. Pay & Display. All other vehicles park in Swansea’s Recreation Ground Car Park (approximately 500m walk away), or at the Pub on the Pond. Pay & Display.
