the efficiency of cold forming
TRANSCRIPT
What is Cold Forming?
*It is the process of forging metals at near room temperatures
*Metal is formed at high speed and pressure into tool steel or carbide dies
*This process increases the metal’s hardness, yield strength, and tensile strength
Material UsageBenefits
*Cold Forming production speeds are 500-600, compared to 1-2 parts per minute in screw machining.
*It results in low material loss of 0-3%, which is much less than 70% or more material lost in the machining, grinding, or
chipping processes.
*Due to its efficiency, cold forming results in viable cost effective and high quality parts
*Cold Forming is often the best alternative for metals that are more difficult to work with (i.e. nickel, gold, pure copper,
titanium, palladium)
*The increased metal strength can improve toughness and fatigue performance
Can You See the Difference?
*Other processes leave scraps which are usually discarded or recycled
*Note the absence of scraps in the cold forming process
What is Micro-manufacturing?*Micro-manufacturing is an innovative metal forming
technology
*It produces parts with little to no scrap and produces them up to 100 times faster than traditional processes i.e. screw
machining
*It is applicable to a variety of materials which include: stainless steel, precious metals,
nickel alloys, low-expansion alloys, or anycopper alloy
Its Impact on Industry*in 2012, manufacturers accounted for $1.87 trillion of the economy
*Micro-manufacturing has improved industries such as: medical devices, aerospace, automotive, and energy exploration and
development
*It has contributed safer, more efficient automobiles
*It has produced medical equipment including: as dental implants, endoscopic devices, drug delivery, interventional therapies and
implantable devices.
*It has produced energy efficient technologies such as solar panels, complex navigation systems for airplanes and space shuttles.
