THE EFFICACY OF GOD’S WORD (15th SOTY A). The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double edged

sword, it penetrates even to the dividing soul and spirit, joints and

marrow,

it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Heb.4:12). It sanctify

morals, enlighten the ignorant, corrects our defects, transforms our

inmost being, nourishes our souls, inspires our thoughts to be godly

and gives encouragement to those who are on the verge of giving up

hope. It consoles the afflicted, heals the broken hearted, comforts the

bereaved and the sorrowful. God’s word guides our steps along the

path of life eternal. It bestows upon us the sanctifying power of God’s

grace to accomplish His kind purposes on our pilgrim journey to

heaven.

R1. Isaiah 55:10-11, the prophet Isaiah captures the efficacious power

of God’s word which He pours forth like rain through the mouth of

His prophets and ministers: it will not return to me void but

accomplish the purpose for which it was sent, that is, to effectively

deliver Israel His chosen people from Babylonian captivity and restore

them to their home land. Many people then as it is in our days, did not

believe in this promise until it came to pass. Several years ago the

British Weekly published this provocative letter: Dear Sir,

it seems ministers think their sermons are very important and spend a

great deal of time preparing them. I have being attending church quite

regularly for thirty years and l have probably heard three thousand of

them. To my consternation, l discovered that l could not remember a

single sermon, l wonder if a minister’s time might be more profitably

spent on some thing else? For weeks a storm of editorial responses

ensued, which finally ended with this letter: Dear Sir,

l have been married thirty years, during that time l have eaten 32,850

meals-mostly my wife’s cooking. I cannot remember the menu of a

single meal. And yet, l have the distinct impression that without them,

l would have starved to death long ago. John Schletewits.

In the Gospel reading, Mt. 13: 1-9, Jesus indicated that the fulfillment

of God’s word in the life of each person depends to a large extent on

the inner disposition, state of mind and the mindset of the listeners.

The seed that falls by the wayside refers to ill disposed hearers such as

the man who wrote the provocative letter. This nominal Christian

regarded the well prepared homilies of ministers to be a waste of their

precious time. According to him, the homily is just a meaningless

routine and formalism. Hence, he has already closed his heart and

mind, tune off his spiritual batteries against paying attention to God’s

voice.

Such people might have known public sinners whose lives has being

transformed by the Gospel into saints but do not place a high premium

on God’s word. They fail to allow it penetrate their hardened hearts

and closed minds. They often attend church worship, belong to pious

societies and organizations, carry out devotional prayers, do works of

charity and the corporal works of mercy and receive the sacraments

without opening their hearts to let the word of God change or

transform them.

They often hear the voice of God speaking to them during mass but

prejudice and intellectual pride hinder them from truly listening

attentively to understand what the minister has to say. They take his

message literary for granted as mere philosophical and theological

Jargon. They wished the liturgy of the word were soon over, so that

after mass, they could go home and spend the rest of

the Sunday partying, playing, hanging out with friends, watching

sports and playing games. They careless about the rich spiritual

benefits that come from listening to and praying the scriptures

meditatively as God’s word. God’s word will only thrive in a person

whose heart is open, soft and convinced to do nothing less than

God’s will by keeping His commandments and obeying His word as

Christ told us to.

We must love God’s word and love those who proclaim before we will

allow it to sink into our hearts and accomplish the purpose of God in

our life.

The seed that falls on the rocky ground pertains to those who are quick

to listen to God’s word with enthusiasm, they make a fast decision to

repent but the enthusiasm soon die a natural death because they lack

personal inner convictions. They also lack the necessary spiritual

discipline of prayer, personal mortification, sacrificial spirit, and the

ability to endure, stand firm and overcome adverse circumstances,

trials and persecution,

mockery and abuse from former worldly minded friends. As such the

change lasts only for a little while and their enthusiasm vanishes

sooner or later. We are obliged to accept with faith and conviction the

challenges paused by the cross as the only source of our salvation.

The seed among thorns refers to the hearer with many interests like the

deceit of wealth, cares and worries of life, over attachment to a

comfortable living and self indulgence. It makes one either tired or too

busy to pray, go to church for confession, attend mass, to meditate on

God’s word, visit a sick person and to make a phone call. We have to

fixe our priorities right as St. Augustine said; love God and do what

you want. God comes first before any other thing that we do in life.

Therefore, we must set aside quality time to be alone with Him in

prayer before going out to meet others or face our daily tasks and the

challenges that life presents to us with trust in God.

The seed on good and fertile soil stands for those with a good heart, an

open mind that is receptive, attentive and meditative on God’s

word which lights the dark corners of sins, convinces us of guilt and

inspires us to conversion and helps us to begin a new life. Each one

combines the different kinds of soil within us. Some times we are like

the seeds on the path, rocky ground, and thorny soil. However, the

word of God is able to transform our bad hearts into good. Our hearts

are transformed when we hear the voice of God and take it to heart.

The unction of the Holy spirit inspires the message to touch and

change the evil thoughts in our hearts from sinful or worldly

inclinations to; whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,

whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, anything

excellent or praiseworthy ( Phil. 4:8). Any one who prays and

practices virtue will climb the spiritual ladder to the peak of

saintliness. Some will achieve 30% virtue, others 60%, some 80%

only a few can attain excellence in virtue to a hundred fold degree.

Sr. Mary Catherine Jacobs has a new home. It is at Immaculate Heart Hermitage in the Diocese of Rapid City (South Dakota). She will reside there as a hermit. Originally from Ralph, she entered religious life at the age 18 at the Carmel of Mary Monastery at Wahpeton ND. It was a cloistered contemplative order with devotion to imitating the Blessed Mother. The monastery in ND was founded in 1954, the Marian year. It was about 30 years when she began to know the eremitical calling (to become a hermit) around 1986 . When Vatican II talked about going back to your roots, that was the point in her life where she felt very strongly that she was being called back to live in the origin of the order. In reading the Holy Father’s encyclical on “Rich in Mercy”, St. John Paul II speaks of conversion to the father as an experience of knowing the trinity dwells in every soul. Here is when Sr. Mary Catherine felt called to a life of prayer, where “you can reach into everybody’s heart by prayer.” Sr. Mary Catherine first explored the hermetic life in New Jersey. She also lived in communities in Texas and a new community starting in Brazil. Sr. Mary Catherine said “My hermitage is not a place where I get away, it’s where I meet the whole world in prayer and in Christ, because Christ prays for everyone. It’s almost like an infinite vocation-not limited to time or space, no one is excluded.” Sr. Mary Catherine took her temporal eremitic vows on June 29, 2017, at Our Lady of the Black Hills, Piedmont, South Dakota. This is where she attends daily Mass and at St. Martin Monastery. Prayer request requests can be sent to her at [email protected]. The diocesan policy requires hermits residing in the Diocese of Rapid City to be self-supporting. Sr. Mary Catherine partially supports herself by painting and selling icons, and painting artwork for Christmas and Easter cards, bookmarks, and holy cards. If you would like to view her artwork for sale, go to Land of Carmel Art Inspirations at carmelartinspirations.com. She also sews Mass linens for the Carmelites in Wahpeton. Sr. Mary Catherine has established the Immaculate Heart Hermitage as a non-profit organization in the state of South Dakota with a board of trustees so the she can receive donations to help support herself and her ministry.

Our Lady of Guadalupe History Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church displays a special role

in the history of Solomon. The church still reflects the archi-

tecture of its time being built in 1891 on the site of the previous

church destroyed by fire. Throughout the years, numerous ma-

jor improvements and additions have been made, through the

hard work of parishioners and members of other churches who

have donated their time and efforts, the church complex now

includes a rectory (not at present) and office, small museum,

gift shop and large annex which houses a kitchen and dividable

classrooms. Outside amenities include a large concrete patio

with central fountain and a nearby barbecue.

In the church proper, of special interest are the beautiful stained

glass windows, acquired the the generosity of various families

of the church; dedicated to OLG , August 14, 1988. The win-

dows were designed and made, at the Holy Ghost Monastery in

Georgia. In addition to the six main windows, other smaller

windows are located in a balcony area; each reflects a special

part of Biblical history. Outside, at the rear of the church is a

special shrine, built at the request of then resident priest Father

Warren, in honor of his mother, dedicated in 1982, honoring

the 450th anniversary of the appearance of Our Lady of Guada-

lupe. Also at the back of the church is a rock grotto with a

statue of the Blessed Mother and to the left a statue of St. Fran-

cis Assisi.
