CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background
English language have four skills, they are reading, writing, speaking, and
listening. Listening is one of the skills that are considered difficult but neglected,
when compared to other language skills such as reading, writing and speaking.
Listening is a listening activity where students are expected to understand the
meaning of an expression that is heard.
One of the things that can be done in listening skills is to listen to music from
JOOX application. I as a user, the use of the JOOX application is very effective in
listening skills, we can enjoy in listening. The advantage of the JOOX application
include that it does not require a lot of storage memory compared to offline media
players and only requires a small amount of data to access.
Sevik (2012), the most critical outcome of early language teaching is listening
capacity, and song are considered to be one of the best ways to practice and
strenghthen the listening abilities of young learners in particular. Rizal (2017)
Listening is to pay attention to somebody says to you so that you follow their
advice or believe them. So, listening is an active, purposeful process of making
sense of what we hear.
Several previous studies have been conducted. First, According to Anggraini

at all groups of both students and higher education.
After communicate with the teacher at the school, the problem is the ability or
skills of students who are lacking, there is no interest in learninglistening. To
overcome this, the study uses JOOX application in learning listening skills.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
A. LISTENING SKILL
1. Definition of Listening
Listening is one of the English skills. This skill is very important in the
development of language skills following some opinions of experts about
listening. First, according to Sevik (2012), the most critical outcome of early
language teaching is listening capacity, and song are considered to be one of the
best ways to practice and strenghthen the listening abilities of young learners in
particular. The second, according Dhamarullah (2015) listening skill are
competences to understand the meaning of the hearing. They identify units in
sound or speech when listening, and use their background knowledge to
understand what they hear. They listen to confirm their expectations and get
information, details or specific information.
From the definition above the researcher may conclude that listening is the act
of hearing something which is need more attention and concentration to know the
meaning what the speakers said. Nevertheless, they can encounter difficulties
telling their comprehension, both internal and external. To order to overcome
these challenges, they need to practilistening more often, get as much exposure as
possible, and become acquainted spoken English.
4
5
2. Staged Process of Listening
According to Nunan, (2011) listening is a six-staged process, consisting of
hearing, attention, understanding, remembering, evaluating and responding. These
stage occur in sequence and rapid succession.
The first one is hearing and has to do with response coused by sound waves
stimulating the sensory receptors of the ear; hearing is the perception of the sound,
not necessarily paying attention, you must hear to listen.
For this, we have attention. It refers to a variety that our brain focuses on. The
brain screens stimuli and permits only a select few to come into focus.
The third stage is understanding, which consist of analyzing the meaning of
what we have and understanding symbols we have seen and heard. We must
analyze the stimuli we have perceived.
The next step, remembering is a vital listening method as a result of it implies
that a personal, additionally to receiving and deciphering the massage, has
additionally superimposed it to the minds storage bank, which implies that the
data are remembered in our mind. However even as our attention is selective,
therefore too is our emory, whats remembered could also be quite totally different
from what was originally detected or seen.
In the penultimate stage, evaluating, the listener evaluates the message that
has been received. It is at this point when active listenersweigh evidence, sort fact
from opinion and determine the presence or absence of bias or prejudice in a
message.
6
Finally, responding, a stage during which, in keeping with the response, the
speaker checks if the message has been received properly. This stage needs that
the receiver complete the method through verbal or non verbal feedback.
3. Types of Listening
According to Ramadhika (2014), there are types of listening are :
a. Informative listening is the situation in which the primary concern of the
listener is to understand the message. Listeners are successful to the extent
that the meaning assigned to messages is as close as possible to that
intended by the sender.
b. Relationship listening is either intended to help the individual or to
improve the relationship between people.
c. Appreciative listening includes listening to music for pleasure, listening to
speakers because you like their style, your choice of theater, television,
radio, or film. It is the response of the listener, not the source of the
message, which determines appreciative listening. What makes one person
appreciative listening can provide something else for another.
d. Critical listening is the ability to listen objectively. Critical listening is a
topic that deserves more attention than we can afford.
e. Discriminative hearing is the ability to distinguish between different
sounds. It may be the most important type because the other four are basic.
By being sensitive to changes in the frequency, size, power, pitch, and
focus of the speaker, the insightful listener may discern even nuances of
difference in context.
7
Refers to Rost (2013) in his book defined is a part of communication process
which includes six types of listening practice, as follows:
a. Intensive listening is a type of listening that refers to listen to the text
closely, with intention in decoding the input for analysis purposes.
b. Selective listening is a type of listening that refers to listening for planning
some goals in mind, to gather specific information to do a task.
c. Interactive listening is a type of conversation interaction where the
listeners take a role to understand through giving feedback, asking some
questions, and supporting the speaker.
d. Extensive listening is a type of listening to that refers to listen in a few
minutes at a time, focusing on the target language, often with a long-term
purpose of appreciating and learning the context.
e. Responsive listening is a type of listening practice where the listeners’
responsiveness is very important and might be the purpose of the activity.
f. Autonomous listening is a type of listening that focuses on independent
listening without direct instruction from an instructor. Autonomous
listening involved all types of listening such as intensive, selective,
extensive, responsive listening.
4. The Listening Process
According to Batova (2013) listening process divided in two steps :
a. Bottom-up process decoding on the segmentation of the individual words
out of the speech stream will require bottom-up processing. It is hindsight
8
in it involves the recognition of word and the activation of lexical
information relevant to known words.
b. Top-down is broadly the opposite of bottom-up, stressing the use by the
listener of their current awareness of a subject and the related context in
creating assumption about the meaning of the speaker and changing them
to fit new incoming information as necessary.
5. Listening Activity
When teacher are teaching listening, it is very important to follow a
pattern, Bueno, Madrid and Mclaren (2011) establish the following pattern:
a. Pre-listening would be the primary stage, wherever the context is
established. The teacher creates motivation and students do some activities
to make ready them for what they're going to hear.
b. The following stage is listening, where learners do the mentioned task or
find an answer. There are two kinds of material and procedures. On the one
hand, intensive reading helps students to accumulate vocabulary and
synchronic linguistics and it always takes place outside the room. They do
it for pleasure so that, their knowledge of the language improves and it
makes the student better readers. On the other hand, intensive listening is
what students usually learn in the classroom, through audio CD and
activities such as answering a route on a map, making notes, etc.
c. Post-listening the part where students have the opportunity to check their
answer about they have been listening to, to give feedback, and consolidate
9
what they have learned. It is useful for teachers because it helps to analyze
particular difficulties the students could have with the listening activity.
6. The Purposes of Listening
According to Pratama (2018), he states that the purposes of listening are as
follows :
a. Specifically, to focus on messages communicated by others.
b. To achieve maximum accuracy, to disclose information to others.
c. To decide what other people are talking about.
d. To control nonverbal signals around verbal messages from other people.
e. To express desires, concerns, and interests.
f. To advertise full, open, and honest expressions.
g. To enhance the 'others-centered' approach during an interaction.
h. To achieve mutual acceptance and agree with others of these two priorities.
7. The Difficulties in Listening
According to Underwood (2012), there are seven problems in listening
skill that student may encounter:
a. The listener cannot control the speed of the person delivering message, and
they feel the message delivered is gone they can understand the contents of the
message. At the moment they can understand one message, at the some time a
message others are gone.
b. Listeners don’t have opportunity to ask the speaker to repeat or clarifying the
message delivered, for example when listening radio, watching tv, so that the
listener must be able to understand it as is.
10
c. Limited vocabulary that is owned by listener, makes the listener unable
understand the contents of the text he hears can even make them become bored
and frustared.
d. Listener failure to recognize and understand ‘signs’ sent by the speaker who
couse the listener to be wrong inside understand the contents of the message it
receives.
e. Error interpreting message received, so the contents of that message are the
delivered was received or interpreted differently by the listener.
f. No able to concentrate because of various things, for example unattractive
topics, fatigue physical, noisy environment and etc.
g. Concern about differences ways and materials taught by the teacher with
material that is heard through audio device or native speaker language English.

JOOX application has a complete music collection. however, there are some
songs like the latest songs that cannot be heard freely. Users are required to be
registered as VIP service users. To be registered as a VIP service user, there is
a weekly or monthly fee of between IDR 25,000-50,000.
e. Too many advertisements
JOOX application puts up advertisements on his application to benefit. Not
infrequently when listening to a song there are a few seconds the ad suddenly
appears and must be heard too.
5. How JOOX Application Applied
Here are some steps in applied JOOX application in learning, there are:
First, we have to register our account and sign in. After sign in, The teacher
gives questions in the form of fill in the blank containing the song that has been
previously chosen and several empty boxes must be completed by the students.
Students are asked to listen carefully to the song and fill in each empty box
18
according to the song being listened to. After students write down some of the
words that have beenobtained through listening to the song, the teacher shows the
correct words contained to the song then students are asked to match if they write
the wrong words. Then the teacher asks students to choose a difficult word or
unfamiliar word and write down the meaning of the word.
Those steps will apply after the teacher explain the topic of the day. After all,
students understand the topic, the teacher might be apply this media or the teacher
might start with JOOX application as a media to start the learning process in the
classroom. So it will stimulate the students to live in classroom activity.
C. ENGLISH SONG
1. Definition of song
According Robiatussholikah (2019) Song is a short musical work set up with an
equally essential poetic text for music and language. It can be written for one or
more voices and it is normally performed with accompaniment to the instrument.
It is generally easy to understand the language of the album. This provides
inspiration and makes the bond closer between the teacher and the students. The
partnership would make the students have the confidence to ask the teacher about
everything they learn.
While according to Ocak (2012) songs are Essential teaching instruments in
EFL teaching Since as (English Foreign Language) Most educators figure out that
students enjoy Listening to in-language songs The schoolroom. Students also
occupy strong positions. Perceptions of music and students who are Silence may
19
usually become very talkative. In explaining it. Therefore the students They
should be greatly inspired.
2. Kinds of song
According to adawiyah (2017) there are kinds of song :
a) ) For all songs. It is named so because this kind of song can be used for any
task.
b) A fast song or a slow one. This implies that the operation that is in line with
this is The behavior that does not involve a lot of energy, such as sleeping, is
a kind of music.
c) A song which tells tales. It's a song of stories in chronological order. It has a
beginning, a middle, and an ending.
d) A lengthy song. This kind of song is a song that is four minutes long or
longer, and it's usually hard to sing because it's 4 minutes long or longer.

research. And discussion would like to discuss about the description of the
findings research that have been analyzed.
A. FINDINGS
1. The effectiveness of JOOX application in teaching English
The description of the result of data analysis will be covered in findings of the
research. The description of the result of data analysis about student’s listening
skill through JOOX application which the data were collected from 26 students as
an experimental group by using fill in the blanks and question answer. The test
was given by the researcher in pre-test and post-test.
This research was conducted for four meeting which followed by 26 students.
The material of pre-test and post-test was listening song through JOOX
application which the title “I believe I can fly”. For the first, the researcher
explained to the students about the aim of the researcher. The researcher also
explained about JOOX application and the question of fill in the blanks and
question answer.
a. The effectiveness of students’ listening skill

2. The total scores of the students listening test by using SPSS
From the row score students listening on pre-test and post-test, it can be seen
that the learning outcomes in class XI Mipa 1 are seen from the total pre-test and
post-test scores. After that it was entered into the SPSS application. In this case, to
find out the results of students learning listening. Student learning outcomes can
be seen from the following table:

a. Test of normality
According to Payadnya (2018), The normality test has a function to be able to
find out whether the data is normally distributed or not by using SPSS as follows:
Tabel of 4.4
Test of normality
Kolmogorov-Smirnov Shapiro-Wilk
Statistic Df Sig. Statistic Df Sig.
Pre-test ,166 26 ,063 ,932 26 ,084
Post-test ,149 26 ,142 ,954 26 ,288
Lilliefors Significance Correction
Based on the table above, it can be seen the results of normality testing using
the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. If the significant value is greater than 0.05
(significant level), it means that the data comes from a normally distributed
population (Herlina, 2019).
Based on the table, the results of the pre-test normality test show that the
Kolmogorov-Smirnov value is significant at 0.063 and the Shapiro-Wilk value is
significant at 0.084 using a significant level of 0.05. The significant value obtained
is greater than α (0.063> 0.05). Then the results of the post-test normality test
showed that the Kolmogorov-Smirnov value was significant at 0.142 and Shapiro-
Wilk 0.288 using a significant level of 0.05. The significant value obtained is
greater than α (0.142> 0.05). So it can be concluded that all pre-test and post-test
scores of class XI Mipa 1 students are normally distributed.
31
b. Test of homogeneity
The second is the homogeneity of data variance. According to Herlina (2019),
If the significant value> 0.05 then the data is declared homogeneous and if the p-
value <0.05 then the data is declared not homogeneous. The homogeneity test of
data variance can be seen in the following table:
Table of 4.6
Test of Homogeneity of Variances
Lavene statistic df1 df2 Sig.
1,368 1 50 ,248
Analysis of data at SPSS using homogeneity calculations, obtained a p-value
= 0.248. Conditions that must be met as a condition so that the data comes from a
homogeneous population, namely p-value> α, α = 0.05. Because the p-value =
0.248> α = 0.05, based on the results of these calculations it can be concluded that
the population variance comes from the same population (homogeneous).
After conducting the prerequisite test, namely the normality test and the
homogeneity test, as a prerequisite test for conducting the hypothesis test, then the
hypothesis test will be carried out to test and answer the research hypothesis. The
hypothesis testing is as follows:
c. Test of hyphothesis
Hypothesis testing has a function to determine the provisional conjecture
formulated by the researcher. The following is the hypothesis that the researcher
previously set. Based on the homogeneity and normality test, the statistics applied
32
are parametic statistics with paired sample t-tests. The following is the hypothesis
that the authors set earlier:
1. Null hypothesis (H0) : accepted if English song by JOOX application is not
effective in teaching listening.
2. Alternative hypothesis (Ha) : accepted if English song by JOOX
application is effective in teaching listening.

After conducted paired sample test, there is way that can be done to test
the hypothesis in this paired sample t test. Namely by comparing the t test with t
table. The basic for making decision are if the t test >t table, then Ha is accepted
and if t test <t table, then H0 IS accepted.
33
Based on the table paired sample test above, t test is -54,780 negative
becouse the mean score of the pre test was low than the mean score of the post-
test. in this cases, the negative t test can be accesed by the positive. So that the t
test becomes 54,780. Next is the stage of finding the t table, where the t table is
searched based on the df value (degress of freedom).
From the output above, its known that the df is 25 and the value is 0,05.
The researcher used this value as a reference basic in calculating the t table in the
distribution of the t table statistics. Then find the t table 1,708. Thus, because t
test 54,780>1,708, then the selection of the basic for decision making above can
be rejected, that H0 is rejected an Ha is accepted. So ,This means that there is a
significant difference in student learning outcomes between those taught before
getting treatment and after getting treatment in class XI Mipa 1 SMAN 1
Tapalang.
3. Students Responses In Listening Through JOOX Application
In this part, the researcher explain about students responses in listening
through JOOX application by giving interview for every students. The result of
interview test as follows :
Easy73%
Difficult27%
Students responses in listening through joox application
34
About 26 students who attended interview and the students has answered
the interview of the researcher. All of the students said that they like JOOX
application while they are studying. The students said that JOOX application is
fun because this is the first time for the students study about listening and using
JOOX application, the JOOX application has made the students interested in
learning English and get a new way to learn English.
B. DISCUSSIONS
The section present the discussion based on the findings of the study. It is
concerned about the effectiveness of JOOX application in teaching English and
students response in listening through JOOX application.
1. The Effectiveness of Joox Application In Teaching English
According to Nurizmawati (2013), The use of the media in the teaching and
learning process provides the learners with inputs. However, mastery of the
content presented must be matched with the technologies used. The use of media
in teaching learning process can help teacher to create learning situation
effectively. Therefore, the media is important in the process of teaching and
learning. The media help teachers deliver the content they are teaching. It also
helps students to be able to readily understand the content.
Based on the research, there are significant between pre-test and post-test.
mean score of the students in pre-test is 60,42 and mean score of the students in
post-test is 85,58. So the researcher also comparing the t test and t table that the df
is 25 and the sig level is 0,05. Then find the t table is 1,708. Because t test is
35
54,780 > 1,708, so H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. So the researcher can
concluded JOOX application is effective in teaching English.
2. Students Responses In Listening Through JOOX Application
Based on the result of the interview that the researcher has done, about 26 of
the students said that is difficult in listening skill through JOOX application. The
students said that the students difficult to listening the pronunciation of the JOOX
application, the students also feel difficult in listening through JOOX application
because the students lack of the vocabulary, some students also said that is not
difficult in listening through English song by JOOX application. The students said
that JOOX application is fun and easy to understand what they hear.
Based on the result above, the researcher can conclude that there are two
factors that the students difficult in listening through JOOX application. The first,
the pronunciation of the singer from JOOX application. Second, lack of the
vocabulary of the students.
36
CHAPTER V
CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTION
This chapter consist of conclusion and suggestion of the research based on
the findings and discussion in previous chapter.
A. Conclusion
Based on the result and discussion in previous chapter, the researcher comes
to conclusion:
1. The effectiveness of joox application in teaching english. It has been proved
that shown the standard deviation and mean score of the students as an
experimental group is got better in post-test than in pre-test and test of
hypothesis t test > t table (54,780>1,708. It shown that the Ha is accepted and
Ho is rejected.
2. Using JOOX application in teaching listening makes students fun and more
interested even though the students find some difficulties in using JOOX
application.
3. The students need more learn about vocabulary to make the students rich of
vocabulary.
B. Suggestions
Here are some suggestion of the researcher after doing research :
1. The researcher needs LCD, the researcher is hard to find LCD in that school
because in that time LCD is not working. The researcher hopes that next
researcher can prepare the LCD in the future.
36
37
2. The researcher hopes that side of the school accepted what the writer has done
in that school. The researcher also hopes that the teacher can use JOOX
application in teaching listening because JOOX application effective in
listening skill.
