Ecuadorian Academic Network – CEDIAMilestones
• March 15, 2002 – first national meeting to discuss about the next generation of Internet and Internet2, 38 Institutions participated in this meeting.
• March 26, 2002 – second meeting with international participation from Internet2, CUDI and RNP.
September 18, 2002 – CEDIA was officially created by the President (e) of Ecuador - Eng. Pedro Pinto and the participation of 7 Universities, 2 Research Institutions and 2 Government Agencies.
October 2002 – Ecuador signed the MoU with UCAID – Internet 2, at the Internet2 member meeting in Los Angeles.
• January 10, 2003 – CEDIA’s Statute was signed and registered at the Education and Culture Ministry of Ecuador.

• June 2002 – Ecuador joins the CLARA – Phase A, Project• December 2003 – international meeting organized by OAS
in Quito, to discussed about Information Society and Advance Academic Networks and raise awareness about connectivity to advance academic networks and access to information
February 2004 – starts negotiations with Transelectric to get access to the national fiber optic infrastructure.
March 2004 – deployment of first version of CEDIA network started
• March 2004 – CEDIA signs the participation in CLARA – Phase B, Project.
September 2004 – call for providing connectivity to CEDIA members

Action results and opportunities
• As a result of the joint national tender, there was a 69% average reduction in prices.
• US$ 117.000 monthly for 17 Mbps (asymmetric) – down to US$ 32.000 for 34 Mbps (full duplex, fo)
• Increase 100% in capacity in every member, and standardize the minimum bandwidth.
• Use the remaining funds to cover 20% of CLARA project• Routers and switches are in place in each Institution
member of CEDIA, most of which were provided by the NSRC Center from the UO.
• Training• Advance networks, administration, security, operations and
applications. • Awareness for application development and identification
of groups of interest.• Inter institutional agreement with Transelectric for
accessing its fiber infrastructure

• Link the Ecuadorian scientific community for application development with the international scientific community.

• First version of CEDIA’s network was developed with the help of international partners, such as: UO-NSRC, NSF, ICA, IDRC-CRDI, CISCO, CISCO Press, O’Reilly.
• Second version will be developed with the help from Transelectric.
• Update the technology in the 3 main nodes of CEDIA’s network, and some Institutions.
• First – last mille will need to be resolved from each Member Institution to the Transelectric substations.
