ICES Journal of Marine Science

Journal du Conseil

The ICES Journal of Marine Science is the new name of the Journal du Conseil. Published for more than 65 years by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, it is now being published by Academic Press. Under its new name, but still under the auspices of the Council, it will continue to publish original papers within the broad field of marine and fisheries science, with particular reference to living resources and their environment. As a long-established journal of high repute, it will remain a primary source and standard reference for papers on fishery-orientated marine science as well as ecology, population studies, plankton research, marine mammals and invertebrates, and physical and chemical oceanography.

The Journal has traditionally drawn its contributions primarily from research work in the North Atlantic, the Council's area of competence, but relevant papers from all geographical areas and marine science disciplines are welcomed and encouraged. Many contributions stem from the documents submitted to the Council's annual Statutory Meeting; and particular issues feature sets of papers focusing on topics considered at theme sessions and mini-symposia held during the Statutory Meetings.

The ICES Journal o f Marine Science will be expanded from three to six issues per volume in the course of the next few years. Volume 48: 3 issues (1991), Volume 49: 4 issues (1992).

Developments in Fisheries Acoustics

"Developments in Fisheries Acoustics" is based on material orig inally presented at the International Symposium on Fisheries Acoustics held in Seattle, Washington, in 1987, subsequently revised and updated to reflect current work. The combined expertise of fisheries scientists, physicists, and engineers is seen in the significant progress made since 1982, when ICES and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization convened the preceding international fisheries acoustics symposium. This vo lume illustrates that progress and indicates the areas where future research w ill be concentrated.

Volume 189 in the series Rapports et Procès-Verbaux des Réunions contains 49 papers arranged according to the fo llow ing main headings: (1 ) Acoustic surveys of marine fish and other stock-assessment methods, (2) Status of fisheries acoustics theory and techniques, (3) Fish behaviour and the quality of acoustic data effects of sampling, vessels, and survey design, (4) Calibration of acoustic systems, (5) Applications of fisheries acoustics techniques in lakes and rivers, (6) Fish behaviour and physio logy w ith respect to target strength, (7) Target-strength m easurem ent- techniques and results, (8) Acoustic estimation of zooplankton abundance, (9) Species identification and the frequency dependence of target strength, and (10) Acoustic survey design and data analysis.

Techniques in Marine Environmental Sciences

This series presents detailed descriptions of methods and procedures relating to chemical and biological measurements in the marine environment.

Most of the techniques described have been selected for documentation on the basis of performance in ICES or other international intercalibration and intercomparison exercises. They have been reviewed and evaluated by ICES working groups and are considered to be among the best methods available. The topics covered range from general guidelines to specific techniques and equipment for obtaining, preserving, or analysing samples of sea water, sediments, or biota. The series is intended for use at the laboratory bench, in the field, or on research vessels.

The fo llow ing numbers have recently been published:

No. 7. Suspended particulate matter: Collection methods for gravimetric and trace metal analysis

No. 8. Soft bottom macrofauna: Collection and treatment of samples No. 9. Sediments and suspended particulate matter: Total and partial

methods of digestion. Video version available for DKK 130.00. No. 10. Organic halogens: Determination in marine media of adsorbable,

volatile, or extractable compound totals No. 11. Biological effects of contaminants: Oyster (Crassostrea gigas)

embryo bioassayNo. 12. Hydrocarbons: Review of methods of analysis in sea water, biota,

and sediments.
