The BBB’s 2017 AGM was held at Access Communications (Park St.) on September
8, 2017. Reports were submitted by the CEO, Board Chair, and each of the
Board’s Committees: Governance, Accreditation & Discipline, and Treasurer &
Auditor.
The Annual Report highlighted achievements and goals for each. The 2017 Annual
Report for 2016 operations will be made available online shortly.
Highlights include reporting that the 2015 deficit has been brought under control
in 2016; MWC Chartered Accountants were elected to be the external auditor for
the 2017 financial year; improvements have been made or are on-going to
operational and financial reporting; committees are examining policy changes for
the 2017 reporting year; efforts have been made and continue to evolve to
improve the public profile of the BBB brand and its Accredited Businesses.
This new event is replacing the former networking luncheon in Regina, formally
held at the Four Seasons Restaurant (Arcola Ave.).
The motivation was to bring a more entertaining format to the lunch meeting,
while providing attendees with greater value for their time. Efforts are being
made to schedule an expert speaker who can enlighten on topics of business
operations, strategic management, creative messaging, government , etc. Each
series is held on the second Wednesday of the month, meeting at the Classic
Buffet Company (100 Albert St.) in Regina. Registration for the October
session is now open at www.bbb.org/saskatchewan/events.
Watch for Streampage updates for November and December sessions dates and
speakers. If you would like to speak at a future Power Lunch, please contact
Kristin at [email protected] to submit your topic and why you
believe it would be of interest and value to other business attendees.

When It Comes to Privacy, What is the
Better Business Approach?
Thank you to our event
sponsors, participating
teams, and all Accredited
Businesses who donated
generously to the 2017
Swinging for Ethics Golf
Classic. This event is the
BBB’s annual fundraiser,
providing opportunities for
participating businesses to
show support of the
organization and its
educational programming in
the province. It also allows a
fun day out of the office to
network with other
businesses. September 15
proved to be a beautiful fall
day to have a golf event,
with golfers commenting
they enjoyed the day
immensely. Activities concluded with a delicious steak dinner prepared fresh off
the grill by Willows catering staff, and the presentation of awards to teams,
men’s and ladies closest to the pin and longest drive winners, and draws for
multiple prizes.
Thank you to our 2017 Sponsors:
Thank you to our prize donors:

Cybersecurity for your business is not only about adding layers of security
technology. It starts with understanding and managing your cybersecurity risks.
The 5 STEPS TO BETTER BUSINESS CYBERSECURITY, based on the National
Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework, represent
an approach that applies to the specifics of your business, helping you understand
how best to identify and protect your business’s vital data and technology assets,
and how to detect, respond to and recover from a cybersecurity incident.
IDENTIFY | Take inventory of key technologies you use and know
what information you need to rebuild your infrastructure from scratch.
Inventory the key data you use and store and keep track of likely threats.
PROTECT | Assess what protective measures you need to have in place
to be as prepared as possible for a cyber incident. Put protective policies in
place for technologies, data and users, and ensure that your contracts with
cloud and other technology service providers include the same protections.
DETECT | Put measures in place to alert you about current or imminent
threats to system integrity, or loss or compromise of data. Train your users
to identify and speedily report threats or incidents.
RESPOND | Make and practice an incidence response plan to contain
an attack or incident and maintain business operations in the short term.
RECOVER | Know what to do to return to normal business operations
after an incident. Protect sensitive data and your business reputation over
the long term.
5 Myths About Cybersecurity
Please consider taking the BBB Cybersecurity survey emailed to your business
via Streampage. We would like to know what security concerns are important to
you and what you do to mitigate your risk.
Notorious Chicago gangster, Al Capone, was convicted
of income tax evasion on October 17, 1931. He was
later sentenced to 11 years in federal prison, ending
his control of the Chicago underworld.
You may know that the man who identified Capone’s
fraudulent tax evasion scheme was accountant Frank
Wilson. But did you know he was BBB Accredited!?
Being an ethical businessperson isn’t always easy but it
is always worth it! Just ask Frank.

Power Lunch Regina | September 6, October 11
Throughout the days leading up to Halloween, stores and websites offering
costumes and decorations seem to pop up overnight. BBB is reminding consumers
of the importance in researching companies prior to making a holiday purchase.
Research the company and consider location. Halloween-themed stores take
advantage of short-term leases and may only be around for a few weeks. Look up
the business on bbb.org; ask employees how long the store will remain open;
inquire if they will accept returns. If anything gives you the creeps don’t buy.
Be aware of refund/return policies. Seasonal stores have the same
responsibilities as those who serve shoppers year round; they must display their
refund and return policies prominently. Read the fine print and be aware of the
terms and conditions of your purchase. It is the consumer's responsibility to be
aware of these policies.
Keep documentation. Make purchases by credit card, as this method of
payment provides the most protection if you must dispute a problem with the
card's issuer. Save all receipts and/or email confirmations, which is usually where
a company's refund and exchange policy can be found. It is always better to have
policies in writing and proof of purchase is often needed to make a return.
Check a website's security settings. When buying online, do it securely. The
web address should begin with "https://" and be sure to read the website's
privacy policy and terms and conditions.

Scam Alert | Phishing Email Scam Uses BBB Logo
On September 11, BBB offices across North America were inundated with phone
calls by concerned businesses and consumers who had received an email claiming
they were involved in a BBB complaint concerning a labour standards or health
standards violation.
The scammers used BBB logos and legitimate office addresses and numbers to
trick recipients into clicking the links, which posed a risk of infecting the computer
with malware that could steal passwords and other private information.
BBB does not handle any complaint related to employment or health standards,
and any email claiming to be from the BBB with this kind of message should be
regarded with suspicion. If you receive a message like this, forward it to the
Council of Better Business Bureau at [email protected] and report it on
ScamTracker. If you receive a complaint notice from a BBB office, feel free to call
to ensure its legitimacy.
Survey | Value of Accreditation
September 19 will be the launch of the 2017 Value of Accreditation (VOA) survey
conducted for BBB of Saskatchewan and the Council of Better Business bureaus.
Some Accredited Businesses may recall a similar survey conducted last year. The
2016 VOA Survey helped BBB of Saskatchewan establish a benchmark for our
territory. The survey provided insight into why businesses become accredited,
what they perceive to be of greatest importance to their customers, and what BBB
activities and events they are interested in. Your feedback is greatly appreciated,
and will be accepted until September 30.
