Th ey come in diff erent forms: the backside of switchback hills, the home stretch of the track, or sometimes even that mile half way into the race where no one is around to cheer. As we cross the stage today in a victory lap celebrating our achievements of the last four years, it’s strangely

We are more our academic achievementscomforting to refl ect on where we started.

We began the fi rst leg of our college years as excited and anxious freshman, thrust into the next step of our lives and so thrilled to have our independence. Sometimes we were embarrassingly enthusiastic and optimistic. I remember I was one of those numerous fi rst years that wore their nametags around the fi rst week of school until I realized that we didn’t need to and that no one else in college did. Freshman year was a period of novelty and insatiable curiosity.

I was so determined to ace my exams and earn academic honors. As a result of sheer luck, I was assigned to have President Chris Kimball as my faculty advisor. I met with him on occasion and was

probably overfl owing with an uncontrollable eagerness to succeed academically. Now that I look back, I realize that although our time spent at Cal Lutheran was centered on the education we received in the classroom, it was also a part of something much greater. We have been challenged, encouraged and given unquantifi able opportunities to learn about ourselves. Th e community service we performed, athletic games we won, and the moments spent laughing at the cafeteria with our roommates are those memories we will cherish and remember. We have been shaped by these experiences and made lasting relationships.

Now as we look forward to the next chapter of our lives, we begin that part of the run that is

diffi cult, scary and unbelievably worthwhile. We have worked so long for this bittersweet moment.

Commencement means leaving the comforts of undergrad behind and saying a temporary goodbye to all those we have befriended. But, it also means we get to move onto new places, exciting challenges and the chance to make more friends.

I am so thrilled to begin a new chapter in my life and have learning experiences far from the classroom. Th e future is both scary and exciting, and not knowing what is next makes this the best adventure of all. I encourage you to discover what makes you happy and never let it go. I wish you the best on wherever your path to success may take you.

Sandlin refl ects on the potential of social mediaPROFESSOR OF THE YEAR:

It’s an honor to be recognized by the senior class. I have something in common with each of you — I earned my bachelor’s degree from CLU as an undergraduate, too (the exact year is not important, just know it was long before Facebook–thank goodness!). Although the campus has changed in appearance with greatly improved facilities, much has remained the same. Faculty members who cared about good teaching mentored me. Class sizes were small, so I couldn’t disappear into a crowd. Professors encouraged me to form my own opinions and defend them. CLU gave me the opportunity to expand on my in-class learning through creative projects, internships and leadership roles. I was encouraged to consider the world beyond myself, and

ponder how I could contribute to its betterment. The learning environment I experienced at CLU — one that encouraged critical thinking and valued experiential learning–served me well during my 20-year career in the PR and advertising industry.

Five years ago, I was invited to return to CLU–this time as teacher instead of learner. It turns out, however, that I’m still a learner. I’ve learned so much from CLU students, and feel

privileged to accompany you on a small part of your life’s journey. We are fortunate to be on this journey in the midst of one of the most important and exciting cultural shifts in history–social media. Revolutionary and ubiquitous, social media has presented us with new and exciting questions to consider. How will it impact how we learn, have relationships, make purchasing decisions, govern, and create? How will it impact decision-making, policy-making and the making of a more sustainable future? Your generation’s response to this cultural shift will direct our future. Your questions will guide our next steps. I hope the learning environment at CLU has sparked a life-long curiosity in you, as it did in me, and that you continue to ask the important questions.

SENIOR OF THE YEAR:

Berg weighs in on her college experienceDear Fellow Graduates,

I have been given the honor to write to you on the day of our commencement. Today is a momentous day, which marks the culmination of four years of hard work. Throughout our time here we have written countless papers, completed numerous projects, and studied for many exams. We have worked hard academically, but even more we have learned and grown personally.

During our time at CLU, we have had many opportunities and influential experiences and have met many incredible people. M¬ost of us started CLU with painting the rocks and cleaning the riverbed. We shared homecomings, Christmas Chaos, spring formals, and senior celebrations. These common and varied experiences have helped shape us into the people we are today. Our daily interactions, studies, and events have enhanced our relationships with people and our understanding of ourselves. We have had professors who have cared about us not only academically, but personally as well. In our classes we were challenged to think critically, approach problems in new and creative ways, and

have accumulated a depth of knowledge that has widened our understanding of the world and how we can contribute to it.

Our studies and experiences at CLU have prepared us to go out into the world, ready to take on whatever challenges life brings us; knowing that we have been adequately prepared during our time here. So openly welcome the challenges that we are sure to face, because through adversity comes much growth and a deeper understanding of our purpose and calling.

In sitting down to write this letter to you my thoughts were many. I wanted to share something insightful and scholarly. I hoped to connect with each and every one of you in a special and meaningful way. We are 588 special and unique people that today are one as California Lutheran University’s class of 2012. My prayer is that you will all be blessed with lives filled with joy, laughter, friends and family.

With CLU Pride,

Amanda Berg

P.S. I would like to leave you with 10 memories of CLU that you can take with you on your journey.

Amanda’s Top 10 Memories of CLU

2. Walking past Enormous Luther, lovingly nicknamed “Gumby”, on the way to study in the library

3. Singing at the top of our lungs at the Club Lu Howl at the Moon

4. Enjoying each of the breath-taking sunsets over Mt. Clef Ridge

5. Dancing the night away with friends at Spring Formal at Disneyland

6. Watching the development and construction of Trinity, Swenson, and William Rolland Stadium

7. Laughing until we cry every other Thursday night at Improv in the crowded Forum

8. Cheering on our Kingsmen and Regals as they represent our university in their athletic endeavors

9. President Kimball, the pastors, and various staff serving Late Night breakfast in the Caf every Monday of finals week

Jessica Shipp

Dearest Jessica,

To say we are merely just proud of you is a huge understatement. Your graduation proves all of your hard work and determination. May God continue to bless you and your abilities. It’s something we’ve all known about you...you’re pretty darn smart. Like they say, “education is what survives when what has been learned has been forgotten.” Th e perseverance you’ve shown and the “stick-to-it attitude” will serve you for the rest of your life. Although you’re graduating, your whole life is an education that has only just begun. So always be a student and keep learn-ing Jessica, for knowledge is the special key to winning what you want in life and being who you want to be. Congratulations!

With much love,

Mom and Dale
